Most left-handed players I know use the mouse with the right hand. Try both, and whichever is most comfortable, go with.

Left-handers are not just inverted right-handers. The reaction times are very similar for both left and right hands as we're basically right-handers with additional wiring. It's only right-handers who're slower with the off-hand so don't bother switching.

This stuff is nice, however if22 is the only left handed dueler I've heard of. What % of left handed players play right? Googling the authors gives a number of additional papers.

There's plenty I can say about my experience switching between different activities (guitar, tennis, batting, quake) using left/right hand. Might type it later if I'm inclined.

Blokey was a lefty too and I'm sure others are. There are a lot of left-handers playing right-handed in CPM at least, I think it's rare to play left-handed.

Zulg was also a lefty who actually moused with his left hand.

I'm left handed but I taught myself to write with my right hand also... My shaft accuracy went from 50 to 80% !!!

mouse makers need to acknowledge there are left handed people and make ergo-mice for us the same way they make ergo-mice for the rest of you.

Thinking about it though I drum and when I practice playing all left handed for a month, I do tend to get better overall, maybe because I am letting the other side process the data first hand instead of only being notified by the corpus callosum? I might try in CS see if playing left for a month makes me better over all :P. So based on my drumming experiences I would guess you are very wrong, but I am about to test myself :P

I think largely as a result of this I can write pretty well with my right hand. Interesting given what someone else mentioned about writing practice to improve aim.

Hard to know how much is nature or nurture though? Are left-handers more competent with their right-hands than right-handers are with their left simply because of use (living in a right-handed world)?

Personally I'm left handed and I use the mouse in my right hand. Ph4ntom is the same. And I know of a few top local players that are the same. Perhaps if you started off left handed your aim would have been better, but I think the learning curve to re-learn how to aim would be more trouble than it's worth. If you're gona spend that much time learning to use your other hand, you might as well be using it to perfect the hand you're currently using, which would probably pay bigger dividends anyways.

I'm left-handed that used the mouse in the right hand. Several years back I had same dilemmas as the author of this thread so I decided to switch to my dominant left hand. It took me approximately two months to get back to my old level and feeling. Can't say if it was worth it but I remember that I had a lot of fun relearning how to move and aim properly. Nowadays I use mostly left hand but I switch back to right one from time to time just for the fun (and it's not like I have to relearn again - I just pick the feel instantly, heck my aim with right hand even improved while I was using left hand only!). Also before deciding to switch from right to left I practiced writing with my non-dominant right hand hoping it would improve my aim. Right now there's really no difference wether I use left or right hand for writing. So while I can't say that I improved my game by doing this it was still a fun experience (and at least I can boast about being ambidextrous ;)).

I'm in the exact same situation (but minus writing practice), and about a month into switching for fun. I think it would take another week or two of high activity to completely transition. Finally hit a few 55% rail games. Going on vacation for 2 weeks though, so...

One thing it's illuminated so far, is the distance mental coordination of knowing how to hit shots and where to position will take you. The dichotomy of some things is interesting too. a few "harder" prediction rails and aim+strafing were no problem after a few days, other relatively basic "jump here while shooting" situations are virtually impossible at first.

I remember that at first when I wanted to strafe left I would strafe right =) I guess it's because keys are 'mapped' to specific finger (so you don't have to think each time which key to press - your brain does it automatically) and my brain was still thinking that I was using the other hand... it was a funny experience hitting walls all the time =)

you are pretty dumb for switching. you aren't going to see any improvement in aim / coordination. the only reason you probably switched was so you could have the gimmick of being a left handed player. although im sure having people think "WHOAH THAT GUY CERTAINLY IS UNIQUE, USING THE MOUSE WITH HIS LEFT HAND AND ALL" is definitely worth the months spent relearning how to aim.

Funny, I am basically a right hander, but accidently took the mouse with my left hand the first time I played the Half-Life Demo. Now, 10 years later, I am a bisexual, creative Boy-Man who feels very wrong when not being in Thailand :)

a friend of mine which is right hander use his left hand because in 90s he used to play doom 2 deathmatch with right hand for the arrow keys, and then back in quake2 times he decided to use left hand for the mouse; it's pretty funny how he uses right hand for the mouse when doing usual stuff, and when he start playing, he moves the mouse on the other side of the table -makes people paying attention when do that, like "look, this is serious shit, man"

But like so many, I throw with my right and mouse with my right. Although I have gamed plenty with my left. Mostly when I broke my right arm. I gamed for a few months with my left hand. I eventually switched back though to right hand mousing. It's good brain training to practice with opposite hand.

I have my gun models in CS on the left side as I am a right hander and I could swore I read an article about you dominant hand side eye being slightly faster, if anything its a psychosomatic advantage for me :P.

and about the left handers, those who aren't retarded do tend to be quite smart and gifted.
