Seems fine, I bought the original with small feet and was disappointed it would no thit 500Hz.

Then I got a g5 (LULZ<<) then I ordered new 518 (noted they took big feet from g5, so gg logitech) and I noticed it held a stable 500 hz.

I can't comment on other stuff as I don't Quake anymore (Bored+busy+SF4), but I'm sure if there were such problems with the original, they would have attempted a fix on v2 because the feet and HZ are a bit more than a colour change or something purely aesthetic.

I jump between this and mx510, I think I found a mouse I'm happy with. now I just need a serious FPS game with some new mechanics and maps to play.

how does polling rates matter unless it affects max perfect control speed? which afaik only mice with 8-bit wide data paths do and both versions of the mx518 have 16-bit data paths.
its technically impossible to notice the difference between 125hz/500hz in terms of input lag on any normal screen. do polling rates have some other kind of difference in terms of input/tracking?

so it performs fine? i wont have to worry about hunting down an old version if the one i have now breaks down? :P
some guy on youtube comments said it skipped on high speeds on cloth pads. if it really does have 4m/s max perfect that cant be true. has sujoy (the guy who made that huge mouse benchmark in 07) tested the mouse?

No way, there is big difference between 125hz and 250hz.

AFTER 250 it becomes less noticeable, but that's just the expontetial stuff which applies to pretty much anything in life.

Personally I would just overlcok it to 250hz and leave it at that.
Its by far the biggest, noticable gain AND its not putting too much straing on the hardware.
beyond 250hz and it starts to get like the DPI argument, it doesn't really matter anywhere near as much.

I assure you they'll spot the difference. Perhaps we're one about different things, the bottom line is, the mouse feels smoother and seems to track better, by track better I mean it skips less between movement.

You can see it on screen, at 125hz, even moving the mouse slowly you tell its stutters from point to point, at 250 its a lot less jumpy.

I'm not really sure how useful that is in game, but its very useful for snipers because the hit box is so small you benefit from the extra precision.

Don't care how it is on paper, it just feels better at 250.

Try playing at 120hz (or even 75hz) monitor refresh with a 500hz mouse for lets say... a week, maybe two.

Then switch it to 60hz/monitor and 125hz/mouse

If you can't see the lag on your screen there, then you need to get your eyes tested or something, because that shit is choppy as fuck and gives me a headache after 5 minutes.

Ok i'll explain it. Now all screens lag 1 frame, because if you make an input during a frame it has to wait for that frame to end before it can show you that input on the screen. How much 1 frame is naturally depends on the hz of that screen.
Now since it always has to wait 1 frame anyway, it doesn't matter how soon the computer gets the input as long as it is within that 1 frame before since YOU won't get information until after the entire frame is over.
Im not great at explaining things but I hope you get it.

There might be something else with the tracking that is affected by polling rates that I'm unaware of however. Like less skipping and smoother tracking. But in terms of LAG, you can't tell the difference on a normal screen.

If we were imaginging things then why do I scoff at the endless DPI incrases that mouse companies use to trick companies.

DPI stopped being relevant around the 800 to 1600 mark, but polling rate was the one thing that made an instant improvement.

This isn't enigma, go and do some random testing on people, I assure you if they use it at 125 hz for a 10 seconds then at 250 or 500.

They'll tell, unless they're complete newbs with computers who can't even DBL click (i.e my mum).

I've got the first mx518 and I've got it running on 500hz. I mean, even the mx500 is capable of 500hz in XP and W7. Btw. G5 sucks

400dpi without setpoint + overclocked at least to 250hz should make it >4m/s perfect control

I've got mine at 400dpi and 500hz but I still get negative accel. Going to try a different mouse pad tomorrow. I've currently got a QcK heavy.

make sure you have no setpoint installed

also there's a problem that the mouse moves faster to the right than to the left on dark pads so it might be that
only cloth/hybrid pads it's perfect on are everglide titan fnatic or qpad ct
though it could be that it skips on qck, never tried them together myself

It turns out it was the mousepad. I've had this pad for quite a few years now and it's getting pretty worn.

i'm using the latest version so i can use a custom dpi and they work fine

The mx518 is capable of 2000 dpi max. with the latest setpoint drivers, it that true? (I don't dare installing them bacause last time I installed setpoint drivers I could never get rid of their influence until a format c:)

hmm doesn't appear to be true. mine maxes out at 1800. i don't recommend using either 1800 or 2000 though :P
