But Romero's actual career after being fired from id was... using their brand to sell his stuff. That's the only thing in his CV - working for id Software in the early 90s. That's how he got investors to fund his broken game. That's how he sells books, gets on every podcast, tours game conventions, gets into documentaries and every now and then brings Tom Hall and Adrian Carmack to beg for money on Kickstarter. Literally all he does is ride on id Software's legend.

The only thing he's made in the last 20 years that I heard of was... a set of Doom Levels (which I actually plan to get one day, with the Buckethead sountrack!)

I love Romero's character and charisma, but sadly, you are kinda right on riding the nostalgia/id software hype train. However, I do think if you put Romero in a good team for the right game, his creativity and quirkiness might actually benefit the game.

regarding Romero - I imagine he could have been pain to work with, but on other hand I consider him as great designer, lets not forget he was the guy who gave us LG in quake, and elevators in doom :)

Tim - only redeeming quality of him I can think of is design of q2dm1, same with Sync, that guy did some excellent maps but in a long term their project decissions led to sinking quake effectively

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Xbox's new console has not been as well-received as the PS5. From what little I've seen/read, it looks like PS5 has better specs and better games. The new Halo game, which would be a flagship title for Xbox, was delayed and other games don't look as interesting as those launching on PS5.

So it seems to me that MS buying Zenimax is just a way to either keep some games away from PS5, or maybe Sony pay a premium to get some of the games that come from Zenimax's various studios.

I've heard people predict similar things but I also think it might be an investment into the future of gaming being tied to remote hardware. In the end that goes down to what you say here about xbox exclusives but I imagine it is also more profitable to maintain a subscription based system largely in house, at least for some of the flagship titles.

Microsoft is usually a good steward. They get the return and the creative investment goes to the "brands," that they purchased.

Microsoft didn't make Halo. Bungie made Halo but they gave Bungie the clout.

I'm optimistic that maybe the id Software franchise will have even more longevity than I expected. I'm not saying it will have the same success as LoL/Dota/CSGO etcetera.

I think the reality is that Doom 4 was apparently a success (I never bought it) and there is still some life there. I thought after Rage that bankruptcy and irrelevance was eventually in id Software's future.

I'm kind of hopeful that Carmack will somehow bring the team back or at least himself to collab as cityy's tweet in comment #4 highlights. Even Carmack just giving some "input" would be magical as a highly paid and highly sought after "Consultant" ;-)

Honestly this is refreshing news. I hope that the Wikipedia page for the id Software brand will stay "Active" in next century. The id Tech engine I think still has some relevance and can be pushed farther. I know a lot of you guys are not huge believers in the engine but have to assume it hasn't quite hit its irrelevancy point yet.

I just hope that id Software gets some kind of investment or capital from the big guys. I think for sure the priority will be a continuation to Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls stuff and then probably a Doom 5.

If they do give money/resources (i.e. time commitments) to these teams to work on said games:
Elder scrolls will get 55% of it. Fallout and Doom will probably get 20% of that each. Wolfenstein will get 5% of it.

I don't know how much money they will give for a Quake 5. Probably they will continue to feed Quake Champions out of obstinatce and because of SyncError's insistence.

Skill rating, team balancing and match making (read: pickups :)) are already 100% community-driven for years. We'd just be able to integrate some of that stuff officially (instead of hooks and other hacks), fix some bugs / compatibility issues, bring back the Linux port of course, maybe port better renderers from ioquake3, stuff like that.

And of course in my dream world, QL would remain on Steam, but the community would be able to push beta updates for it, and maybe Bethesda would come every few months and push an official one.

Yeah, this essentially is the nail in the coffin for any hopes that we get a port that is outside the Windows 10 and Xbox hierarchy.

Luckily the Steam store allows for the Wine layer that Valve has invested a lot of money in to fork for Linux and SteamOS players.

I'd say after Loki Games dissolved there hasn't been real Linux support at all. TTimo was the sole programmer for porting Doom 3 and Quake IV and he left years ago (he also made the 1.32 patches for Quake 3 after Loki Games's release in 1999).

And he designed the Linux version of Quake Live (before it went Steam exclusive).

I love TTimo, but it's not like he just ported those huge games to Linux in his spare time.

John Carmack was a UNIX guy in the 90s (he had the original Quake running on IRIX and Linux) and he was always big on portability, always saying how good it is to make stuff portable because it can help prevent some bugs. That, and obviously that allowed them to quickly port their games to all the consoles in the world.

Also, QL was ported by LordHavoc (now LadyHavoc). TTimo was around and did Linux stuff later, but he never designed it :) And after those left, Bargle was doing wonders for the Linux port.

It all changed with the Zenimax acquisition. Carmack managed to open source Doom 3 and then it stopped. If not the Zenimax deal, we'd have Q4 and QL source code by now.

So they decided the game is unsustainable, but it's Zenimax property so can't be passed on to the community and moved it to life support (same story with QC 2 years ago), moving everyone else to Rage to start making money for the new corporate daddy (and what pressure that must have been, they cut everything unfinished out, made ending movie play after some random fight in the middle of the game and shipped that crap), so...

This happened way before the Steam release (which you misremember). When Chrome scheduled removing NPAPI support, it was just sponge left to figure something out. This was the "standalone" release which dropped Linux. [2]

Anyways, it wasn't like he could just let someone help him. It's not the id Software we are fans of. Now it's Bethesda, authors of Doom, Quake and Fallout! Working on big brands to be worth billions to Microsoft. No way they will let some enthusiast waste his time on Linux ports of a game that's already $5 on Steam. There can be a 100 TTimos working there, but Bethesda can't allow such wastefulness.

id Software and Bethesda having not the best synergies, I'm of the view that id Software has always demanded to work in a silo and Bethesda has probably never been impressed with whatever work was produced in this silo. It seems like a relationship that was made symbolically but never actually existed on a "real" level.

And I thought Blizzard+Acti was just a way for investors to get exposure to a world class asset. Definitely a win for both in my opion.
