You misspelt Jonathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel (it's not Wendle). It's spelt just fine on the photos simonb supplied... but it's spelt wrong in the video.

yes, that was spotted just AFTER i spent 8 hours rendering the films & 7 hours uploading them. I actually copied the spelling from a website which got it wrong :/ i edited the image by hand to fix the spelling.

I was gonna fix it but I really have no time the rest of this week to fix it... so it had to go live this evening regardless. Annoying isnt it :p

Nah t4 was campfest and it was all controling ra, unlike pro-t4 thats is more tactical and quick map (u can spawrape ur opponent quite satisfiying =}) but ok maybe only my opinion.

Fatality was really hard to understand. I think, my face had the same expressions than Carmac's ... like "WTF IS HE SAYING???" ;)

I especially liked the analysis of zero4, where he talks about the current aiming situation in Q3. People hit too much and the maps are too old, we need fresh ones or maybe tone down the weapons strengths a bit.

And then, I want to be at such events, too!!!!! :)

Honestly, I pointed out the same like you ("people hit too much") and I suggested the same ("we need fresh ones [maps that is]"). But that was just what zero4 already said, so we both agree with it, it seems.

Then, to tone down the weapons a bit, maybe rail to 75, was just an idea of me that comes to my mind every evening I play and get raped with 3 or 4 or 5 or sometimes even 8 slugs in a row...
Of course, people would still hit the same but it wouldn't be that effective anymore because the damage is less. So, in my little nice world, the people would use different weapons and strategies.

yes the agressive style won't be any use then. all you will be able to do is time at the 1/10 of sec the items, crouch at a corner and w8 for a rl combo or shaft.

weapons are ok as is, only new maps are needed.

The 'problem' of timing is, that BOTH teams try to do it and of course start to fight for it. If not for the armors, then for the powerups for sure.

But ok, I admit that I didn't test the lower damage version, and in theory it can't be discussed adequately.

Very good movie =) I do think that someone that speaks proper, better understandable and less stuttering english would probably be a better interviewer, you did good CarMac but erm someone like Thorin would have had a better voice/english for it.

That was a very well made movie simonb, I enjoyed it from start to finish. By far prozac was the best interview. He comes across as an easy going guy that just likes to have fun. I think fatal1ty & CaRmac just had a hard time understanding each other, but was good for the most part.

ZeRo4 was very nervous telling by his body language, but did a good job answering the questions. I really liked how in game footage was mixed with the live reactions of the players. Over all, it is a great movie that every e-sports fan should watch.

Interesting watch, enjoyed it - it would definitely be good to see a regular production in tune with big gaming events.

A few points, Fatal1ty should've been cut way earlier - he was boring. Also, some follow up q's could've easily been asked rather than the simple ask q, get answer technique that seems to have been adopted from the online approach. aNouC's brief iview should've been longer, a non-gamer may have been confused as to whether she was even there to play or to spectate. Also to push esports forward it would be wise to lay a lot of emphasis on the female side.

I think you if you're trying to press esports onto potential sponsors as well as non-gamers you've got to put more thought into glorifying it.

Well... Not the best gaming video/interview/... out there but worth the download.

Though i have some complains;

CarMac's questions where... hm.. how do i put it? Idiotic? Unprofessional? I mean how can you say to someone directly, you're going to lose or what... You guys should download some Gamer.tv shows and see how an interview is done and what words to use. And when inteviewing you hardly ever looked into the person's eyes. And i suggest to check for everything you want to ask first (not fatal1ty.com, fatal1ty .inc - that's a huge difference)

The music is too loud when interviews are happening. It's hard enough to try to understand CarMac's english in silence.

Some narratoring (i belive this is the right expression) would be great since (if you haven't closely folowed ESCW) you hardly understand what is happening. Who is Fatal1ty? What is he playing? Thing like this should be explained. This would be great, since we don't found out absolutely nothing worthless in this video. Oh, sorry, we found out that fatal1ty will lose on this year's CPL, Prozac did first plasma climb on T4 and zero4 owns a ball mouse wich is not on USB.
I mean who won, wich was Prozac, was he competing, wich was zero4,...

