xbm is making a mod that has optional functionality with competition in mind. u can choose which way u want the timer in xbm...its all so that people can play in an environment tailored to their preferences, and meanwhile Q4 gameplay remains identicle. i dont see what could possibily be wrong with that?

The idea of making the community choose between several settings to optimise their personal preference is really ok, amazing to say the least. But the timer thingie is just confusing, when playing a tdm match you would be obliged to force everyone (as in teamm8s) to use the same layout otherwise it would ensure pure mayhem. And since the default float is to use the timer downwards, I guess its best to leave it that way.

NB: A merging would erase loads of difficulties we are facing now, apart from the timerthingie tho.

yeah, the fps issue needs to be addressed. I've never used xbm for 1v1but i know the fps in tdm isn't exactly great.

I`ve not had any FPS problems in xbm whatsoever.

but I know that the performance is being looked into again for next release. that`s what I was told.

let me intervene here by saying that I had no problems with fps, and the latest release IS indeed damn smooth for me.

All I sometimes do is post my view on certain comments as reply and if I have any additional information like "they are working on it" or "oh, what you report is a new yet unknown problem" then I just say that, simply because I know what`s going on there internally (see my post below).

But the reason for the bias is my belief in the quality of the mod, not any kind of friend politics. I have no problems at all with for example AnthonyJ of Q4MAX either.

I kind of defend my decision of last season to let CB TDM/CTF stick to XBM indeed.

So, no I will not stop talking in favour of XBM, simply because my personal belief is that it`s the better mod. I am free to voice my opinion I guess? If Q4MAX would be the better mod in my opinion, I would voice my thoughts in their favour.

I don`t know what the problem with that should be. A lot of my comments or remarks regarding XBM come from the insight I have, because I have access to their internal feature and bugforum so I kind of know what`s going on, what`s being worked on and what`s gonna be fixed soon. So I think what I do is mainly not "cheering" for XBM, but rather "reporting" about facts regarding what`s gonna happen with XBM.

q4max did have fps issues in the last few releases but it was fixed in 0.74a/b and it's smooth as now.

xbm is still way smoother on my pc

mine as well. it feels like a different game altogether to me in comparison to q4max, which feels like i'm getting 30fps all the time, and my fps is maxed. =|

Must be some interesting problem then since different machines seem to run different mods better, perhaps something for the developers to look into, if there's anything to look into that is.

q4max feels way smoother on my machine but both mods show a relatively constant maxed fps and it's hardly unplayable on xbm either which I seem to be playing most anyway.

to my knowledge, clanbase is owned by ggl, so i wouldn't be surprised to see CB make an announcement quite soon....

However ,pretty much everybody i know who plays 1v1 was fine with q4max. It might not matter all that much if you have a killer machine but for me it certainly does.
Take q4max and xbattle ,set graphicsettings to low ,r_mode 3 ,enable vertex/ambient-light. Q4max will feel enjoyably smooth ,xbm won't. That's not really acceptable for me. While it sucked having to change mods for tdm/1v1 it will certainly suck a whole lot more if you have to play the same mode with different mods.

:( the xbm team is very skilled indeed and i must admit that xbm does feel a lot smoother than q4max for me but i'm not a fan of some of the decisions they made like the counting up timer and the tankjr sounds they had put in earlier.

i'm not sure how many in that 80% really think its worse or if they're just saying it because they want what they're used to. i liked the q4 counting down timer because it was a different from q3's (something new to get accustomed to) but personally, i think the cpma way of having to time by feeling rather than by looking at a timer is the way to go.

Didn't affect me at all and the people I play with has no problems with it.
It does cause problems in teamgames though, messes up everything when some tard figures he'll use a diffrent timer T.t

So how can he say this?!

To be honest I don't see Q4Max being THAT much better than XBM, or XBM being THAT much greater than Q4Max, they are both great competition mods. However, this powerstruggle is continually splitting an already unstable game nearly a year after its release and that is unacceptable if Q4 is to continue to have any sort of shot of additional minor success competition wise. It is unfortunate that Q4 is so unfriendly to newbies to just get the damned game working for online play, not to mention the skill gaps...this just adds to it all :(

I hope the majority of leagues/ladders/events are using one mod.. whatever mod ends up being the most stable and offers the features that most approve of....but in the mean time.. All of the 'talk' about splitting is actually hurting the community more. The mods have nothing to do with any sort of 'split'. If you are a solid player and compete at a high l level.. well then it should not be a problem to play on either mod.. as they both are very similar in most cases.

