Game of the year, anyone? I really thought that Portal 2 would have no real competition, but I just can't get over how much fun this game is. The world itself seems to be slightly bigger than Oblivion, but they packed so much content in to that space, it's absurd. All the little details really add up. The dungeons all feel unique and interesting, the characters look much better, the voice acting is superb, and while the graphics aren't top of the line, they still managed to make an absolutely beautiful world.

I wouldn't mind a few more types of enemies/monsters, as the world seems to be full of wolves/spiders. The interface needs a lot of work. Nothing that mods can't fix, though. I still haven't gone far in the main story, as the two characters I have made so far are a thief, and a mage. While they are incredibly fun for general quests, they are next to useless for fighting a dragon. It's possible to do, and it's not very hard, but it's damn near impossible to hit them in the air, and it just takes forever. I'm far more afraid of bears, sabercats, and giants. Stay the fuck away from giants.

Who else is playing it? Great game so far.

Graphics are sweet - a tiny bit dated, but they took full advantage of what they had. It looks beautiful. Sounds and music are awesome, but the TV news reports could have a few more clips. Gameplay is very fun, but I've only played stealth so far. Story and immersion are excellent, and the social events have a ton of different ways to play out.

edit: Just beat the game, and I can't wait to do another play through. Not only are there so many ways that any social interaction can go, but I've found (through reloading after disliking my results) that the exact same options you pick in a conversation can have multiple different results - even an identical choice playthrough from your first game can be different.

id/bethesda TF2 promotion (6 comments)
Posted by vedic @ 15:42 CDT, 4 August 2011 - iMsg
To those of you with TF2, Steam is promoting several id/bethesda games.

Quake 4 is now on steam, and buying it during the promotion gets you a rocket launcher replacement for soldier from Quake 1 with centered viewmodel. (pic in game)

Other items include a hat for sniper for buying brink, a hat for heavy for pre-ordering Skyrim, a weapon for engie for pre-ordering Rage, and a pip boy for engie for some fallout promotion that hasn't happened yet.

While these items appear to have crafting values (they are craftable, but not until the promotion is over), getting them during the promotion will give them genuine quality.

If you didn't already sign up, you probably still can. As long as you own any copy of borderlands on steam, you should have an early access key. The game must be installed (or downloading), and you simply right click on the game and "view CD key".

If you hadn't heard, there has been a HUGE advertising campaign for the "rapture" that was supposed to have happened on May 21st. It was started by a man named Harold Camping with familyradio, and this is his second rapture prediction - the last one was 1994. He believes that he found hints in the bible to the date, and merely made a miscalculation in 1994.

This guy spent $140,000 of his own money on ads for familyradio and may 21st. This is his reaction right at 6PM.

Mother tries to muder+suicide her children with a box cutter to avoid rapture

Harold Camping has since disappeared, and the familyradio site is down. His followers donated more than $100 million towards advertising this event world-wide. Many of them have spent all of their savings, quit their jobs/college/etc, and completely ruined their lives.

The end of Brood War? (84 comments)
Posted by vedic @ 17:11 CDT, 17 September 2010 - iMsg
Here's a few of the events that have been going on lately:

- Coach Ha (papa bear from Hyung Joon) has resigned as coach of MBCGame. (Source)

- Coach Lee (from MBCGame) has started a SC2 team called "Team SCV Life". (Source)

- Coach Cho has resigned as coach of Oz. (Source)

- Coach Cho (different one) has resigned as coach of CJ. (Source)

- eSTRO is disbanded, and control over the team has been given to KeSPA to be sold off. If a buyer can't be found by October, it will likely be disbanded for good. (Source)

- Six players from the Woongjin Stars team have left including Daezang, Ganzi, Special, MVP, Guemchi, and Kwanro. Kwanro has joined SKT1, while the rest seem to have retired. (Source)

- KeSPA finally caved in to Gretech, and agreed to pay whatever they wanted to get rights to run another Proleague. Due to arguments over time slots on television, and KeSPA's unwillingness to allow the new GomTV GSL to take priority, Gretech refuses to give rights to KeSPA for any reason. KeSPA plans to run the next season of proleague anyway, regardless of legality. Legal action is expected. (Source)

- NaDa has left WeMade FOX and switched to SC2. Several team offers have been made, but he has not accepted any so far. (Source)

- JulyZerg has left STX in favor of joining the new SC2 team, "STARTALE". A few of his replays have already made their way around the net. (Source)

There is an unconfirmed rumor that CJ is also trying to close it's doors, but there isn't enough info on it yet. It looks like this may be the end for Brood War, unless Gretech decides to revive it.

MLG rules released (55 comments)
Posted by vedic @ 18:05 CDT, 3 August 2010 - iMsg
MLG has picked up SC2, and the rules have been released. Take a look:

Equipment
1. Players must bring their own mouse, keyboard, headsets, and mouse pad.
2. Headsets must utilize a standard 3.5mm stereo headset jack with a separate 3.5mm microphone jack. Players may not use USB headsets.
3. Mice and keyboards must utilize standard USB interfaces. Players may not use PS2 interface equipment.

