Quake III DeFRaG run on a fantasy puzzle map. This is a very interesting single player experience. There are two random puzzles that are different on each run, so you have to learn the patterns and act quickly in order to solve them as fast as possible. Special thanks to SOCK for designing this fantastic map.

Greetings to the whole Quake community.

What is the best Win 7 NVIDIA driver (3 comments)
Posted by welkom @ 04:40 CST, 27 February 2021 - iMsg
Small story short.

I have a stripped WIN 7 with ulta low latencxy with the latest stripped NVIDIA drivers. I have threaded optimization off in the NVIDIA ctrl Panel.

I have a i7-9700k With a GTX 1080. With the latest stripped NVIDIA drivers. I have threaded optimization off in the NVIDIA ctrl Panel.

What seems to help is cap my framerate at 138 with Rivatuner ( my monitor is 144hz)( ingame cap com_maxfps 138 dont do the trick) but that sucks cause it gives inputlag!
r_primitives 2 does not help,
com_idlesleep 0 does not help
I deleted both qzconfig.cfg and repconfig.cfg and disabled steam cloud and tried again with a new config; same problem.

I think it has to do with the NVIDA drivers cause my win 7 is stripped down naked with no windows update etc.

No heres finally question:

What is the most stable NVIDIA driver for windows 7 to play Quake Live on. the populair 441.41?

QL on WIN 7 when new player joins i get lag. (1 comment)
Posted by welkom @ 19:57 CST, 26 February 2021 - iMsg
I just finished FReethys Windows 7 guide to get the lowest input possible on any PC. I also did this for WIN 10 with the WIN 10 guide. ( now i have a dual boot PC)

Its true a stripped down Win 7 has lower inputlag then a stripped Win 10. Not only can u check this in Latenymon but u can actually feel it also just by moving a window up and down in Windows. I am pretty happy with that.
Now i want to put that ultra low input lag to good use in Quake Live!!!

Unfortunate Quake live on Win 7 gives lag spikes ( the red vertical lines in the lagometer) when someone new joins a server or just at random sometimes. On my stripped Win 10 Quake Live runs great but it would be so cool if i could just run it on WIN 7!

I can then better play uncapped on my WIN 10 boot.

r_primitives 2 does not help,
I deleted both qzconfig.cfg and repconfig.cfg and disabled steam cloud and tried again with a new config; same problem
Anyone here got any idea what can cause the lagspikes in Win 7 when a new player joins the server? And on other random moments? On my Win 10 build QL runs great with the same exact in gamesettings.
I hope u guys can help me out. Tnx

I finally did it! i found out how to get the green line stable in the lagometer. Put your modem in Bridged mode and get a Ubiquiti Edgerouter X ( 50$) and enable the QoS option.
Its all about bufferbloat. If u dont get a A or A+ rating at the speedtest u can forget about getting a straight green line. I had C grade first. After the Ubiquiti Edgerouter X its A. and finally a stable green line most of the time in QL!!!
I found out about this through the Battle(non)sense video Gamer Setup - This router can save your marriage! video,.

hi there it's me

Honestly its doesnt make sense to write anything about this guy, because watching teaser and second video will make is obvious for everyone
But there are always people who are in doubt and it's ok. For these people I will do some explanation.

About his aim style.
Well it's hard to watch honestly, the way he aim... He is like swinging his mouse left and right all the time. While spamming AD like crazy. And he is aiming like that all the time except really close fights when his whole screen is just an enemy model. It's not like he is very good at strafing. But he does some weird moves that I wasn't able to explain until I found out that his crosshair snapping at other enemies. And that explains why he struggles to aim when there is multiple enemies in the background and sometimes he even stop shooting and making really long strafes just to position himself toward the wall to focus on enemy that are close to him and prevent his crosshair from snapping on random enemies.

I think that he using a bind, trigger bind that makes his crosshair snap on target, but not permanently, its like assist for aim. When he losing tracking he hits that trigger button and it snaps to the target and since he shaking his crosshair a lot it looks +/- alright. I mean he probably using it not all the time but sometimes. Guess he spent a lot of time figuring out how to use it and when, to make it look like legit aim. But aim it's not just how you hit, it's also how you move… it's funny how those cheating kids don't underestimate experience...

So here is the links
This one is like a teaser just like a mini movie for my new friend
This one should make it clear that the guy is cheating
This one is a link of his stream some hilarious 2v2 at the end (aimbot for rockets included)
And a demo where he snaps on other target (last moment from teaser)
I hope all the links are working. If something is wrong let me know.
It's pure luck. Twitch keep vods for 14 days and when i downloaded his vod it was already 12 days old vod, so few more days and it's gone forever.

I couldn't do a better video. I pick bad editing software. I was looking for a free one and I chose the one that have nice ui. And it have nice and intuitive ui but working really bad. After some time it starts lagging, cpu hits 100% load and i can't preview what i am working on. So all this moments i cut is like 1/4 of his stream. All these trigger moments are from 1 or 2 hours of gameplay.
Btw his stream is recommended to watch. His comments become really hilarious after understanding that he is just a little aimbotting kid. At some point he said “OMG you got destroyed and i am not even warmed up yet”
All the most obvious moments are from his stream (yea another genius streaming how he using cheats) And this moments is so obvious that it should be good proof. But i also have a few demos where he snaps at other enemies it might be enough to vac ban him.

