Okay so I recently had problems in vista with refresh rates but found a workaround using nvidia's custom resolution settings.. same with windows 7 RC but I only got my 800x600 res working and 640x480 was still being capped at 60.

Today I updated to windows 7 final and I'm having MORE problems with the refresh rate. Now it's capping both resolutions to 85 and the nvidia custom res settings are ALSO capping it at 85 now.

I tried downloading ReForce and surprisingly it actually worked.. I had my monitor at 800x600 res using 120hz finally!

I then went to restart my PC and when windows loaded again it was back to capped. ReForce no longer worked and I'm going crazy.

The "Hide modes not supported by monitor" option in windows monitor settings is disabled/grayed out even though I have the monitor driver.

any help would be appreciated since I'm done trying to find a fix for this bullshit..

It seems like every update of windows and/or nvidia is getting worse for refresh rates.. do they not know ppl still use CRTs or what?

Yikes. I literally have my win 7 pro disc sitting next to my laptop and was just about to walk upstairs and install it on my quake desktop. That would be a huge bummer if you can't use high refresh rates. Then again, I would probably get used to 85mhz and finally buy an LCD and be done with it.

aboutt half way down the page, make custom res with GFT mode to get high refresh with 190.62.

with that driver version?

you probably are playing at 800x600 or 1024x768 no? maybe you have to delete those res's and recreate them as custom with those options.

I think it has something to do with my CRT monitor driver since it's using one made by microsoft (it's not generic) I'm guessing they don't have the timings correct making windows and nvidia think 120hz isn't supported on 800 res... is there a way to edit/hack the driver so I can set the max hz there?

I really don't understand why the "hide modes not supported" is grayed out...

i was able to find an older driver for this monitor but it didn't change anything.. windows still thinks 85 is the max refresh rate this monitor can use even though it is not.

I REALLY don't understand how ReForce worked the first time I tried but now it doesn't or why the "hide modes..." is disabled/grayed out.. I can't believe I spent all day trying to fix this shit with no luck.

I'm using a VGA > DVI adapter for my vga monitor connection.. are u also using this? and which pin from which connection did u remove?

just remove 12th pin at vga cable and that's it
the easiest and usually the only working way to solve it, believe me :(

had same problem, was brainfucking for a few hours to make it work at higher rates and nothing helped. Then i decided to remove the pin:

after that i reinstalled the driver and added the resolutions i need via rivatuner/nvidiaCP. works like a charm now

i have no idea how to remove the pin tbh.. and I had my refresh rate working in windows 7 RC so I don't see why I would have to do this to get it working in win7 final

since win7 they made it only possible to use resolutions which are in the supported resolutions list @ the internal monitor flash memory (so called EDID). by removing the pin you make it impossible for windows 7 to read that flash memory so it allows to use any resolution u wish.

nope i was very careful.. removed only the 12th pin, but hey it fixed my problem! only added a worse one :/

its a very old monitor I'm suprised it lasted this long anyways.

I thought there are programs to force any signal you like? Maybe Rivatuner or Powerstrip? Dunno... try it.

btw, my monitor goes fine at 1680x1050@120hz on win7

he's using CRT (true 0ms input delay), so the drivers aren't gonna be really comparable.

thats weird, but if you reinstall your videocard drivers, it should be the same as before Reforce.

Reforce might not be working well (enough) on win7, try these others?

well it went back to the way it was before reforce after i restarted so i didn't need to reinstall.. and i don't need to try the others anymore since i broke my monitor basically by removing the pin 12 (altho that DID fix the cap issue, i was getting 120hz but the colors were all jacked)