The wrong choice, if you ask me. Like it's already been stated, both mods are very similar right now. Q4Max is being accepted and played by almost all duelers, though. And the duelers are the majority in this community. No bashing for TDM intended, but it's so minor in Q4...

I can picture comming back to this site in 6 months time with the last 17 'pr0' players of the quake 4 community still arguing over what mod should be used for there tournament. That would be devastating news indeed.

Alien loves Freeze Tag. He been running freeze tag tourneys for a few years. He also been viewing/following a few mods that are suppose to have Freeze Tag such as Q4 Arena, Q4Max and XBM.

Guess what, XBM SHOULD have Freeze Tag on the next update. So I doubt "GGL CHOOSES XBM" has anything todo with one mod being better than the other but most likely influenced by inclusion of Freeze Tag.

BTW, According to Bandit GTR has plans for FT.

Yesterday when I joined q4max, I was pretty surprised to see xbm being accused of copying cpma's freezetag, alien of being completely biased (well, I agree, sort of. I love everyone who promises FT), complaining about how the gui preview was just a couple of screenshots and how they dont set standards (2 versions of FT).

Guys.. dont make this a huge issue.. Its just as mahmood explained in his article... it should be about the best mod at the time. I think we can agree that at this point.. q4max is a bit behind... it does not mean that they will not shoot the moon and once again be the mod of choice. As mahmood put, very well I might add, decisions like this should not be about 'back room deals' ... and I can assure you this was not about that. I will admit, as arQon says, that any involvement that I have had with admins from the xbm team.. is about getting features or settings that the league wishes to see... but remember alot of that comes from what the community would like to see first. arQon and I have even talked about things that I would personally like to see in q4max.. as well as things that community players were pm'ing me about. None of those features or settings should be the sole reason why an organization chooses a mod/settings. With that said.. it can also be pointed out that in the begining many organizations chose q4max for exactly those reasons.. and even more disturbing.. they chose q4max simply because arQon was the coder. This shit happens guys.. its part of how competition fuels success.

I will say.. that I was all about q4max.. and still consider the mod to be solid. Recently though.. and way before I ever spoke with anyone from the xbm team... I decided to give the newer releases of xbm a fair shake, and I started to really test them just before AC2. What I found was that for teamplay gametypes.. it seemed as if xbm was a slightly better choice and that for 1v1.. q4max was quite a bit better. Even more recently with both mods updating.... I spent a bit more time with the xbm team. By doing this.. I actually spent more time tweaking my config, figuring out the different settings and commands.. and really took a good look at the 'feel' of the game. What I found offered a bit more then q4max. Yes, this is a personal choice.. but as a league admin.. I also contacted several community pro players.. and I looked at what xbm offered. There were still some things missing.. and thus my involvement with xbm included some suggestions.. if those suggestions are not met.. then the GGL will decide at that point which mod offers the best at the time.

This is how it works. Its nothing personal.. its nothing 'back room'.. its part of competition and its part of helping the community organizations and the community players.. get the best out or Q4.

This modwar in Quake 4 has really become something...everyone refuses to see that the other mod is better this version and worse in the next. It's like once you become a fanboy, you won't be allowed to think for yourself. I've switched camps so many times I can't even remember anymore, and every time I make a negative or positive comment on either of the mods, I get flamed and called a fanboy. Amazing. :D

As for the 2 verisons of FT to come in any mod.. (currently xbm).. you have to remember that the euros play a different style and have for some time. Also.. the final installment of CPMA FT was based off of conversatons between arQon and me and my involvement with getting him settings. The FT community has a q3 mod specifically for FT.. but OSP and CPMA both offered different versions.. but without many of the bells and whistles that UFT (mod name) offered. So I went to arQon..who was very receptive and has always been very cool with me.. and he offered to adopt many of the features and especially the settings that were more popular among the lot that play FT in the states.

Offering 2 versions (USA and EURO) is a perfect example of my dedication to the 'community'. I can not justify just setting up the future of FT to be one style only..when for years there has always been 2. I have. however, made strong suggestions that the CB organization adopt the USA style of play.. as I feel its a slightly more competitive style... but thats not my decision to make at this point. ITS THE COMMUNITIES :P

Hopefully they just got the EURO settings right for us euro players...they should have asked some euro people to beta test it aswell (freezers that is) :(
