MEGADRIVE

Mega Drive (Genesis) was better for Arcade style games (SF II Turbo withstanding) whereas SNES was better for pure entertainment games. Dunno why ppl continue to this day with the retarded X vs. Y type battles as though you can only own one.

Personally I just always bought each console that had super good games and only bought the super good ones. Dunno who the fuck was buying a Playstation then spending real money on Croc or Spyro the dragon instead of just buying an N64 for Mario64 etc. Well I do know... retards.

in its defense it made gaming cool, something no other console can really claim beyond gamers who played them. But yeah all that crap like Destruction Derby, wipeout didn't do much for me.

Ridge Racer was pretty impressive as a flagship game. though still a long way from the arcade.

in the relevant sense yes. i mean you're asking what we enjoyed about a game that we played as kids and things that appealed to us then probably don't appeal to us now. we might not like something today because we're older, and/or simply because those were different times in general, and in relation to video games advancement. fashion for everything changes over time so comparisons through era is useless for the most part - certainly judging something we loved as kids, as adults, e.g. movies we loved then but hate now, is.

as for your question I played sonic religiously on my mega drive, I don't remember what exactly appealed to me. It was really fast, much faster than mario, had an addictive soundtrack, a variety of fun challenging levels and I remember how awesome it was collecting those coins when you hit a jack pot spinning at a crazy speed. well that's how I remember it, I might not like it if I played it now, I'd love to try but my damn sega doesn't work anymore. =)

Sonic was always lacking gameplay wise as a character, the graphics and sound did a big thing for its enjoyment, graphics and sound don't age aswell as game play which is why you're probably not that impressed. I promise you being a kid and playing it nearly 20 years ago was good.

Sonic was arguably always an inferior game to mario in terms of gameplay/design, but almost every sonic fan will tell you it had its own charm and offered something mario didn't.

At first it was sega vs nintendo war at school, but even when i had both systems because of mariokart and street fighter 2, I still preferred sonic, but always acknowledged mario was a better game.

As a gamer, growing up as a kid in the late 80's-90's was as good as it will probably ever get, there was just so much progress to see.

It was their main mascot, but, I'll explain the best I can since I grew up with both.

Nintendos Mario series was fun, but it was never really about speed. People who wanted to play a game like Mario but wanted to play it fast, were out of luck. I imagine this was the main selling point of Sonic.

I'll discuss Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Sonic and Knuckles, all for the Genesis, since those were the games that mattered.

Sonic 1 was pretty simple, not a lot of powerups, not a lot of enemies, only six chaos emeralds, etc. In my opinion it was Sonic 2 and Sonic3&K (Sonic 3 and Knuckles (They are technically one game, but split into two)) that made the series amazing.

One thing that Sonic did better than Mario was story. Back in the 8 and 16 bit era, we didn't have a lot of games that explained stories in text, other than games like RPG's. So, in games like Mario, the story was very simple. What Sonic did better than Mario, was have a GOOD story to it. Mario EVEN TO THIS DATE is the same story, over and over. Sure, tried and true, but nothing special.

Sonic 3&K was the best story out of any popular game at the time. It had a good plot, the levels transitioned between each other, and the story was subtly explained through little things through the game. It make sense, and was an amazing story.

The Chaos emeralds added a SKILL to Sonic too. Mario was mostly just about beating the game, Sonic did that, but +1'd it. The Chaos Emeralds were a great addition to the game since the first one. It offered a way to beat the game 100%, get the good ending, turn to Super Sonic, etc. It was rewarding. It wasn't easy either. Sure, it's easy now with emulators and save states, but in a game like Sonic 2 or 3, you only have so many chances to get the emeralds, especially in Sonic 1. If you screwed up too many times, you'd reach a point where you had to turn the game off and restart.

Yes, it's nostalgia for some people, but I believe they're still amazing games to this date, and people should be able to enjoy them. Games these days are a joke, they're just cinematic bullshit movies that you play, and are dead easy.

Anyway, Sonic is a great series. When it went to Dreamcast, they lost it a bit (Sonic Adventure 2 was decent, but, a lot didn't like it). Yes they've pretty much ruined the franchise by trying to go the Nintendo route (add some unique feature, characters, etc) but unfortunately failed. They knew it, but kept adding dumb characters. There's an interview with some Sonic exec where he was told that the community hated the new characters and dumb shit, but he didn't care and said they'd keep doing it.

Sonic 4 left off where S3&K ended, so it should make for an interesting story, assuming they keep to the Sonic 1-3 routes. No extra character bullshit, consistent game play, etc.

