I like the game actually :p. I prefer QL but I don't think QC is bad, it is certainly 1000000000x better than CSGO and Overwatch and deserves to be on the esport scene if these ones are in for sure (I'm not sure I could possibly hate a game more than OW though because of the overall look and atmosphere + unecessary hype so that's quite easy).

I also like the ESR rage and negativity too so that's why I paid a tribute to some matters here (the negativity + the sarcasm about "world" championships and so on).

CS:GO is far superior spectator game. QC obviously better gameplay for any of us quake fans

Team modes in Quake are indeed harder to follow as a spectator but they make lots of improvements with new spectator HUDs and so on (although not perfect). Duel is perfectly fine to follow though, especially in QC in my opinion.

CS:GO is alright to watch, it's just less spectacular I find.

Look, i'm a die hard fan of Quake, but I can't get to like QC duel. The mode is shallow. After 20 minutes you have seen what the mode has to offer. Situations keep repeating. What changes is the narrative of the two players involved. And that might be cool if you have never seen quake, but after almost two decades, this show is poor. The whole "champion meta" is not that special despite annoying people trying to portait as such, and in my opinion it does not compensate for what duel has lost in terms of strategy.

I agree with everything you said. That being said, that doesn't mean I don't find QC infinitely superior to Overwatch and at least as viable as CSGO in terms of show. Yet, I'm still more fond of the old Quake mechanics.

I want to expand on what I wrote, and give some details.

Every version of Quake had a so called ‘reset’ situations. They would trivially apply when starting a new map, but otherwise occur sporadically during the matches. For a reset to happen, you would need a situation of contested control and a frag score close enough that could consider the players in an even situation.

Resets are an important point in any spectacle or narrative as they bring a closure to what just happened, but they are not (and cannot be) the meat of the show. Some of the best moments of Quake are related to how a player would struggle to overcome a situation of pure disadvantage and turn it to its favour. Cypher playing out of control in Aerowalk against Cooller, and then turning it at the end? There’s plenty of cases. Imbalance is what creates interesting situations, and resets may or may not be the resolution of those.

The key issue of QC Duel right now is that you can hit the 'reset' button too often and too easily, to the point there’s almost nothing in the middle to create the meat. Not only the various rounds imply a reset, but within a single round, resets keep happening.
It’s simple to see why. To have a reset, you need a situation where you re-stack your character to the point you can reasonably move around the map and contest for items. This is easy in QC because:

1. You have to take less items to max out your stack in QC compared to QL.
2. Minor HP/Armors are more important in QC than in QL. There’s more often an abundance of them, as some champions don’t need too many, and denying them is not really a practice in QC as there’s too many.

On top of this, you have the fact that stacks don’t matter as much as they used to:

1. There’s various of instant-kill abilities in QC, which completely ignore the stack.
2. For most champions the stack is capped to lower values.
3. The different hitboxes skew battles in favour of lighter champions, making bigger stacks worth less than the same values in QL.

As a result, QC is a game where stacks are a cheap commodity, and where walking away from a fight is often all you need to hit ‘reset’ the situation. In terms of depth, this compares quite poorly to QL, where being out of control would mean at least a minute (if not more) of careful defensive play to build a (still inferior) stack, with very risky sneaks to the in-control areas. In QL you have a much stronger sense of portions of the map being dangerous or safe, and how that would evolve based on the stack meta. Champions are supposed to compensate for this, but from what I've seen, they don't really do it. It's much easier to avoid certain places to reduce the advantage of a champion than to manage the stack disparity QL had.

Ye I have completely stopped playing Quake myself, let alone watching it, which really annoys me. I just can't find any enjoyment in QC, and Diabotical seems like the only AFPS highlight to look forward to atm :/

What is wrong with Ketchup ? I don't understand what people don't like about Ketchup and Mustard, could you please elaborate a bit ? I certainly don't find them more useless or annoying than Zoot + Ins or something (not that those are bad either).

Ketchup and Mustard gravely lack knowledge and skill in quake and thus talk absolute rubbish at times. But what is worse they just talk to keep the flow alive without delivering any useful thought. At quakecon they were really keen on introducing the champions to the audience (I get it, thats probably a good thing to do, first big event etc) and it went a little like this.

Zorlac is slow but stacked thats the deal.

Sorlac is really fast and stacked which makes him so dangerous
-1 min later after a situation happened
Sorlac is struggling very hard against faster characters because its so slow
-1 min later after a situation happened
Sorlac is an excellent counter to faster champions due to its speed+stack combo

After a couple of matches ketchup had presented Sorlac as everything from very strong to very weak, from very fast to very slow (calling it painkiller movement at some point) which is a perdect summary of the caster bundle.

