Event: GSL'10

Today, GomTV announced a new world-wide tournament for Starcraft 2 - The Global Starcraft II League (GSL). The GSL will take place each month, with a prize pool of 200,000,000 KRW (about $170,000). Winners of the monthly tournaments will be seeded for main tournaments. These events will be broadcast 5 days per week, unlike MSL/OSL that usually only show 1-2 times per week.

I've seen it, and I know how hard it fails compared to BW, but my point was more towards the balance of the game, and actually fixing things that the community want (to some degree) - bnet2.0 Is a heap of shit, but i read something about activision having a say in that, which might explain why.

There's also the fact content is extremely restricted. For example, words you can't have in your map... not only are you not allowed to have a restricted word as the name, you can't have a restricted word IN THE CODE. God's Garden, a classic bw map, has to be named euphemistically, because God is an offensive word. This is to protect blizz from selling offensive content... you can see the whole custom map system is ultimately set up with the goal of a 'map marketplace' where blizzard skims off the sales... it's not good for users and it's not good for the platform as a whole.

The "lan edition" for tournaments has been rumored, repeatedly, and it would make sense, but

A) Every time info about it supposedly comes out the source has turned out to be either BS or misunderstood
B) How big do you have to be before blizzard will give you a lan edition? I went to a beta sc2 lan... there were horrible latency issues. These may have been bnet's fault, they may have been the lan center's, I don't know, but halfway through bnet went down and we all just sat around playing bw and single player games. There are all kinds of issues with running small lans without any lanning.

There are also problems with the interface I'm not gonna go into, for example being unable to name your lobby.

There are good things about bnet, for example the matchmaking is amazingly good, but on the whole it's a big thumbs down.

Why are you blaming battle.net for shitty internet? It won't run on a decade old PC, so why would it run well at decade old internet speeds? Latency issues should be taken up with your ISP, or your wallet - not with Blizzard.

Starcraft 2 is rated T, for teen. They can't have offensive/stolen content, and it's to be expected. Publishing issues are not a problem, as you can still access maps that aren't in the top 50 - contrary to what that post would have you believe.

Your problem with the interface is personal - not a real problem.

A lot of people had similar but more valid complaints during the WON -> Steam transition about the new difficulties Steam was imposing on LAN play, tournament directors and cybercafes. It was a bigger concern then because bandwith, infrastructure and overall connectivity was not at the level it is today, so it was a legitimate issue. Home networks were not up to snuff either with some machines not even connected to the internet, especially during residential LAN parties. The notion that you absolutely needed an internet connection at that time was an actual burden.

Nowadays we got 3G/4G/86G and WiFi and WiMAX and fiber optics and infrastructure up the ass, so getting a machine onto the internet is trivial. I thought it was stupid to exclude LAN support in SC2 just based on potential latency concerns and simply to have one less detail for tournament directors to consider, but it's a lot harder for me to make a stink about it this time around.

That said, I'd like LAN support just to streamline tournaments and nerd parties in my basement. But I don't feel particularly deprived of anything.

Yes, because it was a new title, and tournaments don't buy quality games, but the newest hype. Only lasted for a while, and then some marginal tournaments with problems for paying the players and eventually going bankrupt continued supporting that shitty game. It still was ridiculously low prizemoney if you wanted to make a living out of it and call yourself a so called "professional gamer". It was still a joke.

It doesn't matter if the game was decent after two years, the thing is, it has to be ready to play at a professional level since day 1, otherwise you are fucked.

ql is rather ready for this but miss the first point.
Just think what a quake with id tech 5 and with a good beta test could become adding all the matchmaking , profile feature , stats etc from quakelive.

Guys it's about game popularity . Quake will never reach this level because it's not a hugley popular game like sc2, which will probably sell in excess of 10 million copies. It's also the fact that the game is popular in all corners of the world, so for tournament organizers this is the perfect game to support. Both ESL and MLG and probably WCG (next year) is supporting the game. The thing that saves quake is the fact that it's a very competative game that is also fun to watch, if that wasn't the case we wouldn't see any money at all for quake tournaments.

