but i don't understand why they are trying to have transatlantic games instead of 2 seperate tournaments. even if somebody likes qc, i don't see why they would tune in to watch high ping vs low ping matches. the us players aren't all living in new york or boston so they will be playing with higher ping when they play on eu server, even with the london server which was setup for this specific tournament.

there's also a chance that the european players will be extremely anal either way about intercontinental games. if they lose on eu server it's netcode, if they lose on na server it's ping disadvantage. that's why they should cancel this tournament and run it as two seperate events.

It was like: 27 minutes of tox jumping around, doing magic things and then running out of ammo, because it's tox... then he attacks vengeur out of boredom, and it's like: he looks down on vengeur, aims the rail at him and... a screen of Nyx on a podium.

Seriously, what the fuck? Is it THIS HARD to show someone dying from their point of view? I've seen this done in the other games (obviously not for the finishing frag), so surely EVEN this shit engine is capable of presenting that to the viewer.

According to an answer in a thread on the QC forum, it is a regression bug for overtime, was fixed some time before and broke again.

This gives you a rough estimation about the code quality and programming ability of the DEV team. They constantly add stuff noone wants or asked for, new skins and useless shit. But when it comes to almost game-breaking bugs, tough luck!

In my opinion they really need to do full rebroadcast or at least upload Vengeur's pov after this historical game.

In the beginning of QPL, they used two spectators to capture 100% of both POVs, and a third controlled by the casters that wasn't recorded.

My PC can run 2 instances of QC at once (I do this every day, never tried 3 but I guess that would work as well) and record both, and my Internet connection can stream 50 QC streams at the same time (assuming 2 Mbps upload).

So obviously the problem isn't the streaming hardware.

The problem is that in QC no one can spectate any match, and even the people employed to stream this shit can't manage adding three spectating clients to a match, because that's how hard it is.

And obviously, there's no demo of either tox's or vengeur's pov, because there are no demos. I mean replays. Console shit shooter needs console shit shooter terminology. Unfortunately, using the proper terminology doesn't help the problem.

I mean, these devs can't even fix the FINAL FRAG situation there, for a FEW YEARS.

You just see the rocket flying.... BAM, it shows you the champion screen? It is literally popping out instantly, so you can't understand what is happened.
This stuff can be fixed within a few hours, if you have all the sources.

It even showed the wrong champion screen when the last POV player lost. ROFL

No, it always shows the winner's champion, and that part worked each time.

The problem was the stream overlay on the bottom - not only did they sometimes forget to change that overlay when switching the spectated player (wouldn't happen if the game had customizable HUD), that overlay stayed on when the winner's champion was there on the podium, even if the overlay was showing losing player's name if we were spectating him before (wouldn't happen if the game had customizable HUD).

That caught me by surprise several times.

And the desync between spectator pov switches and overlay switches confused me more times than I can count.

It's not the fault of ESL/production crew. They have no way to hook into the game to sync the overlay to what's actually happening (short of using Cheat Engine or something, maybe). It's the fault of the game being so esports-ready.

Man, Rapha losing to Killsen was SO deserved after those vpn shenanigans! Rapha and his usual mind tricks, he wanted to clear his head, he got the match stopped, and he still lost.

Congrats to Killsen, that last frag with the stealth approach and the ledge grab to catch Rapha by surprise was 200 IQ.

After being defeated by Cypher, Rapha had to fight Killsen in the loser bracket.

He was still shook, he isn't used to lose, and Killsen beat him easily in the first map.

Rapha wanted time to calm down and clear the head, and started bitching about lag and wanting a different VPN. They stopped the match for him, gave him time to recover and do whatever, and when they resumed Killsen lost his momentum, he didn't look as focused. Luckily he still managed to turn it around and defeat Rapha after a lot of close fights.

Hes one of the GOATs but i agree, he has also blamed stuttering on LAN to do the same, restart pc yada yada.

I guess you can't blame him if the rules/referees allow that. Also you never know when somebody really needs time because of real technical issues and when somebody stretches the privileges...

But overall totally deserved win by k1llsen, insane day, he played 2 intense BO5s and won BO7 in the final back to back.