They do not have an inch of understanding of what is happening on screen so they bend their idiotic theories to what just happened a minute ago.

But lets talk about another issue,
they are a successful ESL caster duo as I understand and you can see their routine shine. Unfortunately their fakehype action style casting is absolute generic and fails completely to excite me on any level. If they do the trick for you fine, who am I to judge.

When I see a good matchup and I see ketchups name popup the match is ruined for me. They should be fired because of lack of quake competency. I also hate their generic casting style but that is personal preference.

edit: and now that I have to endure the ketch once more he does the same as in quakecon. He is flooding his cocasters with a barrage of selfevident nonsensical trash. All he is saying is "the game is difficult, the game is fast and competitors need a competitor mind set" and he reiterates it dogmatically in multiple versions like a religious fanatic. I have really learned to hate him with a passion.

I think the chosen team is ok, but for Quake there's a plethora of better casters to choose from.

2GD, DDK, Tosspot and Wheat/RedEye (latter one as host), are simply way better than ZoOt, Ketchup, Makaveli and Jehar. And the thing is, for Quake it's doable to think of another 8 better casters.

For example right now I tuned in to the stream, and zoot and mak had to fill in for 5 minutes before the match. Sure they did the job, but they are just nowhere near as entertaining or as insightful as 2GD+Joe used to be. I don't remember a single word said.

Well, why couldn't they love both Mortal Kombat and Quake after all ? Are we supposed to be interested in one game only or something ? I followed Quake but also Starcraft 2 for a while when it came out so I don't see how they couldn't have been part of the Quakers for a long time, only being anonymous.

I think they are doing a good job personally. For sure, they are not as insightful as 2GD, but I like the way they managed to talk about nothing for very long sequences when the streams had fails during some competitions, plus the general osmose there is between Ketchup and Mustard. They also have some meme worthy sentences that are now being quite famous in the chat like the "bear in mind" or "ever so slightly", or the excellent "oh NOOOOES" from Ketchup, etc. So not insightful at 100%, but definitely capable and funny at times.

I think they don't deserve the negativity at all, if they are passionate about the game, they will improve step by step.

Also, I actually do not watch the stream when commentators are speaking between matches really. So no, people talking generally bores me to death too, but I could appreciate the performance they put when preventing nothingness and trying to entertain the audience when the stream was having a massive break because of technical problems, etc.

We won't agree about this particular issue in the end and that's not a problem, but I still stand by them, I think they get way too many downgrading comments, although I'm perhaps part of the minority of viewer who finds them ok ^^.

EDIT : Besides, nobody knew zoot before he started to become "public", and he was highly criticized at first by the audience that always compared him to the legendary 2GD and Joe, etc. So, in the end I'm confident Ketchup and Mustard will improve and raise their level. The only difference is that they appear at a point where the game has somewhat of an audience and they are funded by Bethesda which is obviously less of a task than creating ZLive when Quake Live was one foot in the grave already.

Zoot was well known in the CTF scene for streaming and casting league matches before he started doing big events, he did by no means come from nowhere. He is quite the clichee success story of a kid who streamed for fun becoming a professional caster.

this toxic vs voo match shows one of the flaws of the round based duel system imo. 8 min overtime as of right now, and nobody wants to commit because whoever dies first will lose the round / map.

how is it a flaw of round based duel system? the old duel could be taken as a duel that lasts 1 round.

if anything the problem lies in stack sizes because passive play doesn't punish you by allowing the more aggressive player get insurmountable stack which would overcome the defender's advantage. currently the players' stacks are never disproportionate enough compared to weapon damages to make attacking a nobrainer decision.

in the 10 minute system you know you have a bit of time to plan a comeback since it's always a two-minute overtime instead of sudden death.

ah, i forgot about that (don't really watch qc that much). you are right, that influences quite a bit.

maybe in case of sudden death, they should starve players of health and armors - if you pick up an item after SD, the item would not respawn anymore. would introduce different kind of endgame, of guessing/knowing which items are still available to rebuff.

the armor system is retarded, map control means jack shit because the out of control player can easily get 50 armor simply because the other guy physically can't pick it up. then again, if you remove this mechanic, the round based system makes no sense whatsoever because a guy with 0 armor lasts 1 second in this game.

low hp sorlag is 150/50 in a matter of seconds 99% of the time and then the cycle continues.

it's weird how quakecon had some amazing matches, but this was mostly just boring as fuck.