4. All Players must submit their mouse, keyboard, and headset driver requirements by 11:59 PM ET on Monday, August 23rd. No drivers, that have not been previously submitted, will be installed at the Raleigh Competition.
5. All Player equipment is subject to approval.
6. Players may not use 3rd party Add-ons.
7. Players may not change the Computer/Monitor sound and video settings.
8. All User Interface setups will be confined to the Blizzard default options.

9. All interface changes must be supervised by a StarCraft 2 Referee or the StarCraft 2 Tournament Director.

General Rules
1. The latest official Patch version will be used throughout the Event.
2. Players may not appear on a Station with sponsor insignia that is not approved by MLG or conflicts with MLG sponsors. Players and Coaches may be asked to wear MLG apparel for all Matches.
3. In the case of a Computer/Monitor malfunction, the Game will be restarted from the beginning.
4. No Warm-Up Games may be played outside of scheduled Warm-Up periods.
5. During scheduled Warm-Up periods the winner can stay, but the loser must get up.
6. During scheduled Warm-Up periods, Players who haven’t been eliminated from the Event have priority over other Players regarding the use of open Stations.
7. Players who break General Rules #4-6 may be given a Foul (See Pro Circuit Conduct Rules).
8. If a Game is started without the approval of a Referee it will be restarted. If a Player fails to report to their Station within 5 minutes of the announcement, they will Forfeit the 1st Game. 10 minutes after the announcement, a Player will Forfeit their Match. If both Players Forfeit their Match, the higher seeded Player will win the Match.
9. Players may be disqualified if they leave their Station without their Referee’s permission, or are otherwise unable to play. Referees may set a time limit for a Player who has requested that they be allowed to leave their Station, however, Referees may also deny a Player’s request to leave their Station. Players may be disqualified if they haven’t returned by the end of the Referee’s set time limit.
10. In order to dispute Game results, Players must notify their Referee that they would like to Protest the Game. In order to dispute Match results, Players must notify their Referee that they would like to Protest the Match. Players must notify their Referee of their intent to Protest a Game before a new Game has begun. Players must notify their Referee of their intent to Protest a Match before the Match’s Score Sheet has been submitted to the Tournament Director.

They had even worse rules for Halo, and I'm sure they'd be pushing them here, if it wasn't for Blizzard. At least SC2 has a large enough community behind it to fight this kind of stupidity, but consider how powerless the Quake community would be.

Blizzard teams up with GomTV (56 comments)
Posted by vedic @ 00:26 CDT, 27 May 2010 - iMsg
Today, Blizzard announced an exclusive rights deal with GomTV for all Blizzard products. This means that all major professional leagues that have licensed rights via KeSPA can no longer operate legally. However, Blizzard is allowing for these leagues to continue using the rights until the end of the ProLeague season in August.

Blizzard had been in negotiations with KeSPA for many years, but just recently announced that they would be ending the negotiations and moving forward. KeSPA originally "licensed" the rights for broadcasting Starcraft events in Korea to OGN/MBC, despite not actually having the rights. Now, OGN/MBC will be forced to make a deal for licensing rights through GomTV.

SC2 so far... (163 comments)
Posted by vedic @ 23:00 CST, 20 February 2010 - iMsg
For those of you who aren't lucky enough to be in beta yet, here's my view of the beta so far:

- The naming system is great. You get a main name, that can be anything, and an identifier name (that isn't displayed) which can be used to verify an identity, or for adding to friends lists.

- Graphics are absolutely stunning at highest detail, and the requirements for lowest settings are absurdly low. Some animations/graphics aren't done yet. Many units (especially zerg) still suffer from visibility issues, and this is exponentially worse in mirror matchups. This also makes it so streams need to be much better quality in order to see what is going on.

- Sound/music is true to the original, but with a new twist. Not a fan of the female voice for the Zerg announcer, but there are still some sounds that need work, and there's no way to know how much is final.

- Ladder/placement/matchmaking system works very well. Actual elo system with bronze/copper/silver/gold/platinum/pro divisions! Pro division and tournament support are not in beta yet.

- Replays have nearly full FP support. You don't see the actual mouse positions, but you see the screen move to where it is in real time, and you see all unit selection/mouse clicks. Additionally, there are now about a dozen overlays you can turn on that show all sorts of info like unit count, APM, how the player has invested in tech/econ/army, resources, etc.. All of this, and replays are NO bigger than standard SC replays!

- Gameplay is impressively balanced. When it first came out, there were a LOT of complaints, but now that there are working builds, almost every "X IS OP" cry is gone. There are a few units that could use improvement, but there isn't anything that is really overpowered right now. It's actually impressive how balanced this is for a beta. The game itself feels very much like SC, but somewhat different. Overall, the speed of the game feels 25-50% faster than SC. =X

- The novice league is played at Fast gameplay speed (instead of fastest) and you can only play on novice maps. Novice maps are identical to regular maps (almost every map has a regular and novice version), but the chokepoint to your natural expansion has a 2000HP rock in front of it. No rushing, no scouting. Works VERY well.