Remember he played his first match at 6:00 local time / 14:00 CEST, zero Internet flow at his side, and far from peak in Europe - hence, both trans-American and trans-Atlantic pipes having good flow, and not too many people playing on the European servers yet.

Then when he played k1llsen the second time, it was much later on both ends. Everything more clogged up than before. Whether it was on his end, within the USA, in the undersea links, or on the EU server alone - doesn't matter. Fact is, there's many moving parts and all of them were under more load.

Especially if k1llsen asked for the "EU, Central" server (aka Frankfurt), which is hellishly routed and itself rubber-bands under load. I assume this wasn't the case and they used the new London-based "EU, West", but we can't be sure :)

Painting black would only make it shine brighter in infrared. Yes, they're trying some special dark coating, but nothing can make it invisible to the most sensitive instruments on Earth...

They tested coating on some of the earlier ones, with moderate success. This caused the satellites to potentially overheat (darker surfaces absorb more light).
Now they are employing sunshades. Dunno how that is going. But it will never be a complete fix - there will always be some light pollution.

telecoms launching satellites with 3rd party space companies is not an option, it would add an insane overhead to their costs. it would be impossible to compete on price even if they would launch with SpaceX commercial flights.

the only viable competition could come from other space companies launching their own constellations, but there's not even one serious competitor in sight in the space industry at the moment. everyone is 10 years behind at a minimum.

by the time other space companies catch up on launch R&D, it's just too late. SpaceX would iterate and be ahead in satellite hardware and operative costs.. and who knows what technology leap.

I do see the logic in what you're saying, but it seems that some companies want to try anyway, with the likes of Facebook, Amazon, and Samsung showing a strong interest in getting on board.

Whether they will succeed or not is another matter (some other companies have already gone bankrupt in this apparently), but I imagine that eventually it's gonna be more than just SpaceX up there, even if they are the dominant force. In any case, SpaceX's planned 42,000 satellites seems like quite a lot even without competition.

Forget about that. SpaceX is too far ahead. As long as they don't go bankrupt, SpaceX will occupy the market, and any potential remaining market share will not be enough to make an endeavour by a rival company economically feasible.

As far as Bezos and Kuiper is concerned, you must understand that Jeff Bezos is not really that rich. His wealth of so and so many billions is calculated from his shares in Amazon. If he liquidates more than a small fraction of that stock to use in other endeavours, Amazon stock would tank.. which means since Amazon has an incredibly slim profit margin anyway -> bye bye Amazon.
Viewed from another angle, Amazon's all time net profits are around 30 bn, and Bezos' wealth is listed as 150 bn. That does not really make sense, does it?

Good point about Bezos' wealth, but it looks like it is Amazon's project, not his very own. Such a project is no small investment, so I'm sure they wouldn't bother if they expected it not to be profitable in some way. Of course, you could still be right, and they could be wrong.

I must say that overall production of QC pro league is quite good from start to finish (commentators could use some improvements ofc). Especially given how smaller the viewer number is + game development/popularity.

As someone who played Quake competitively in early Q3 days, and now at least still is a spectator, I can say things have changed a whooole lot.

I honestly can't believe we have Esports of this calibre presented to us for free, pretty much all year round. I appreciate it very much and hope the QPL doesn't end any time soon.

I think (at least for spectating) the state QC is in is pretty perfect right now too. The round based BS is gone, it's back to a simple timelimit based format (10 min, which I always preferred over 15 min), BO3 to BO5s. The champion balance is great, the vast majority of the time neither champion pick has a clear advantage - if so, it is because the player uses that particular champion very well.

There are around 5 players who are very competitive with each other and can on any given day win a tournament / final.

Yeah.. it's pretty much Quake heaven right now :)

They tried to make it mainstream, they tried to give it legitimacy, to make it considered as legit as real sports, how many times have they tried to put them in mainstream media channels, always failing spectacularly?

I lost count. The reasons it doesn't work are countless and deserve their own thread alone. E-sports will never generate the kind of following real sports do.

They're too volatile, too unclear, too abstract, too difficult to follow. And a plethora other reasons.

