Not the same thing, the basic purposes of cellphones can be done equally well on all types, regardless of their cost. Not the same with inet connections.

Aside from that, do you really need a phone that can be used to browse the web or msn or whatever, i think not.

Edit: and if you really do need all that stuff for god knows which reason youre better of buying a pda or psp on the side

It's an accessory since you tend to have it with you all the time and have to use it a lot. People spend a lot of money on their clothes and accessories, so I guess it's natural to want a phone to suit your personality. Even getting a basic no-frills phone is a retro fashion statement :).

I more or less agree about the looks part, however you dont need to spend a ton of money on ridiculous functions as well :)

some of the newer ones can get digital tv (i.e. sky) for about £5 a month

meh, i use my cell phone a lot beyond just making/taking calls, organizer, games (boring work) etc. Plus nothing wrong with a little bit of looks to make it a nice accessory. =\

only problem with the w950 is that i doesnt have a camera! but if u dont use one, then it dont matter :)

I stopped using a mobile, and switched to a PDA and just use skype for telephone over WLAN or UMTS (even though it goes against my service agreement). It has done wonders to my phone bill.
I try to keep all communication to email.