All of SC2's success and popularity atm can be completely attributed to it being successor to SC, and what happened to SC1 in Korea was just pure luck from a developer point of view since Blizzard couldnt even dream of such e-sports when they made SC1. SC2 as a _game_ doesnt deserve such money, but its completely understandable as a phenomenon. There's so much hype involved it is impossible for it to fail in the early stages. Only time will tell if the actual game can live up to the success of Brood War.

Time doesn't need to tell - if you know about SC at all, you'd know that SC2 is nearly as good as SCBW multiplayer, and the singleplayer is infinitely better. SC took years (and an expansion) to balance out, and SC2 is almost equal to it while only being released for a week.

It's global in that anyone can join - but it will all still take place in Korea, and it will all be LAN. It does seem a bit odd that they'd add the "global" tag just for making it open, but we'll probably have a better understanding when there is an English press release.

And clearly the blame for all of this is the "skill" that quake requires as opposed to masses of other dumbed down games.

I love skill-based FPS's as much as the next guy, but if warsow, cpma, and the quake series are any indication, complex games will never have popular appeal, anymore.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. It's really a choice between dumbing down this game or wide-scale popularity.

I have never played starcraft or starcraft II, but clearly there is something that blizzard is doing differently if starcraft II is a complex game yet appealing to new players.

Something that quake ISNT doing.

Starcraft is certainly not easier than quake.

the most interesting point about that I have recently read is this:

In Starcraft even if your opponent is much better the game still lets you build up for some time, doing your thing. And then you opponent moves in, destroy you and the game is over.
But in Quake you don't get half a minute of not being destroyed by a better opponent. Hence the skill gap becomes so much more obvious.

also in quake, you are expected to let yourself get raped for 10 minutes without quitting, and forfeiting is considered lame behaviour.

if in bw/sc2 a rape is incoming. you just quit and the opponent is happy

10 minute timed game vs a game that could go on arbitrarily long if one player decides to deny defeat. This has obviously created a completely different culture around quitting (it's BM to draw a game out after you've lost, it's ragequitting if you don't let the game run to it's conclusion).

Most pro players make $60,000+ just being on a pro team already. Flash makes around $300,000/year before tournament winnings. Since these are monthly tournaments, it would be a huge salary increase from before. =P

B-Team members like Idra are called pro-gamers already, and they get paid nothing or very little (<500$/month). They only get to use a dorm for free with up to 10 other people. Most A-Team members earn between 10.000-20.000 a year. Very few reach 60.000+

So compared to german standards, the average pro-gamer in korea has a lower standard of living than a unemployed person living of unemployment aid (you get your own flat+additional costs paid + ~600$ month for food, clothing...)

What happens when you are new at Quake? you get utterly freaking DESTROYED.. over and over again.. where is the fun in that?

Quake-live was an idea I thought could be successful, make a newbie friendly game, make it free and off you go.. but to be honest it was very delayed, badly implemented, no one knows about it, etc, etc..

Look at the prize money and tournaments that used to be in Quake3 and Quake4.. utterly ridiculous.. you had a viewing audience of a few thousand people.. seriously.. a few thousand.. and sponsors were paying 50,000 dollars +++ toward prize pool.. that math doesn;t work out and the sponsors got wise and realised they were sinking funds into what was essentially a noreturns market

Look at starcraft.. it naturally took off itself, through its own inertia in S Korea.. now it is utterly massive down there... with starcraft 2 there is a faint glimmer that it could take off in europe or US or perhaps another country like S korea..

Nothing is forced, no stupid greedy brainless organisation setting up SC2CPL5000 or any of that rubbish.. just intelligent, steady marketing, backed by figures in S Korea.. and a decent grassroots tournament structure growing in Europe and America (weekend cups etc)

I've always loved quake, but we're flogging a dead horse here, let it go.

great for esports (theoretically)

game companys need to realize that there is a lot of money in progaming (theoretically). a yearly prize pool of $500,000 for pro tournaments is a reasonable investment in community building and customer retention, which results in higher revenues for the game companies and their shareholders.

it's great for gamers too (theoretically), as increased attention towards competitive gaming results in better support and higher quality products (better, more skillful games). just imagine someone pumping large sums of prize money into the fps/quake community.

of course it's not easy to profitably sustain an economy such as this, but it's a good idea (theoretically)