Sure, nerds tend to watch some big esport tournament of their favourite game, but that's it. And sure as hell they'd never pay to watch it, they'd much rather donate those moneys to some rich e-thot, better if "she" used to be a he.

We're NOT lucky it's free to watch. It's free to watch because it's the only way anybody would watch that crap.

And the champions are not balanced. Strogg is quite sensibly the strongest champion right now, and Nyx, Slash, Visor, Sorlag are broken as usual.
The reason there is variety of picks is because you CAN'T pick Strogg more than once, otherwise they would.

And champion unbalance is kept in check by weapon unbalance- champions differences aren't that important when the stupidest point and click weapon does 90 damage on a pixel of your exposed body, the lg melts people, the rockets are nuclear explosions as long as they actually register with the netcode roulette, etc. etc. etc.

The game is broken on multiple aspects, i don't know how that gives a sense of balance.

I have to agree with him that we're lucky to have the competitions that we have.

Sure one can make many complaints about this this and that (and even if everything was balanced to your liking, it might not be to someone else's liking) regarding the game. That's an endless debate... Personally I have many things that I would change even in super-popular games like CS:GO or Dota 2.

But the main point is, I don't have a clue what the numbers are, but I don't feel Quake Champions is making even close to "big money" that would allow for the QPL to exists. So we're very lucky to have that, in that sense.

There are plenty of small FPS games with a decent playerbase that don't necesserally have that.

When the support stops for QC e-sport and we're left with a few online $50 cups every now and then, and that 95% of the currently top players will stop competing, I think we'll miss what we have now. Even if it's definitely not perfect and it could be improved... To me seeing names like Cooller, Rapha, Cypher, K1llsen, Vengeur, Raisy, Dahang, Tox, Av3k, etc... Trying their best to win the title, that's really something I take great enjoyment in following.

So much this... + actually quite a good games out there that are pleasure to watch. I am sure someone at id still loves quake (and keeping the crown as the only arena fps game with bigger tournaments/competition) as I am also sure the player base is not generating any sensible income to even come close to justify the pro league.

Just because Quake isn't mainstream, doesn't mean esports aren't a thing, it's just a pity most of the games aren't real esports (Quake level of skill ceiling and competition you can find in just a handful of games, like CS, SC, DOTA - sure, I know, they all get overshadow by Fortnite producing 13-year-old champions because once you learn the map, the results are random - let's just hope people don't associate esports with that kind of crap)

The Quake being played is great. I too honestly have no idea how the players can perform as well as they do with a game technically as bad. But that does not diminish the quality of the competition & my viewing pleasure.

Cypher gave some hints in the interview, you need a high-end PC [for this piece of crap to run well], a 240 Hz esports monitor and what he didn't mention, of course an ultra-stable fat connection with super low ping. Basically every advantage you can get.

Doesn't Rapha have a GTX 580 from like 10 years ago? I've tried QC just once, and it ran well on my RX 480 then.

What made it unplayable for me personally was a) the terrible, muffled, distant sound b) the terrible visibility of the models c) the fact that you basically can't cfg anything. It also seemed for me that enemy models would conveniently float over rockets... etc etc :)

Last time I checked, rapha had a midrange PC, I think a 1070ti? According to his Twitch info, it's an Alienware Aurora R7 with an i7 8700, and that specific PC is available with a 1070ti. So while not as strong as something like a 2080ti, still quite a powerful system.

QC ran really bad on my system (i5 6600k, 1070, 16 GB RAM) as well, especially the frametimes are atrocious, and I heard similar things from others; but that's anecdotal, of course.

It ran at 100-200 fps for me, which seemed not more or less smooth to me than Q3 running at 1000 fps, capped to 125fps.

That's because QC can't stop itself from inserting a 50 ms frame every half a second.

It will show you 400 FPS all day long, but it's technically dropping to 20 every now and then.

(Humans perceive frame pacing differences of like 5 ms, so even though the averages look good, you do see the stutters. The FPS numbers are there just to gaslight you)

thats not true, I can play on NA East servers from germany, its definitely playable ... in days of q1/q2 I would never deemed that it was possible to be able to play fluently on NA east servers

What's not true?
The desync inreases dramatically with higher ping.
In other games, this would mostly be an issue for the high pinger. In QC, it becomes an issue for everyone on the server no matter the ping.

