I am sad that qc released, as it divided the community and shrink the already small ql player base. There are some good ideas behind qc but overall I find even ql first versions a lot more quake and fun + even the browser idea I liked.

QC would have been a good game with a good engine, community map making and video editing (i.e. fullserver videos) from technical point of perspective ... the bad engine and really the lack of content delivery really broke it ...

I liked them adding abilities, they are good as long as the game still remains quake, but eisen with his stupid turret, strogg with this stupid ufo and also clutch with his shield are just not quake imho, they would do good especially removing eisen from the game ... and with giving every champion different stack and movement abilities they overdid it imho. ... but at least they tried this, and it some way brought more wisdom to afps

I was fine with adding champions and abilities, even though these things didn't appeal to me personally, but if modern players want them, why not? What I could have never understood, however, is their betrayal of Carmack's idea of openness and community involvement: some very basic, mundane things (dedicated server, map editor, open assets format, game.dll source code). They had been asked about this shit at every press conference, yet all we had heard back was some vague "well, we cannot talk about it just yet" crap.

The vast majority of high-quality contents for any classic Quake (and which in turn boosted their popularity) were created by the community, not within id Software. Guys, you had been dealing with lower player numbers, you had limited developer resources, so why didn't you just let the game breathe on its own? Why do you even need a community manager when you've made everything to ensure that community participation is minuscule? If there's no SDK or even an ability to launch one's custom dedicated server to play with friends, there would be no new players, maps, or mods.

They are completely ignorant and stupid.

they should have fired every single old id employee behind this decision and let whoever comes next open up as much code as possible.

my guess is this decision is on bethesda part, supported by companies like microsoft that want to retain asmuch exclusives as possible. windows is a joke os at this point, supported only by the software that runs on it, hence so many devs are empty handed when it comes to opensourcing their code, including ancient games that nobody plays.

-When i first saw Doom3 leaked alpha, in a lanparty on the pc of who at that moment was top2 of Argentina, Realpap.

And yes, Doom3 is the last id game i finished and replied many times, bought a 5.1 surround and scared the shit out of so many people when i showed them the game with lights off.

Here we are in 2019, more than 15 years have passed, and im still waiting for the next WOAH moment...

To get to the next "wow" you'll have to go VR or some kind of implant or an advanced physics engine or a concept.

I don't think you'll ever get the doom 3 hit in something, it just did too many big things.

Moving lights, shadows, bump maps, specs, all of those things were virtually non existent in real time 3D before then, so when it all came together, that's why it had that effect.

At least you got to experience it first hand. That's something a lot of people would kill for and you only get it if you're about 30+.

Crysis (2007) was the last game that improved massively and pushed the bar higher. That game engine was truly astonishing. There was nothing remotely like that before.
Everything was destroyable, everything was explorable, and the graphic effects were jaw dropping. It still looks about as good as a modern game, but it came out 12 years ago. No, it's actually more enjoyable and gives more a sense of freedom than pretty much any modern game.

Ever since, the improvement between games has been so slow. Not just between games, but in general. Graphics today are barely even better than 5 years ago.

Maps are still completely undestructible. Most games barely have a physic engine and they're still about as good as Half Life 2's, and it came out in 2004.

I've yet to see a shooter with better enemy AI than FEAR's, and it came out in 2005.

In fact, 90% of games today have worse AI than original Half Life's marines. In that game, even tiny cocroaches had an AI, they reacted to light and corpse gibs.

Reasons for all this is a killer mix of lazyness and greed. Devs aren't even trying anymore, game developers just want to crap out periodical releases to keep the market going. Who cares to make a better game, kids will buy it anyway. Games are a drug, if the heroine is shit grade, cut with talc, you're still gonna buy it and for an higher price even.

Also Nvidia now basically has a monopoly, and has no interest whatsoever in pushing graphic engines and cards. Much betteer to sell pretty much the same technology in a span of a decade insted of actually pushing research like it happened in the '90s and early 2000s.

