Well I assume it's the javascript that causes the problem:

The best thing for me to do is rewrite the links so that the javascript is unnecessary. This should be entirely possible, I just need to find some spare minutes to tinker with the site again.

No, I dont think that is possible without javacript, thats the only way to control dymanic content without reloading the page, afaik. Or if you was thinking on CSS/DOM control of somthing in that way, but I doubt.
I posted a thread on the mozilla forums about this, hope it was OK for you.

What I can do is make it so that after you post a new comment, say id=123, that the page that loads afterwards is already www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=123#id123

Right ok, I've set links to comments to have the # in them now in the url. So the javascript is gone.

This should sort out the troubles.
