Good quality red mechanical switches, tenkeyless, good price, don't buy into hype of the ones you mentioned. That's my advice.

The layout is really important and these two meet the requirements.
My movement keys are UHJK and ALT key is for +attack, and for the last 6-7 years I played on some cheap logitech with almost the same layout.

I also like the Ducky mechs as well (same layout, but wit red cherry), but damn these Filcos look smooth as fuck.

Breaking old habits can be a good thing. Keys layout isn't so important.

I prefer Filco, sexy as fuck .. but expensive.
The Ducky one I like is ~91 $ (this one).
The Filco one is ~ 160 €

also nice are the corsair ones. they are a bit more fancy and "made for gamers" like for example razor, but they are built rather well i hear, although the leds on the blue ones tend to fail after a couple months. they are only ~120€ but feature aluminum body and very nice and sensible options not like the ducky where the windows key switch is underneath the keyboard...

Corsair are for keyboards what razer are for mice. Hell, I'd get a Razer keyboard BEFORE corsair any day. Build quality is shabby, they save costs on every piece and they're slowly becoming more and more gimmicky.

If you're going to dish out more than 100 bucks for a fucking keyboard than it better be fully mechanical.

Having mechanical switches. K60 or K90 were lacking ~22 mechanical keys.

I don't know if this was "fixed" and frankly I don't even care since you get a robust, high quality Das Keyboard for the same price.

I don't but my friend does. It's a solid build, keys feel nice. I've read that the keys aren't as good as cherry's, but for that price you should be laughing.

Better go for the one with pbt/pom keycaps, i got ducky with pbts after using steelseries 7g for many years and keycaps surely make the most difference in feel

I am a current owner of a Blackwidow 2013 edition, and if it were to break and I felt like buying a new mech. keyboard, I would also def. go for ducky. Only heard good things about them.

How can I find out what type of keycaps are used on a keyboard? For example from the tech specs of the BlackWidow this information about keycaps material is not present. Do you know what are the differences between the materials used form a 'feel' point of view?

If you're not exactly a keyboard aficionado I suggest looking elsewhere. Filco, while really good don't offer much for gamers. The price doesn't outweight actual performance compared to less expensive models. Filco really start shining if you devote A LOT of time typing.

When I first saw a picture of a Filco, it was like a classic car reconditioned .. and silently I said to myself "I must have it!".
I'm not a gamer, and I use my desktop at home less and less (unfortunately) :(, so any mech will be more than enough.
I looked into Duckys but I didn't had the "wow" feeling I had when seeing filcos.

I know you don't like razer products (saw your thread) but I use razer products (jittery abyssus and goliathus control extended) and I'm happy with them. It feels like anyone can have the BW, but Filco is that classic car :D.

I don't have much experience with them but mech keyboards for gaming always felt fishy to me. I always liked scizor switches for first person games and I stick with it. I remember someone (nvc?) admitting recently that mech keyboard may not be the best thing for fps. I guess it takes some time after paying 160€ for a keyboard.

When it comes to other games: remember Koreans hiting ludicrous apm on some cheap rubber dome keyboards in sc:bw?

I doubt anyone considering buying mech kb for "quake and twitch chat" would listen to this though. Enjoy your new keyboard! I just wish you it doesn't turn out to be worse than what you had before.

I was really happy with my logitech (a PS/2 that supported 5 key rollover) but it died on me 2 months ago :(.
I typed a little bit on a BW in a store and I liked the feeling as I remembered the mech keyboards that I had the chance to use when I was a child.
I know this is not a "must have" but everything that reminds you about childhood is worth the moneyz :).

Pros: longer lasting, better feeling, better performing, customizable keycaps, probably a hundred other little things I'm forgetting.

Cons: Some are kind of loud. MX Browns aren't too bad if you o-ring mod them. Topre switches are god-tier in terms of volume though.

Red switches aren't *too* loud. Honestly the loudness thing is something that bothers like 5% of people. It's kind of overblown. Most people who use mechanical keyboards actually enjoy the clackiness of them. It's good auditory feedback and it helps you type faster and more accurately.

It costs like 3 bucks and an hour of your time to mod them to be a little quieter. You just buy a big bag of orthodontic rubber bands (like for braces) on eBay or whatever, pull off the keycaps, and put bands on the switch stems individually. This helps absorb some of the "clack" noise of the key bottoming out.

You can watch a bunch of YouTube videos to hear what it sounds like. Or just go to whatever computer store you have nearby and try out a few display models. If you're in the US, Best Buy almost always has at least a couple of demo keyboards and switch testers.
