Event: WCG'07

The WCG Europe recently announced the first five games, that will be used in the 2007 event. The 2007 Grand Final, will be held in

Seattle.

The titles are:

PC:
Counter-Strike 1.6 (5on5)
FIFA 2007 (1on1)
WarCraft III The Frozen Throne (1on1)
StarCraft:Broodwar (1on1)

XBOX 360:
Gears of War (4on4)

According to their page, there is still room for other games to be added and the list is not yet definite.

The average amount of users online in WC3 in Europe at any given moment is around 50,000. Not saying the numbers are bigger than China, but it certainly are a lot of people when compared to other competitive games.

Now, GOW, sucks massively for competitive purposes. Yes, it looks awesome, but thats it. Comparing this console JOKE to a game like Quake, its a sign of a totally lack of understanding about REAL competitive gaming. The pathetic skill you need to play a game like GOW its so little that hardly can be considered a skill. Again, if you are taking seriously ANY console game for competitive purposes makes the whole discussion pointless.

What fact are you talking about? A console game can easily match or surpass the pace of any PC game by having the same characteristics and traits or even having those that equate to a faster-paced game. Halo 2 4v4 is just as fast-paced as Quake 3 4v4, CS 5v5, or BF2 8v8 -- perhaps not in every aspect, but rather the ones that matter. Hence, your so-called fact is really just a biased opinion.

And I don't care about what you think of GoW. Personally, I think it's pretty fun, and that's all that matters to me personally, but I just wanted to point out how ignorant your statement was about console games in general.

I see eight players in the level and about as much action going on at once in both games, so I have every reason to make that conclusion. Games do not have to be fast paced like Quake to be successful. Warcraft 3? Counter-Strike? Halo 2? Starcraft? Easily the 4 most popular games in e-sports, hands down. Are they fast? No! If you are on this by some time now, you should know already that those games have more larger user amounts because they are more mainstream'ish, not because they are AWESOME games. I mean, you can get on CS and get some kills, thats fun for newbs, you can get on a noob only server to SC or WC3 and play some BALANCED matches, and well BF2 and JOKE2 are install and play games. (Don't get me wrong about SC and WC3, they are awesome at what they do, RTS.) I'll prefeer some SC before WC3 anyway.

On the other hand you have Quake, where you got crushed if you are new by everyone, badly, then the noob leaves to not come back. This happens because the game is simply don't getting the support it deserves to get new people on it. If Quake where the most played game, we wouldn't having that discussion at all.

I asked the same and the response was: Because weapon prize money changes every "x" time and "the game is crap as a whole compared to 1.6".

Its like Q3 vs Q4 debate. Where on CS the comunity fighted to keep the better game (1.6), Quake community seems so stupid to coordinate himself, in order to do something useful with the purpose of getting Q3 to the rest of tournaments (the rest of sellouts that switched to Q4, specially ESWC).

Yes, we are less than the CS 1.6 community, but we aren't even trying to do something about this pathetic situation.

The gameplay is completely different. Slower, less reactive, less accurate, you feel "heavier", the radar is stupid, the models and hitboxes are too big... the list goes on. It's like playing normal football then football on sand. Source is simply terrible compared to 1.6.

What I was trying to tell is that WCG doesn't decide SC:BW's succes.

It's the game itsself and it's community.

I think people in general should watch out saying that a game's popularity depends (heavily) on the quantity and quality (in broad form) of tournaments for the game.

What to me is an undeniable fact is that games like CS and SC:BW (still) are very present in gaming because of how well and how many people like it, not because of the tournaments. Of course tournaments can stimulate, but if there are other factors that way more heavily, it still doesn't do much. Look at PK and the CPL WT.
(saying the community doubled is not really a good argument in this case ;p)

i'd say the cpl world tour had more cash? im not sure though :). still qcon is limited to a game series part from other events that has a few other games aswell...

personally i grade ESWC/CPL/WCG higher than QCON but the latter has more fun games for me to watch :)

Tournament to tournament comparison wise for Q3 Quakecon has giving the same amount as others if not more. Winning first place for 20k? Quakecon is just once a year though. Otherwise it's just as big.

The WT was huge but that's not what they give away every year. CPL
should do CTF, it has a bigger fan base and more players play it!!!! Not to mention the skill is also very high. Plus it has HOLY SHITS!!!

1v1 has +back rail.

I bought an original SC:BW cd today...it still beats all the other games in the gender...

UT3 will have a huge fan base on it's release, and probably the Corporations want to see it run on they fast machines ( DX10 and crap like that ). Q4 ( lol @ q3 ) can be only picked if UT3 will suck as bad as did the shoutcasting on the worldcybergames 2002 finals between Gitzz and Evenflow.

why have they chosen 3v3 instead of 4v4? and what mode will it be? i presume normal tdm.

funny how you all dis GoW simply for it being a console game, and how many of you have actually played it properly online?
also, theyve been doing fifa for years so they obviously have some reason too, wether its interest from participants or from spectators.

face it q4 sucks, also it doesnt draw the spectators in like the consoles games do. and no the 1000 (and thats probably maximum globally, online and off) or so that would actually watch q4 is nothing compared to the amount of people watching console games.

when wcg started competitive gaming was in its infancy, with q3 being one of the major games of the 'sport' but even with it being a major game it still had pretty small numbers of people intersted in following it which has been the case for dm games from the start. now some years on competitive gaming has grown a bit and larger audiences are now taken into consideration, so more conolse games now get picked due too a much larger potential spectator and player base.

deathmatch games a basically a niche market.

Props to the q3 ppl who are keeping it real by still competing in the tourneys like GGL. Yes, people still love this game, and team competition in q3 never saw any real action, other than the massive DM tourney at Frag 4 or the CTF tourney at one of the Quakecons. Yeah they usually have side tourneys at Quakecon in the BYOB, but with rinky-dink prizes. Any team event in q3 is hella more fun to watch than CS.