Bonus clip of his buddy sldr (sharing same config, spamming same binds) Sad part is that it's not only these two geniuses.

The nature of randomness and short-term memory in AFPS (15 comments)
Posted by EmeraldTiger @ 16:06 CST, 15 February 2021 - iMsg
So in my mod Uber Arena, one of the taglines I emphasize in promoting it is that it "uses no random number generators" in its game mechanics. That is, every new mechanic is designed to be 100% deterministic and predictable - in theory. But I've been thinking about this and wondering, just because something is not using RNG, does that mean it is indeed 100% skill-based and predictable?

One counterexample I can think of is the headshot system in Unreal Tournament, something that has proven to be a point of major controversy between the UT and Quake crowds, likely because of disagreements about the nature of predictability in game mechanics. So in UT, if you can headshot a player, you will almost always instantly frag them (or at least do significant damage). Obviously, to accomplish this, you have to "go for the head" (as Thor/Thanos would put it). Now, in theory, this is a 100% deterministic mechanic; it is based on a predictable variable - the position of the enemy player's head on the screen and how much screen space the head is occupying (closeness of the player). It seems like there would be no issue. Yet, headshots are often regarded as "random" despite, technically speaking, not being so at all.

The argument here is that, even though it is theoretically predictable, the amount of precision required to pull off headshots using actual skill rather than luck is so great that it exceeds human capabilities, even at top-level tournament play. The railgun, on the other hand, while also requiring good aim, is not so "hard" that a skilled player can't learn how to become a good RG user, as the area that needs to be hit is larger.

It seems, then, that there is a point at which, if a deterministic mechanic becomes sufficiently complex, it "degrades" into randomness because the player cannot feasibly track all of the variables, a phenomenon we'll call "decay into randomness". And to be fair, it's not like RNGs used in games are really random either; it's common knowledge that they use pseudo-randomness generated by seeding the computer clock and performing complex math to output a seemingly random result. Obviously, no one would seriously be expected to calculate RNGs like this on-the-fly in the middle of a heated arena FPS match.

The question is, at what point does "decay into randomness" occur? Where do you draw the line? What are the variables? Is there a formula or algorithm to describe it? For example, in the case of the headshots vs. RG, how small does the area to be hit need to become before it "becomes random"? There is disagreement here, since some argue headshots are skillful and you just need to be good enough to aim at the head consistently, and others feel that is too much to expect out of even the most skilled players and thus it's pure luck. Who is right?

There is also Miller's Law from psychology, or the "Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two", from George A. Miller's famous 1956 paper, where he postulated that the human short-term memory capacity (roughly) ranges from 5 all the way to 9. This principle does put a cap on how many variables a player is reasonably expected to track in an arena FPS match. In a duel, for example, the player is likely timing the RA and MH, as well as attempting to derive the other player's position based on sound cues, which already takes up 3 "slots". If they're tracking another, lesser armor, that's another slot taken. And likely other, more subtle variables too. Once the capacity is exceeded, the player will have to start "dropping" game variables to keep track of and leave them to chance. Adding more things for a player to keep track of adds more skill up to a point, but once you reach the memory limit (which is made more complicated by its fuzziness), it could be argued that too many mechanics/variables might actually decrease skill. Is this true?

Finally, it seems there are some random game mechanics that do appear in competitive play, but are generally considered to be "acceptable". For example, in TDM, while the respawn times for power-ups are fixed, the initial spawn times are randomized. Why is this "okay"? Wouldn't it still be better if they were fixed as well, so players could time the initial spawn as well? Or is there something to be gained from making it random that somehow adds more skill, contrary to the intuition that randomness removes skill? (In Uber Arena, it's worth noting that initial spawn times are also fixed, at 45 seconds into the game, making them completely predictable)

I think this is a really fascinating topic and it would give some good insight into the nature of arena FPS design. Is there anyone with a good background in psychology that could provide more insight? Has there been previous research done on this?

Arena FPS games are dead (41 comments)
Posted by Rav3n @ 17:24 CST, 13 February 2021 - iMsg

QW - dead - but as a super old game still a little bit active, doing some leagues and cups, as a community they are doing quite ok
Q2 - don't care but probably dead
Q3/QL/cpma - dead
Q4 - dead
QC - is this is even a afps? Anyway it runs badly. Sadly most popular one..
Reflex - dead
Diabotical - dead, GD studio focused too much on Wipeout / Clan Arena, main game mode...
New game - not anytime soon

All games played by few players, mostly unplayable most of the time.
Still possible to find some pickup, play and have fun but it is depressing. Sad thing.

And we are all sitting in separate discords, making separate small tournaments instead of maybe joining forces.

Maybe some day Betsheda will close the QC servers and at least some people will go back other games. Even hard to find any sort of temporary alternative...

Sad. Who did this to Quake?...

QL Movie Making in 2021 (1 comment)

So last Quake fragmovie I did in 2009 and it was Quake3 using Q3MME as toolset for rendering. I have a couple of demos saved with time marks of some frags worth sharing or at least for me to make a summary of my Quake Live journey, the movie I'm gonna launch in my old age to remember how was it to be a Quaker.

My question is what are the 2021 tools available to boost up and make most efficient workflow for clip rendering? I'm looking for a tool that let's me navigate on the demo to select beginning and end of video sequence and render it in some nice way. I know there was wolfcamql, is it still the thing to go for?

Btw. the movie I mentioned was T13 Clan Fragmovie -
