compLexity Gaming's Silver Retires (7 comments)
Posted by detonatR @ 00:14 CDT, 15 October 2010 - iMsg
In a surprising turn of events, compLexity Gaming’s StarCraft 2 player, Strieb “Silver” Roman has announced that he will be retiring from professional gaming. This comes after Silver was picked up by the compLexity organization barely two months ago after an impressive performance in the National ESL StarCraft 2 Cups, beating players like HuK, Qxc, and IdrA to qualify for the Intel Extreme Masters American Championships.
“In the last 6 months I have been absorbed in the competitive world of Starcraft and it has been fun,” explained Silver. “However, there comes a time when the narrow scope of a video game is not enough to sustain a man’s love of life. I have my convocation for business school at the end of this month. As much as I have enjoyed being a part of the esports community for this brief time, I now need to move on to making some of my other dreams become reality, in addition to taking care of some of my more serious responsibilities.”

Posted by detonatR @ 22:04 CDT, 10 August 2010 - iMsg
Loaded, LLC -- Loaded, North America's renowned professional gaming organization, is proud to announce that today it will be picking up a Capture The Flag (CTF) team for the popular first-person shooter, Quake Live. The team, formerly known as DaFoneMen (DFM), consists of several talented and experienced players who will be representing Loaded at the upcoming QuakeCon 2010 event in Dallas, Texas.

Leading the team will be veteran Quake player, Kevin "KGB" Holowchik. Holowchik was a deciding factor in his former team, Who Run It, finishing an impressive second place in last year's QuakeCon tournament. Joining him will be Jeff "Flysher" Heakes, Justin "sparks" Sparks, and current Loaded player Gaven "whaz" Sorensen. The team has managed much success so far, quickly becoming one of the top teams in North American Quake Live CTF.

"I am excited to have this group representing us at the upcoming QuakeCon tournament," said Shashi "DetonatoR" Singh, Team Manager. "The team has just the right mixture of experience, talent, and hunger to be a challenge to any and every team in attendance. They've already proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with in their results so far and I am confident they will showcase this in Texas."

"First and foremost, we would like to express our gratitude to team Loaded for their support," said Jeff "Flysher" Heakes. "We are very happy to represent Loaded who have quickly established themselves as one of the top professional gaming organizations in North America."

"As a newly formed team ourselves, we are especially excited to play at QuakeCon this year," explained Heakes. "In our first event playing together, we participated in the one-thousand dollar QUAD Gaming tournament and defeated the top two contenders in the North American scene to take the tournament. While it was a great start, we made sure not to let anything get into our heads as there is no place for egos on our squad. We have since grown much stronger as a team and believe to be serious contenders for this year’s CTF tournament."

About Loaded LLC:

Get DETONATED: Silver (No comments)
Posted by detonatR @ 23:33 CDT, 4 August 2010 - iMsg
The second addition to the Get DETONATED series reveals some interesting details about an unknown Canadian Starcraft 2 player: Silver who has been making the headlines lately.

In the next installment of our interview series GET DETONATED, we talk to Strieb "Silver" Roman. Roman has been playing in a few National ESL cups so far, and has been turning heads each time he plays. Read on to find out who this up and coming StarCraft 2 star is!

DetonatoR: In the recent National ESL cup you played in, you managed to beat a strong player in Idra, another talented player qxc, and then HuK in the finals. What went through your mind after you won?

Silver: I was very excited! Although, shortly afterward I calmed myself because I find that embracing the mania that follows winning can lead to an unfocused mind and entitlement mentality, which is detrimental to continuous improvement. As for what I did, I went to my friend's house to relax. We had a beer and then did some freestyles. He is a very talented artist called Keenan Kain, make sure you look him up in the near future!

Get DETONATED is a new series in which the ESL National ESL will be interviewing some of the top players in their respective games on some of the recent happenings in the scene.

After announcing its expansion into North America, Shashi "DetonatoR" Singh was able to sit down with professional Quake Live dueler United States of America Chance Lacina from Evil Geniuses to find out what his thoughts are on the announcement and other issues in the Quake scene.
DetonatoR: The ESL just announced recently its expansion into America with the National ESL. What did you think about this when you first learned of it?

Chance:
I'm thrilled about it. I've been developing my game and I cannot wait to compete. Of course thats my standard mental state, but when announcements like this happen I get especially excited at the chance to test my skills in a tournament setting :D (Especially from ESL!)

