The weirdest shit about english in my opinion is that in the netherlands even the worst bum in the country speak beautiful, fluent english. That always amused me :)

i think it really depends on how comfortable the person is at speaking the language. i know a lot of ppl that knew lots of spanish but the were just so uncomfortable with speaking it, it just got all choppy and they would not try to develop an accent.

I dont see why people are still determined to undermine Q4. It's the game for, at minimum, all of this year... deal with it.

undermine? i'd say the majority of the community dislikes or outright hates q4 for various reasons, most of which can be summed up as "we have the perfect engine already, and perfect mods built by the community, why'd you have to fix what wasn't broken?"

go ask the best duelers, off the record, if they like q4 or are just playing it for a shot at the money. you will never be able to publish the replies for all to see if they trust you enough to talk to you, but none of them will say that they love q4, because all of them are q3 holdovers. they already played the most competitively successful game on the best engine to date, and they know q4 doesn't come close to any of the other quakes.

(EDIT: also, duelers might be the only ones making money, but there's more to competitive gaming than 1v1. what do TDM players and CTF teams think about q4's further dumbing down of team play due to the ignorance of raven? i can tell you what most north american teams/players think)

quake4 was undermined the moment that raven put it on the drawing board. if you don't believe that then you are sadly mistaken. raven got the job because they can deliver it to the publisher on time and john carmack is too busy building rockets to worry about the multiplayer community.

why should we deal with it when it's so clearly obvious the game is busted? mod teams have done for free what raven couldn't do for untold millions of dollars.

just because big money decided that it was the game of the year, all this year, doesn't mean we have to deal with it. it's a slap in the face to those who thought that competitive gaming could be about anything more than selling some hardware. how is play supposed to evolve when game mechanics change every five years?

fair enough but the q3 community has been dwindling for a while now, it's only since the release of q4 that there has been such a strong push to bring q3 back.

it was frustrating to play? rofl the game had a learning curve equal to that of ball-and-cup, the game was easy too to play, not frustrating. People just didn't like getting owned by someone who had a clue how to play a fast game.

If you have 100 HP and Gold arrmor you dont die from a stake, same if you have MH and silver.

In q4 you get raild a few time after you have controle and die. In PK it takes som mad skills to hit alot of stakes, becous it isent instant hit, it dosent land wher you aim (becous of its banan like movement), and everyone moves alot faster with 100% aircontrole.

And tbh the stake was one of the best things in PK.

well the point is that u have a luckbased weapon that makes 100dmg as a respwn weapon.
so lets say that its a final and u just killed your opponent, its 9-10 1min left, u have 90hp and the guy respawns behind u.
in any other game 90hp would be a pretty decent to spawn rape him whit but in pk u could be killed by a lucky shot in the back.
other then that there's nothing wrong whit the stake gun, just not as a respawn weapon.

That game needed a Respawn weapon like that, becous of the fast movment that lead to alot of spawnrapeing. That weapon gave you a chans to get back into the game.

It would NEVER work to have a weapon like that as a start weapon in any game but PK. But in PK it was perfeckt.

it works in in qw and CPMA so no its was not "needed" and map control is a part of fast paced games. strong luckbased weapons will never be suited as a respawn weapon.

Imo you cant compre PK to CPMA. DM psycho had like 5 spawn points, and 3 of them wher in the same room (or 2 in 1 room but you could see the one in the smal room next to GA from the 2 other spawns).

Almost every map was smal and had teleporters leading to the other side of the map. spawn rapes in CPMA has nothing on the rapes in PK ;D.

as a side note i think every game should have a stake gun instead of the rail, becous the stake is more skill based then the rail.

i'd say there is alot more spwanrape in CPMA and alot of smal maps but thats a part of the game, get mapcontrol and be able to take advantage of it. getting killed by a lucky stake is frustrating when u where suppose to spawn rape him and stuff like that are not suppose to happend in a competitive game. thats was probably why most of the world tour players (if not all of them) thought it was a frustrating game.