Well, let's see the "mission objectives" that the author chose to include when posting this news article:

So, hell yeah! If this is a "hey q3 people, check it out!" video then it's one thing. If you expect, and want, this video to be released to the general public (or just gaming public?) then you do have to add more detail.

A simple example to illustrate my point: when a (completely non-gaming) friend of mine sees me playing he only emits "wow" whenever I get those really lame head-on couldn't miss rail shots.

Whenever you hit a pixel rail shot, he doesn't get it. Perform the rail to bridge and vice-versa, he doesn't think its that hot. Perfect pg climb to RA on ztn, so? Since he doesn't play the game he just doesn't see those feats.

That means you do need to cut "technicalities" out. Reminds me of those "NBA: We love this game!" [produced by NBA] spots that used to run in local (Portuguese) TV. They included some action, but mostly showed players making some funny facial expressions, a group dancing, a guy falling on the specs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel that's what the parent author meant: you need to put a different stance to a film for it to be public-viewable.

Well I can't really blame Carmac or simonb. Don't forget that this is there first big interview/video about gaming / event. They will learn along the way as the do more interviews.

I guess this was Carmac's first video interview. If I was him I would be nervous like hell. Most ppl can't really stand to have an camera pointing all the time at them while they talk.

And about Carmac's english, I think it is extremely good considering it is not his native-language. Maybe he should had prepared the questions better, but that is one thing Carmac has learned now I guess, and will do that better with his next video interview.

Overall I think this is a very nice video of the ESWC tournament. Prozac seems to be a very nice person, loved the part where he let the world show he is a fan of britney :)

I just wanted to inform you that there is a microsoft mouse shaped that way in laser, I saw this player on a lan for maybe 3-4 years ago use it, and later on he broke it and bought another mouse. You should mail microsoft or something, maybe they will make a new one special for you(:

It can very easy be converted into an optical mouse. Remove evrything from the mouse, implant (let say) MX500 laser and chips, modify a little so it sets in and that should be it.

doh. i've used the (admittedly, wrong) term hz just for convenience after seeing many people here talking about scanning rates of 1500-2000 images/sec for old mice. poll rate is how many times the mouse input is read per second, even 500 hz if you use linux and a patch by normalperson ;)

mouse shape: ok, if for you that mouse is not close enough to the very first mouse i've used (minus the wheel), who knows what zero4 thinks about it...

(btw, why do so many people wonder about him playing with a ball mouse if he likes it ? as if opticals improve your game instantly)

I think Team9-XeQtR was a lot more nervous. Overall a nice movie but it was really hard to understand the FAT interview. But at least the questions were not longer than the answers like in the mvapa productions of the summer cpl.

Nice movie, indeed, but if you'd like some input (constructive critisism), then here goes;

I agree with #109 on the narrator issue; To manage to sell the idea of esports to non gamers and possible sponsors then more information should be given by a narrator.

I am sure you all have a lot of material suitable for such information, like when you presented the eswc area and so on. Showing people, events and scenery while explaining a bit more about the eswc and the people talking, who they are and what they do will probably make the whole thing more interesting for most people.

Also, what happened to GitzZz? Was he too busy for interviews? I mean, interviewing the actual winner of the eswc ut2k3 competition feels pretty important in a movie like this.

Other then that, I think Carmac's english is excellent (for a polish guy that is :P hehe, nah, kidding), he speaks clear and with a nice neurtal accent.
Last time i spoke with a polish dude was when I was in the UN in southern lebanon.
All he could say was "you...me....beautiful friends" and he lay a huge bear-like hand over my shoulder and hugged me, I felt like a squashed chinchilla....man was i scared......! :P

Anyway, it was well wourth the download, very entertaining and really interesting to see actual movie shots from the eswc event, more more.....M O R E !!11 =)

Think the problem in the fat interview is related to accustic issues. (they were in a stairway of some kind with painted concrete walls all over which makes the sound bounche all over the place).
Should probably be something to consider next time, but I am sure that finding a quiet spot to chat at eswc could prove to be difficult.