- Netcode seems solid, but beta is split between regions, so we can't test how it holds up internationally. Hoping that changes soon, as it would be extremely gay if it stays this way.

- Macro mechanics have easily made up for MBS/automine, and it might even be a little HARDER to macro now. D=

All in all, SC2 beta is amazingly good. Invites are still going out randomly in each phase, so it's not too late to sign up. Expect SC2 to kill SC and WC3.

TL baking contest (26 comments)
Posted by vedic @ 11:09 CDT, 20 June 2009 - iMsg
The Team Liquid Starcraft baking contest has just come to a close. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place each receive 2 SC2 beta keys, with more than 60 entries out to get them. Prizes were updated at the last minute, and 4th through 10th will each receive 1 beta key during the second wave of beta invites, coming out later.

Final standing:
1st - Vincze01 (hatchery cake)
2nd - Vedic & Wife (marine cake)
3rd - DoomFish & Girlfriend (kerrigan cake)
4th - Pape (baneling cake)
5th - Wadis (reaver cake)
6th - Kalectotite (HQ cakes)
7th - piesamazing (zealot cake)
8th - Airen & Tox (drone cake)
9th - Musashi (ultralisk & marine cake)
10th - Coltrane & friends (zerg base cake)

I'm somewhat disappointed that we didn't take first, but Vincze's cake got hyped a ton on digg/reddit/etc. We'll be prepared if another contest like this ever pops up. Even still, I scored 2 beta keys! My second beta key is going to KeKs for all the great coverage/bets he has been posting every week. Keep up the great work. <3

Here are all the cakes in the contest:

You need a battle.net account with at least 1 game registered to it in order to opt-in, so don't try to just sign up for a ton of battle.net accounts in order to get a better chance. I really wish I didn't register all my games at once. =(

Anonymous vs the economy (66 comments)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOsFqmRUEy0

Hello world, we are Anonymous.

We are about to change the world as you know it with a massive and global economic meltdown.

Anonymous has decided that on the 16th of October 2008 Anonymous will be visiting their banks to withdraw all their money, in order to start an Asset-liability mismatch. Only a few thousands of simultaneous withdraws is enough to start a chain reaction that will end with an economic meltdown.

We will be writing history, we will be the gravediggers of our civilizations that have for long betrayed the global economy.

We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us.

Anyone think it'll have an impact?

Since a lot of the talk about QL is up in the air, and many are claiming "IT'S IN BETA" or "YOU'RE JUST SPECULATING", I have compiled a set of graphs which show unbiased information on just how well Quake Live has been received by the masses, and how it stacks up to both released and unreleased games. This shows nothing about current players or community activity, and it's not 100% accurate - but it's evenly inaccurate across the board.

Comparison of quakelive.com/idsoftware.com/esreality.com unique visitors

Comparison of quakelive.com/idsoftware.com/battlefield-heroes.com unique visitors

Comparison of search volume for "Quake 4", "Quake Live", "Starcraft 2", and "Battlefield Heroes"

Or, if you prefer, stacked against searches for Counter Strike

Comparison of idsoftware.com/counter-strike.net/battlefield-heroes.com unique visitors

Comparison of id IP site unique visitors

Once more, but with counter-strike.net as well

Comparison of search volume for all quake titles

I had to avoid using things like "Diablo 3", "World Of Warcraft", or blizzard.com, as they crushed the other graph lines with industrial might. Due to the announcement times of QL/battlefield, and the nature of the intended information from the graphs, you may wish to look at 2007 instead of 2008, or all years. Also note that the Quake Live beta is played through idsoftware.com, not quakelive.com, and that any information regarding visitors to idsoftware.com is likely influenced by beta testers. Search results were displayed using the most popular formation of a term ("quake 3" instead of "quake3"), and combining results from the other forms of the terms (like so) was difficult to fit as each graph can only do about 5 terms. With those omitted results, the scales are tipped heavily against id.

If you're waiting on getting into some other game, or just wondering if QL is worth waiting for, perhaps this can give you at least some idea of how QL is going to do.

It is with deep regret to announce that the GameRail network has been discontinued at this time. Thank you to the gamers who have participated in the GameRail trial and support of its development as we worked to solve the issues of latency and network quality and their impact on gaming. We believe that latency and network quality will continue to affect the gaming experience and while we are still believers in the GameRail concept, the market does not appear to be ready to support a standalone network for gaming at this time.

GameRail Team

Not surprised.

Went out and bought a 9600 GT and a 550 watt power supply. It's hard trying to decide what to unleash it on first.

Still having frame problems in OpenGL games on Vista, though. =/

Carmack must be too busy with QL to be competing in this one.

I half expected the tales of channels that were dedicated to nothing but starcraft to be exaggerated. I've been streaming ongamenet live all day...

The rumors were true. D=

Amazing. I can't believe I'm just now getting to watch/play it. A remake on a more modern engine would do it so much justice.

Accel specifics (64 comments)

I don't use accel, but I'm looking at how to accurately measure how it would work out. If you have a value of .1 accel, how/when is it applied? (Per pixel?) Is the value you select the percent of your sensitivity, or some other variation? (sens * accel/p/p?)