You make it sound like everytime you are going to rape somone you get staked, and thats not the case.

If you controle the Gold arrmor you can take 1 stake in the head and still be alive, and 2 stakes in a row is kinda rare.

The stake gives the other player som hope (not much but som), to get back into the game even tho the other player has both Gold and Mega.

and u make it sound like everytime u respawn u get spawn raped and its impossible to find a weapon in time.
all i'm saying is when u play for 150 000$ a lucky respawn stake should not be possible in the a tight game. that kind of respawn weapon is just not suited for a competitive game.

i guess Vo0 uber respawn kills someone in that movie your talking about? that can be find in random picked CPMA demo aswell and imho its a part of that kind of fast paced dm game.
and even if its ultra exteme in that movie of yours they should have fixed the spawn points, having the stake gun as spawn weapon is not the solution.

No you wont get spawn raped every time, and the stake is not random luck weapon. It has a set weapon trejectory so you can predict wher its going to land, and wher you need to fire to hit with it. But unlike other weapons it takes alot of skills, and it can be dodged.

So all in all its a nice and balance weapon.

If you have less then 140 gold arrmor (think that was enuf to survive a stake) and 100 HP you shouldent go hunt for spawn fraggs if you dont want the chans that he kills you right of the spawn.

In the end the chans that you kill him befor he stakes you (realy fast rockets + the RL has a chaingun as altfire) is kinda slim.

Whether dumbed down or not, q4 was/is never going to be very big. It's still just DM. The people that don't have 3 hours every night to practice have moved on.

Im not sure if thats what you meant, but practice time has nothing to do with the gametype.

3 hours a night isnt much compared to what top CounterStrike and warcraft3 players do (not to mention the korean StarCraft players....).

I was more referring to the whole 'play to win'. There is no 'play for fun' type players. In CS you can go into a pub and be crap and still have a great time. Try it in q4 and you will spend a day trying to get into a server, and when you finally get in, 15 minutes trying to find a gun.

Thats because a starcraft game can last an hour. Quake players can lose an entire game with one wrong turn, CS and WC3 players can make 10 mistakes and no one notices

I think you can't blame raven for everything, I know one of the leveldesigners there, and he's told me that id was very hands on throughout the production, deciding about this and that etc. Like for example, Lost Fleet had 2 yellow armors and a different layout to begin with, but "item control is lame"(someone from id actually said this) and then they had to change it to one armor.

They were also responsible for the rail ledge up there on The Edge, above the jumppad and one jump away from the quad.

If id got this involved in the leveldesign, I'm pretty sure they were this involved in the rest of the game as well.

the engine was perfect though. and cpma was the perfect game made on the perfect engine (havent played the new versions of it but it was the most fun).

Indeed CPMA is the perfect game on the perfect engine, it's a shame nobody is willing to give it a shot. More speed and excitement of painkiller/quakeworld with the weapons and balance of q3 but on new unique maps.

Thats pretty obvious imo. Big events quit Q3 as the main 1v1 game. People didn't whine about it because they where waiting for "the best QUAKE experience of them all wrapped up all in one." (c) Tim Willits. And to a player that has a clue, that means:

GTV, Q3 alike or better netcode, brightskins (ffs, even PK had), playable maps, more models, the same smooth feeling as Q3, a sound system that isn't huge crap (resuming, the same good things that Q3 had). Those things where basic, and those things should have been out of the box if they cared about MP.
So, avoid the "it taked years to improve Q3 to what it is nowadays" pointless argument , because they had osp has the perfect example of what a competitive 1v1 needs.

9 months latter and Q3 its still far from anything you want to mention in terms of solid engine, competition, and fun to play/watch.

So, when the rest of the comunity and big event organizators realize that its the best option for competitive 1v1, im sure we can expect a Q3 comeback, and to stay as the main 1v1 game for long. Because swithing every year or two to different, beta development status games is what makes this a joke.