The film has the potential to appeal to both hardcore gamers interested in the competitive scene as well as more casual players and those with little knowledge of gaming at all. In terms of pleasing the former group the production is a moderate success, the interviews are fairly good and present a diverse range of questions and personalities and the in-game footage is really excellent, particularly Sunman's quadruple deagle rampage on de_train and zero4's frags on dm6. Some more ut2003 action would have been welcome though. The Q&A with the players could have perhaps been better if Carmac was seated opposite the interviewee or out of shot (even though he's damn sexy for a 40 year old), as having the two participants sit alongside one another looked awkward and made eye-contact more difficult. Also, it's no coincidence that many here have stated that they found the zero4 interview the most interesting - it had much more gaming related content and the player's answers regarding T4 strategy and the future of Quake 3 were quite astute. A criticism would have to be the lack of interviews with the event's winners.

As far as enlightening those unfamiliar with this area of gaming, i'd say it was fairly unsuccessful. Good points would be the interesting characters used in the interviews, the footage of the setting and players celebrating. However the lack of explanatory information regarding the games themselves, the participants and even those interviewed render the film confusing to those with little knowledge of competitive gaming. As others have pointed out in this thread, a narrator could have been used to convey these details in a concise manner. Needless to say the technicalities of plasma climbing and map control will probably be lost on this type of audience too when they hear them discussed by Prozac.

Overall, i think a clearer goal regarding precisely what you wish to achieve with such a production would lead to a less compromised, more potent end result.

yeh, i agree with the points - the target audience was specifically gamers who are active in the community.. but as I spent more time with it i decided to also make it a film to present to potential sponsors of gaming. So really i never had any plans to make this film understandable for non-gamers. Thats kinda what I did for my last film "Modern Day Gamer"... If people are interested in hearing talk about specific tactics & map tips & tricks they should wait for the additional stuff im gonna do with 4K :))

i think i should make clear that i didnt attend the eswc to make this film - im actually amazed i had enough footage for it cos my main objective when i was there was to make a documentary about 4kings.CS - which I did. But i havent edited that yet.

So i used all the footage i didnt wanna use in that film for this :) still took bloody ages.

Yeah i hope i didn't sound too harsh there, i should really add that as a gamer i thoroughly enjoyed it and will look forward to anything similar in the future, we definitely need more of this kind of thing.

What I liked in this movie were the questions asked by Carmac. not your 'standard + boring interview' questions but something different. Something that really got the players talking about something substancial.

I dont wanna bash ODB here but oDb's questions are boring and the answers are rather predictable and you dont care about what the players are gonna tell you then anyway. This movie really got me waiting for a players answer.

Btw, I never knew b that Zero4 was such a calm and intelligent guy. He was thinking before he was talking and resulted in some decent answers.

Also, the mix of ingame action and interviews was nicely done.

I could point out some flaws but I couldn't have done it better myself so I'll leave that to the rest of you.

Quake3 weapon arsenal is by far the best. Combined with a perfect engine,good visual settings and good netcode makes it a very pleasant experience and there is not much else but your own eye-hand coordination that decides wether you hit or not. Every weapon is usable and you will always inflict damage on your opponent which makes the game fast paced. Duel map control is mostly about positioning and getting mega health. Tdm is a war of attrition, whoever controls the rail and can do free damage or whoever controls the red armor have a big advantage.

Railgun is the only exception to the "i kill you but you did damage to me with whatever weapon you had" philosophy.
If you use plasma or shaft you are guaranteed to get damage done to you before you manage to kill your opponent. All weapons can in most situations do damage to your opponent no matter how much stronger weapon he has.
ID have tried to balance this by making different weapons which have lesser range make more damage.
Railgun does 80 damage per second which is far from the top damage/sec. Plasma does 200 and shaft is not far behind.

Ping or low fps is no longer a factor and the things that are left is aim and taking the strongest route collecting the best items while stopping your opponent from doing the same.
Its about learning and mastering every situation and knowing without having to think what you need to do. Theres pretty much a set amount of situations that you need to learn and know any of the correct answers to on any given map. The way the maps are being played today is a product of a few great minds who invented new tactics and hours and hours of trial and error by the rest.