Games 10 years from now will look pretty much the same. Still undestructible maps, still retard tier AI, same textures. But they'll require 10 times the specs to run, of course.

not surprised. they have nowhere else to go gameplay wise, and they can't create new maps easily, so the game is finished.

imagine if they had just made a game on a non shitty engine, that was an actual class based shooter or an actual quake game, rather than just trying to merge the two. if they had gotten rid of the resource management and just had characters with their own kit and weapons ala overwatch/tf2, the character attributes would have actually made sense. we could have had an actual class based team game that could have been even better than overwatch and would have attracted so many more to the game. it would also have given them more time to rebalance the characters and abilities.

instead we got this shitty mishmash of broken abilities, broken weapons, broken character attributes, tiered armors, hourglasses, all mixed in with the original quake game types. and the worst part is they couldn't even add in ca, the game type which easily integrated new players into the game and allowed players to enjoy gunfights without the resource management aspect.

at this point, it's been too long since quake 4 to fuck up yet another entry into the series. the higher ups will probably decide that resurrecting the single player component is the best way to go. it will have a much higher input cost to make than a shitty game like quake champions, but at least it will attract a larger audience of casuals, older fans of the single player, and the younger gen-z audience as well. they'll also be able to port it to multiple platforms, like they did with doom.

quake 4 will also soon be 15 years old, and it was the shittiest single player game in the series. people joke about how half life 3 is never coming, but the single player of quake has been just as neglected by id.

There's definitely a sweet spot.

Its the opposite you have to aim, instead of spamming.

In QC I literally dont have to not shoot the LG. I can use it from start of the game to the end without missing a shot, the only issue is short ammo. Dodging? Yeah, GL with that noobs.

In q4 you cannot spam LG you will miss all the shots, you have to find proper position / situation you have to get your aim right. But the LG is much stronger itself, it is possible to burn full stack, like 200 hp in 1second. If you hit 70%+.

Also rocket launcher in quake 4 is worlds apart from qlive / q3 / qc. Its a much better weapon. See my skill in skull crusher video with rocketlauncher, its because I have been playing q4, nobody else in QC hits that much with RL.

Railgun in q4 just takes more skill and speed to use, but it feels much better because hitbox in q4 is solid thing, and in qc it is random bullshit thing. Where you can miss by hitting outline of the clothing or between legs during champion movement.

So why not make the hitbox 1 pixel? There is obviously a point where it gets too small. That point will depend on what human ability is. If it becomes too small, people will surely aim in the general direction of the target where they see it, but they can't have any high confidence that what they are doing will result in a hit. They shoot only in the hopes of a hit, and that's why it is spammy.

But certainly, for a god like yourself, 1 pixel would be no problem. :D

Well, hitbox in q4 is smaller / same size than your average crosshair. Its also moving very fast, which makes tracking it almost impossible unless you are some superhuman being.

Same crosshair you can put in 20 different spots on average hitbox in QC.

It was good because there were 2 versions of quake 4.

Q4 1.3.0 and 1.4.2

1.4.2 has very small hitbox, even so called pro players were not hitting it at all. I have played with many of those, and they were very scary... with their 20-30% lg.

Its not a problem for me to hit 40-50% tho.

1.3.0 had larger hitbox, and it was easier to play, the reason why many people prefered it.

But in 1.3.0 where tox / fatal1ty played (famous game). I am known for not missing at all. If I do miss in q4 1.4.2, in 1.3.0 version I was raping people while playing rail only and hitting 40+ rails in row in a duel. And 60%+ LG, and so on.

I agree at certain things, like size of hitboxes and space of game in QC, make it a game of relaxation not aiming.

Generally, I feel like that decreasing hitbox size is good to raise the skill ceiling ingame full of aim gods.

Q3 has thousands of maps so we could pick out the best ones. The chance of good maps increases if you can select one of thousand instead of one of ten.

That's true, but it's a bit unrealistic to expect thousands of maps to be made for any game, especially if only a handful end up getting played in the majority of the modes.

I think we'll be lucky to end up with 20 maps in the end for QC.

Of course, the answer is to get the community to make maps like before, but how many community map makers are willing to put in the time to make high detail maps for QC? Don't they have to be made in Maya? I imagine it takes quite a bit more time than your typical Q3 map.
