Some games using the engine hasn't even been released yet, so I doubt it will go open source anytime soon.

John Carmack seemed to hint at this years Quakecon that it would not be released until Rage was completed. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Previous generation of id engines are usually released shortly after two conditions are met. First is that there are no more games planned that use a license for that engine and the second is that a game that uses their new engine has been released and has been out for a while. So you will most likely have to wait for around 2 more years or so, since id tech 4 is the newest engine that id software has released games on.

Is it still going to be open sourced? I'm not sure if Besheda will allow those things anymore.

the engines have become so complex, only professional can take use of it ... all these modellling, mapping, texturing, it all takes sooo much time and of course skill ...

There are people doing some clever renderer-hacks over at doom3world using just the gamecode and shaders who would love to have access to the renderer code.

For example, people in this thread have managed to get HDR rendering working in Doom3, but given access to the engine code they could make it even better.

The soft shadows implementation would definitely be better done in the engine.

hows that clever, theyre doom3world tards who just changed a few settings in cmds/cvars, best way to make softer shadows is to make new light materials a pale white and not 255 255 255

Actually the best way to do it would be to use the Crysis or UT3 engine as its pretty much standard in there.