Since they launched, they've proved themselves to me as the best Quake League I've ever had the pleasure of competing in. The fact that the first qualifier is in Iowa is an added bonus. By sheer coincidence, I planned to move in with my cousin to Ottumwa this summer, then I heard about the Big Bang 2010 and the potential for a QuakeLive tournament in the very same town.

Should be pretty awesome. I'll have clamp, destrukt, and dahang staying with me during the event :) Sabian is gonna fly in early and practice with me for a few weeks prior, then Quakecon is right after the Big Bang.

Methos Quake Official Good Bye (30 comments)

No More Updates... Ray "Methos" Walsh wrote:

It has been over 7 years since my last update. Obviously, there won't be any more. I always meant to post the occasional update but never found the time or the desire. As with most things in life, our priorities change as life goes on, and so do we.

The pages of Methos Quake contain some moments and demos from the gaming world that we can all share. I'm pretty sure that my memory of all the bad times and stressful moments has faded enough for me to think that it was so much fun for all those years, and for the most part, it was. There are incredible moments that I will never forget and they will always bring a smile to my face.

There were so many amazing people from everywhere involved in Quake. When it started, it was only some local friends, then it was people in the same city attending lan parties, then larger lans, then high speed internet connections that brought people together from further and further away. Then tournaments that brought in the best players from all over the world, sometimes for big prizes, sometimes for nothing more than bragging rights.

MLG CEO Interviewed by TechCrunch (30 comments)
Posted by detonatR @ 02:22 CST, 12 November 2009 - iMsg
This past weekend, thousands of gamers descended upon the Anaheim Convention Center to spectate and compete in one of the biggest video game competitions of the year, put on by Major League Gaming. Over two hundred teams of four individuals competed for the Halo 3 Championship where prize money totaled almost $60,000; while an additional $60,000 was up for grabs for titles such as Gears of War 2, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and EA Sports Madden NFL. An estimated 700,000 people viewed the live stream over the course of the weekend.

In this interview, Matt spoke about many of the misconceptions of the gaming business, including companies continued persistence of trying to bring video gaming to broadcast television; instead of focusing almost entirely on internet streaming.

CPL Founder Angel Munoz Interviewed (38 comments)
Posted by detonatR @ 17:58 CDT, 28 October 2009 - iMsg
In his first written interview in over two years, CPL Founder Angel Munoz sits down to discuss his past, present, and future in the gaming world.

Angel Munoz is a man that needs little introduction. He founded one of the biggest eSport event circuits (CPL), which lasted for a little over a decade before shutting down and bought by outside investors in 2008. For his work in eSports, Angel Munoz has often been considered the "father of eSports", but he is not without his controversy.

As everyone knows, you sold the CPL to an investment group from the United Arab Emirates in 2008, are you still involved with CPL operations or perhaps consulting? Is it still the same people running the CPL but under new ownership or has that changed?

Angel Munoz: The original plan was for me to be on the Board of Directors and for my company (NewWorld.com) to retain a 10% interest in the new CPL, but that did not work out. So now that CPL has moved its main operations to Asia, I will no longer retain my board chair or have any interest in the CPL. The new CPL has excellent management, advisors and partners, and honestly no longer need me to agree or disagree with their plans.

Team EG's Chance Releases Quake Bible (151 comments)
Posted by detonatR @ 19:09 CDT, 6 September 2009 - iMsg
Taking a break from dueling, Team EG's Chance Lacina took a stab at writing his very own guide to Quake Live, for both beginners and hardcore gamers alike. His guide, a four part Quake Bible, takes a more philosophical approach at dueling in hopes of guiding readers to make the right decisions both in-game and out.
This article is structured around insight. Insights are the foundation for your improvement; the building blocks of your game. They enable you to make the right choices at the right times. Without them, you can't build a structure strong enough to carry you into the next level. Remember that in every step forward there is an often hidden insight holding it in place that you must find in order to further establish it as your strength. Meaning, if you're playing great - there's a reason why. You have to find that reason to retain that level of play. If you're playing miserably, there's a reason why. You have find that reason and stamp it out.

The following sections primarily contain insights to help you improve your game on your own, this is the most important thing you can learn. You won't always have someone to tell you how to play. Irregardless I cover a few key subjects that should be your primary focus every time you play. Those two subjects are enemy status and timing. We'll get to them a little later. For now, we need to understand some principles to keep your head together.

Part 1: Intro and Discipline
Part 2: Presence and Enemy Awareness
Part 3: Resource Timing and Aim
Part 4: Motivation, Resolve, and Conclusion