The older the game gets the lesser room there is for the ones who are good tacticians to play their own way. If you do something new and win a tournament everyone else will do like you.

I play vQ3 pretty much every day on pubs; I'm no good but I've played for a couple of years and I love it. I loved this film: it's people I read, read about and sometimes get whupped by and there they are, in all their inadequate, stumbling, play-so-much-better-than-me glory. I'm a fan; I've tried and I can't play well enough to be competitive but I can see why the great are good. I'm a punter here and it's just great to see the folks behind the demos and the comments. If you want to appeal to the casual gamer, you've succeeded; after watching, I wish I'd gone to spectate. I could have afforded it and if they run another I'll go. The film is a great advert as far as I'm concerned.

BTW, everyone slagging off Carmac's English should take a big FO pill; I teach this stuff and admire his accentless, idiomatic fluency. It's not his fault if Americans scuff their shoes, sratch their heads and go "awwwwwwwwwwww, shucks; now yer askin somefinn".

I haven't actually downloaded it yet, but as far as I understand, the main track is Filmpalast - Istanbul, Capoeria Twins remix. At least, that's what I sent to simonb and he said he was using a lot in the movie.

i think carmac's not bad.
the mfavp ones, on the cpl event, were worse. the guy, scott smith, kept on asking qns that were longer than the replies he got frm the interviewees. Especially frustating was when he asked qns that had 2 parts... In the end, players mostly ended up answering the 2nd part, and I think he didn't bother to ask the 1st part again.

nah i say keep carmac in there, hes great fun. but give him a sidekick =P

Interviews were ackward, everyone was trying to look their best but failing horribly at it only proZac passed! But then again the questions were solid and the video graphics and editing were WAY better then the odb video's.

The job of interviewer was carried out deficiently. There are some rules you could to follow to try improving. As far as my personal experience about interviews goes:

1) No interviewing people in akward settings, as in 'on the stairs somewhere'. Show some respect for the speaker, your audience and yourself.

2) No stuttering, no nervous body language. Only experience helps here.

3) No blatant use of notes to lookup questions. Look the interviewee in the eye at all times if possible. Glancing down at some papers while the interviewee is looking at you is just unacceptable.

4) Improvisation, two way communication, where the interviewer reacts to the speaker's replies and drives the conversation accordingly. Without this type of fluidity the interview becomes a questionnaire. You could do this via e-mail!

Despite these issues i have to say zero4's interview was quite good, thanks to hill's incisive and interesting comments.

All in all respect for the video, its obvious effort was put in.

Hats off to the staff that put this cool video together and to
all the people who made appearances.

The editing and choice of background music was good. I can
only imagine the whole team producing better videos for
future events. You guys rock!

Watching demos of great gamers is one thing, but to actually
see them on video and hear them talking about gaming is
even cooler. I think that's what many gamers want to see.
We need more videos like this! Especially for the best gamers,
you guys should make more appearances and promote
yourselves.

The goal of a production like this is to *promote* e-sports
and make this whole e-sports thing grow and reach a bigger
market. As such, the interviewers and the people being
interviewed should always keep in mind that the audience
isn't limited to hardcore gamers. Although I might know who
Fatality is, a person who is just getting into gaming might
not. Keep these people in mind if you really want to create
a kick-ass production and gain new fans.

Another thing that should be remembered is that not
everyone's native language is English. This is especially
important for the professional gamers from English speaking
countries who might have a tendency to speak too fast or
not so clearly.

And to accomodate the professional gamers from non-English
speaking countries, you might want to think about asking
some bilingual people to volunteer as translators. That way,
the audience can hear from all the gamers, even if he or she
isn't comfortable using English, especially in front of a camera.

CarMac does a great job in this video. I suggest you practice
your interviewing skills by watching how reporters interview
traditional athletes on TV. If you keep this up, you'll become
the "face" of E-Sports.
