VGA supports it just fine. Its more about the CRT being able to handle it. Most CRT's you can run on 1280x960 120hz. Or 1024 at 160hz, that is if its a decent one :D

i use to play at 1024 x 768@60hz so it can be a nice upgrade !

In a manner of speaking you are correct, original VGA spec cannot attain 120hz refresh at any res. However, today you will be able to get 120hz at pretty much any resolution your monitor supports 120hz at.

Tldr, that piece of crap samsung should be able to run 120hz at 1280x960 due to its 121khz horizontal refresh (providing its hardware isn't run down). The interface itself will not be the limiting factor.

I will make a terrible attempt at explaining something about this, what I worked out, but since I now use a 144hz lcd the info is gone from my mind since a year ago.

It has to do with the kHz of the monitor (yes kHz, not the Hz), Most CRT will tell you how many kHz they are running at in the screen info page.

To my bad understanding the kHz is like the total bandwidth of the monitor. How fast its drawing (Hz) and how many pixels it has to draw (high res = more pixel = more bandwidth needed)

So it comes down to how many kHz can the CRT handle.

Running at 640x480 @ 60 hz
vs
Running at 640x480 @ 120 hz = double the kHz needed.

My CRT could handle enough to do 640 @ 120.
And when i would set it to 1280x1024 @ 60, the kHz would roughly come out about the same ballpark

And again something like 1024x768 @ 85 hz, roughly the same ballpark

Had you been trying higher res and or refresh it would push past the kHz the screen is capable and display -out of range-

Another tip is that Quaklive would never accept the tweaked refresh like 640 @ 120 unless you went into monitor settings and selected something like ( unhide compatible refreshrates) in that part of winXP settings where refresh rates are all greyed out. (hope you know what I mean and hope that helps somewhat)

Also without much hands on experience with many CRT, but im guessing most generic type 17 inch wont manage a high kHz and you have much better chances with more professional bigger sized screens