Fail occurrences like rails hitting seemingly behind walls, rails going through the player model, rockets doing no damage, getting stopped by invisible obstacles increase with high ping of one or more players on the server.

More often that I can count I had games where I hit every fucking rail, behind enemy model, in front of enemy model, does not matter I hit like Killsen.
Next game, different enemies, I hit basically nothing, rails don't register right on target, I can see them going through the fucking model and hitbox.
This is not how it should be. This is random and garbage.

In QC, it becomes an issue for everyone on the server no matter the ping.

This is how it is in any game that uses the "favour the shooter" philosophy for lag compensation, which seems to be the most popular way to go these days.

That's how it is in games that either use client-side hit registration or simulate client-side hit registration on the server end.

In these games, no matter your ping (or for any ping up to a certain cap), if you aimed right on your end, you get a hit, even if the enemy is behind cover on his end.

Even QL attempted this, but it was capped at 80ms.

This is probably not the only issue with QC's netcode though.

QC has a netcode unlike any other game I have played, which include: Q3A, QL, QW, Overwatch, CS, Valorant, Diabotical

Even in duel both on ping 20, local server, no lagging, there are such ridiculous occurrences such as:

-get railed waaaaay behind walls.
-get shafted behind walls and from impossible angles
-getting shafted, but taking no damage, then drop dead in an instance 2 sec later
- firing a rail, pressing the button, but the shot gets delayed.
-firing a rocket in close infight, but the shot gets delayed. you can even move the mouse during delay and it will fire sometime later, when it feels like it
-clearly dodging a rocket, but getting face-hit and killed still
-rockets that do no damage
-far away spash rockets that do nearly 100 damage
-hmg zoomed is weirdly delayed and less accurate then not zoomed, despite the game davs telling it vice versa
-the gauntlet not registering
-scale stomp being nowhere near the enemy but scoring a hit (his hitbox apparently grows to the size of a bus, butr not always, just when it feels like it)
-whole matches where you seem unable to hit anything
-whole matches where you seem unable to miss anything, almost every rail hits, it is so easy when that happens

My conclusion is, you have to develop a thick skin and never depend on clutch hits to enjoy this game, because it is just not reliable

The netcode somehow acts like a randomizer, every new server load is different. And for some retarded brainfart reason, you cannot stay on a server, it HAS TO reload after every single map. What gives? Has anyone ever heard of such a stupid concept? So you can never achieve consistent playing field, because you cannot keep a good server.

I'm just talking about the "getting shot behind wall" thing that people often complain about, and similar occurrences. No doubt there are other problems.

Any engine using that "favour the shooter" type of lag compensation will cause cases of being shot behind walls. The faster the movement, the worse it gets. It's unavoidable with such a system unless you use extrapolation or eliminate lag---that's lag for both players and also other sources of lag, such as from interpolation or buffering on the server.

I've never seen it confirmed, but I've heard at least a couple of times that QC servers add a hefty amount of lag from buffering, which is needed to some degree to reduce warp.

well I guess on pro level or semi pro level in 1on1 there might be a difference, but on fun TDM level I just dont see it

aha, really? I played that game on ULTRA 1080p with around 120fps on avrg in duel with no drops below 80 (rarely) with b350 mobo, ryzen 1600, r9 390, 2x8GB. You can guess what I got with low settings at the same resolution (the way pro players play it not only for fps gains, but also to turn off distractions as much as they can). How is that high end PC in mid 2020? Sure, it's not trash or smth, but the game is not that heavy as some says it is...

While I do miss Q3/OSP/CPMA/QL deeply + competition in it, I am enjoying QC and I defo feel as I am playing/watching quake. If it's better or worse is a topic for another day, but it's quake and I see a lot of really good old school players in it.

As for the ping topic, dunno how it felt playing, but k1llsen hit like a truck even with high ping and it was great from spectators view. I would prefer that even if slightly unfair (tho it's unfair for both players in a way so "fair" in the end), because it adds a lot to see USA players vs EU players vs other continents in the world players.

