Carmack's QL-esque ideas from way back. (41 comments)
Posted by stafu @ 04:32 CST, 7 March 2011 - iMsg
Thought some of you may find this interesting. I was reading a review of the Quake 1 engine source, and came across a .plan from John Carmack from August, 1996. Of particular note, I found this very interesting (he was talking about QuakeWorld):

There will be a single master server running here at id. Whenever anyone
starts up a server, it will register itself with the master server, and
whenever a client wants to start a game, it will inquire with the master
to find out which servers are available.

Users will have a persistant account, and all frags on the entire internet
will be logged. I want us to be able to give a global ranking order of
everyone playing the game. You should be able to say, "I am one of the
ten best QuakeWorld players in existance", and have the record to back it
up. There are all sorts of other cool stats that we could mine out of
the data: greatest frags/minute, longest uninterrupted quake game,
cruelest to newbies, etc, etc.

For the time being, this is just my pet research project. The new exes
will only work with registered Quake, so I can justify it as a registration
incentive (don't pirate!).

If it looks feasable, I would like to see internet focused gaming become
a justifiable biz direction for us. Its definately cool, but it is
uncertain if people can actually make money at it. My halfway thought
out proposal for a biz plan is that we let anyone play the game as an
anonymous newbie to see if they like it, but to get their name registered
and get on the ranking list, they need to pay $10 or so. Newbies would
be automatically kicked from servers if a paying customer wants to get on.
Sound reasonable?

Apologies if this has been posted before.

Don't update Kinzu drivers/firmware! (19 comments)
Posted by stafu @ 10:30 CST, 10 March 2010 - iMsg
I got a Kinzu when they were first released to try it out and have been using it since then up until now. It had a bit of mouse correction/prediction but it wasn't too much, certainly not any worse than a G1 so I kept using it, as I liked the shape and texture etc. and had no issues with the tracking.

Anyway a couple days ago I updated the drivers (1.0.1.10 -- I was using 1.0.1.08 before I believe), and it has totally fucked up the mouse correction. I've tried uninstalling the newer drivers and just installing the old ones but it persists.

See picture for what I'm talking about.

Anyway for anyone using one, don't update firmware/drivers! After using smaller mice for a while my 3.0 feels too big; time to get a 1.1.

How to play back QL demos

From GData #14

Note: The dm13 game in this zip is the first one they played; unfortunately I'm missing the 2nd (replayed because both dropped at the same time, with about 1 minute left). I'm also afk for the first ~30 seconds of that map. Sorry about that, hopefully there will be a VOD or pov-recorded demos soon?

How to play back SC demos

* Scroll down for the link to the actual VOD.

I know Starcraft VODs aren't often posted here, but after Paladia posted a VOD recently I though it was a pretty cool idea, and this VOD is definitely worth sharing. To really enjoy this VOD, a little bit of background knowledge of SC is needed. In short, what you need to know is:

1. YellOw (this is the real YellOw by the way, not Yarnc) was one of the top zerg progamers mostly between 2001-2003 (apart from a bronze in a 2006 OSL). He was considered BoxeR's #1 rival. He joined the air force in late 2008 and currently plays for Air Force ACE. In April this year an article came out on a popular Korean Starcraft website about how YellOw had been breathing life back into ACE with his intense practice and determination (read here).

YellOw hasn't won a KeSPA officiated match in 735 days.

2. Bisu is widely considered the current #1 Protoss progamer, and in the top 3 of current players. By statistics, PvZ is his best matchup (~66% career win rate).

3. The map these two played on tonight has ~ 35% win rate for Zerg vs Protoss (Heartbreak Ridge).

This match took place during SKT T1 vs. ACE in Proleague. T1 is 2nd (I think?) in the league at the moment. ACE is at the bottom.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I hope it helps some people appreciate this a little more.

And here is the VOD. Enjoy!

Q3 Accel & TF2 Accel (No comments)
Posted by stafu @ 06:29 CDT, 8 July 2008 - iMsg
Hey guys.

I've recently started playing with .1 accel in Q3 and I'm trying to get the same feel in TF2, which is no doubt going to be tricky :X but does anyone know much about the differences between Q3 mouse accel settings and the m_customaccel/customaccel_scale/exponent etc. settings in TF2 (and I assume Source)?

I've played around the the customaccel settings a bit but it seems it's much more full on compared to the Q3 accel.

Cheers.