I was worried about the targeting attack in Sonic 4, and I'm sure others are too. But recently I played a game called Sonic Megamix, a modded Sonic CD game with all new levels, characters, music, etc. They've even added a targeting dash attack identical to Sonic 4, and it flows VERY well. Anyway, I hope this helps. Sonic was a great series that was at least equal to Mario, if not better. It offered amazing story, good game play, skillful and difficult extra content, and was extremely fun. Seems that SEGA was always one step ahead of Nintendo, but I guess not anymore.

Sonic Adventure 2 deserved to be it's own game is all. It was good AS a game, but pulled too much away from the Sonic model. Sonic Adventure would have perfect if it was JUST sonic+tails, and not 10 fucking times playing through the same story with horrible characters. E-102 was kinda fun, but fuck big the cat. >=O

I agree with you. It is rather boring. However, back then I thought or rather, I convinced myself that it was the shit. Probably because I owned a Mega Drive and didn't have access to Super Mario.

It was the same thing with my friends. The Mega Drive was a lot more popular here in India than the SNES. Sega sales began early and most of the kids lapped up thousands of consoles before Nintendo even brought the SNES here (I'm still not sure if it was even officially available locally or considered an import).

There were so many better games on the Sega Mega Drive. Sonic was just a fad and not a classic like Super Mario in any way.

My opinion.

Like mentioned before, the game was back in the days astonishing with it's usage of the existing technology in terms of graphics and sound. Also the ability to run that fast through the levels in a fluent manner was breath-taking because similar effects were only possible on a big heavy arcade machines. Mario was slow and wasn't that graphic intense.





Movies and other media were different too in terms of pace.

The game back in the days was fast, faster than itīs competitor. Itīs comparable to F-Zero on SNES, Wip3out on the Playstation or MS-DOS, where it was pushing gameplayspeed and graphic-build-up to a new limit. Other games had nearly the same effect. Wave Racer on N64 maybe too?

The gameplay itself wasnīt as creative as Mario games did, but if you compare Sonic 1 with Mario 1, well itīs quite easy to tell who wins, when it just comes to a feature show. Sonic was it!





Maybe it is fairer to compare Super Mario 3 (SMB 3) to Sonic 1, because SMB 3 was released in the USA in 1990 and Europe in 1991, although released in Japan already in 1988. Sonic The Hedhehog was released in 1991. From this aspect Sonic 1 lacked a lot of creative things which were in SMB3, such as the different power-ups Mario could take to change his abilities (Racoon Mario, and so on), also the level selection map introduced a wider range of choices to play one level or to skip it by taking a different route through the world, instead of just going through a game in one direction with no other choice at all.

Later Sonic Games (Sonic 2 (1992), Sonic 3 (1994) improved slightly on the part of graphics, sound, story. But the Mario series improved in other features, which appealed more to the masses.



Sonic 3 is my favourite. But it still didnīt come out with a lot of creative things in terms of gameplay.



Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast was nice, but the speed (to the edge of current technology) was not breath-taking.



On the one hand Iīm happy that they are continuing with Sonic 4, but on the other hand Iīm afraid, that this release will be a disaster. The videos shown on their official website are showing exactly the gameplay from the series in the 90s. But this "speed" and "graphics" are not astonishing anymore to todays young gamer generation. There are way more impressive games nowadays.

You throw around "not as creative" a lot without a single example. Having random extra gameplay elements does not make the game good. Sonic was better for sticking to the pure gameplay that made it popular to begin with, and it did it well. When they did expand on gameplay elements (See Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles), they still tried to keep it streamlined and integrated, where Mario did not.

In regards to Sonic 4, I don't think it's being sold or marketed as a new game for the current generation, I think it's being sold as a game that's fun, low cost, and provides more content for people who loved Sonic 1-3&K.

At first I thought it was going to suck, yes, but after looking into the videos and content more, I think it will be okay. The targeting attack seemed like it could ruin the game, but I played Sonic Megamix (info in my comment that you linked to) and it had a similar mechanic. It worked and flowed very well, so I don't worry about that anymore.

The game looked slower, but there's a video with a dev at E3 where he states that sonics initial acceleration speed will be increased before the final game is released. So, that's good.

The extra stages look somewhat challenging, maybe it will be actually hard to get all seven chaos emeralds.

The graphics look really nice, I love the blue sky :D

I do worry about the music. That was one amazing thing in Sonic 1-3&K, the music. It was a really good electronica style, I still love it to this day. I'm worried that the music they'll put out in this game will be bland elevator music bullshit.

I have an idea. I wonder if this Sonic 4 game has the ability to let you playback your own music? Sonic's speed could be matched to the speed/bpm of the played music, like in Audio-Surf? Also the graphic palette and video effects could change, depending on what style of music you listen to... more hypnotized, wobbling, or dark tones, according to Hip-Hop, Classic or Metal songs.

SonicCD was the best sonic i ever played. The level design and the soundtrack are mind-blowing. Should be able to find it on torrent this days since Sega made a SonicCD port for the PC. Definitely check it out :D