In the end we are still receiving quake shots with great production value, decent commentators, a lot of old school players that really show us their tricks (especially now they are up to speed and show good gameplay), some new blood even if not that new that also play really good and duel that atleast makes sense now + is a lot more fun to watch.

Instead of being glad id is investing money into a game that brings no income at all/too small to be counted for, produce content and comment those things in our favourite site from the past, we are here flaming, complaining, refusing to let go the past and leaving this site to die with virtually sometimes nothing to read/comment for days.

It's good that you don't care about stutters, or high fps for that matter with your 'not below 80'. Then again, you don't play Pro League against the calibre of players there, that might be a different story.

I'm glad id Software (or rather their new, evil overlords) invested money! Where did you see me not being glad? Please don't erect strawmen. I love watching QC. It's so much better to watch, then to actually play it.

Just by fixing the netcode, the game would go from 'ok' to 'best modern afps'. But no. I can only guess why they never made big efforts to fix the shitty netcode... Code base that Sabre left is too fucked probably.

The graphics are good, but not phenomenal. There is no good reason for a game of that era to run that slow and stuttery, besides being really unoptimised. 4 years in 'Early Access', 'nuff said.

Did you read everything I wrote at all? I said rare drops to 80fps on ULTRA, I played 1080p low + shadows and all pro settings locked at 144fps and never dropped below that value. Was buttery smooth and no stutters at all, even the slightest ones.

Yes, it is. Both 1600 and 390 (ofc not the reference model) are still plenty capable for maxed out 1080p and QC is not exactly a new title. Running it smooth on low @144fps lock on that config is not exactly revolutionary.

My specs are: MSI mobo, i7 4790k, 16GB DDR3 RAM (the good stuff), rtx2070, super-fast ssd, benq 2411 monitor 144 Hz.

Still I cannot get the game to run smoothly. In heavy ffa infights, I cannot see what's going on, everything is stuttery and weird. On huge maps, fps drops and it is stuttery.

Can't commend on your system, nor I know what you did with it. I can only comment for me and my systems I currently posses:
b350 prime plus, ryzen 1600 @ 3.85GHz, GB R9 390 G1 @ 1085Mhz, 2x8GB @3200MHz cl16
corsair viii hero, ryzen 3600x, GB 5700XT aorus @ 2GHz+ all the time, 2x16GB @3600Mhz cl16

The primary stuff, both machines are pending optimizations/OC as I recently dissembled my primary that is basically now a second less powerful machine that I will give to my nephew. Realistically that 3600x is also temp in my system, I need more cores for work thus that mobo if you wonder why pairing it with 3600x.

Played QC quite a lot on the first machine - stable fps, no drops, stable frametimes, locked 143-144fps for my 144Hz monitor. On low, before that period I played on ultra and was totally playable and didn't stutter at all really, just not locked fps (as I said, it super rarely dropped to 80 during duel if at all, it dropped to those values in ffa/tdm from time to time when a lot of things happen next to you). Ofc I can always point out that you have nvidia GPU's and I tested QC with two AMD GPU's, so there is that.

QC is also known to love CPU and stock ryzen 1600 is faster in games vs stock 4790k (-maybe some esports titles, but need to check for that, can't remember), tho I would expect some OC with that K and even then my ryzen ran 3.85GHz and was quite a lot faster vs stock in productivity/gaming.

My point is, our machines are too different to be compared. Still, I would expect that you should get decent performance from it in QC. Why pairing 2070 with that CPU tho? I know that changing platform is expensive, but that monitor is 1080p and I can see how in a lot of games the CPU limits the frames/smoothness.

What..... while sure production is pretty good I don't think the casters are that good and besides that it is really infuriating we cannot see the end frag?? (I even do think that this kind of 'sudden death' is boring but if you leave that aside the implementation is really the worst ever in a game??)

Damn, I really tried to watch at least the complete final between Cypher and K1llsen.
But ultimately I had to accept that the game disgusts me so much, I even have trouble watching just 10 minutes of a single map.

Anyway, props to the casters and players.