I don't understand the question, timing by feel is an actual thing that people used to do. You can show up almost on time every time, but its not precise...

Yeah the thing is, QL pros need to be able to time 4 items simultaneously to be on top. In numbers, not by feel. In QC it obviously does not weight that much because there we got rapha being able of timing items by number and not being in the final and there we have raisy not timing items by number being in the final.

well since the item times are easy as fuck and theres only 2 main items, you can time by feel again.

QC is barely a quake game which is why we had the ridiculous outcomes so far in tournaments.

It's a very hard question, why some players win against the others. Cooller lost some games even when he held full item control for almost full map time.

In QL the stack advantage was one of the deciding factors, which was helping you to choose a moment TO BE AGGRESSIVE.

In QC stacks dont mean that much, so its more about catching your opponents unprepared, dealing some cheap/unreturned damage from a better position or a trap.

And cancelling his options to escape. Because most of the current meta champs could just leave any bad fight instantly (nyx, slash, anarki, doomguy, clutch...).

So, mostly its two fights, not one: in 1st you deal more damage than receive and thus force your enemy to spent his ult. Then you attack him the 2nd time when he hasn't a way to escape.

You time 1 or 2 items and the rest are approximate based on sequence. I think I heard rapha only times MH exactly (in QL) and bases the rest on feel/approximate times for rest.

I have never timed an item to the second using the clock in a tournament match ever that I can remember and I think I am reasonably decent at quake live.. I think timing 4 items would put you at a disadvantage hnless you can think about more things at once than your average person haha

well I think with quake champs it's usually who rode their luck a little and hit the shots that won.. you never feel comfortable even vs a guy you are significantly better than, not like in quake live or whatever where you feel comfortable even out of control. Couldn't tell you didn't watch the games tho, I rarely watch tournaments anyway let alone in qc where I don't like the game

QC duel in couple of words:

Anarki, Doom, Nyx - take Anarki, run around like you have diarrhea, hit a rail, do another lap around a map, hit a rail, another lap around a map, hit rail and finish with rocket. Take Doom, jump like crazy and hope for hitbox/netcode bug to help out while you rocket an enemy, if hitbox/netcode bug doesnt help, use active ability to run away, repeat. Take Nyx - hit rail, hide for 1 min, hit rail, hide for 1 min, hit rail and use active ability, follow enemy and try to surprise enemy with rocket.

Almost no one uses Ranger, Sorlag, Scalebearer, Galena, BJ, Clutch, Visor...

Btw, Raisy is a big refreshment on the scene, love his aggressive style, too bad other players play slow and too much on safe side.

ps Anarkis duel tactics can be used with Slash, we saw how Tox played...

That's just the nature of champions based games. Use the flavor of the month which is why I will never like that concept.

Actually it isn't, which has been beyond me for over a decade.
We'd expect European teams to roflstomp NA by default, maybe one or two NA teams might surprise but overall Europe should have top4-top8 every single time, but no.

If it is anything besides TDM European teams get rekt every single time, excluding this years Quakecon Sacrifice. The last time Europe won something in CTF was 13 years ago when AAA won Quakecon.

MD(tox,winz,link1n,zyrinx) did win Quakecon 2015 ctf, but otherwise you are correct.

Problem with a moba fps is id software isn't competent enough or have the resources to continually balance the champions.

A few words

This tournament was among the best I have seen in a long time. Production was far more professional than the annual shitshow that is qcon. However, the constant background noise was annoying and a few premature switches to facecams when game was still running are noteworthy. Ill let the MacAffe crash slip. The issues that caused players to abort the match (Dahang, Garpy) were probably QC software related? In a rapha match noctis had a 10 sec screen freeze what was up with that?

The tournament format was Ok but the schedule could have considered the EU timezones more I feel. Really not well was the promotion of the tournament, there was great confusion among spectators as to when the matches start and plusforward and ESR listed different and wrong times. Is it so hard to list times on the DH site for EU and NA or to install a countdown timer on stream and site in order to avoid that shit?

I have lashed out on ketchup enough in this thread already but he is a problem. More skilled casters were able to dilute his rambling but you cant make shit to gold.

QC itself, well Ive seen a couple of 90 rails that were not charged but I have to admit I love watching duel. It is more fun to spectate than some QL matches. But there is a problem with the sudden death, it gives players no motivation to do something so they tend to exceed 10 minutes and more. I would suggest a gradual extension of item spawn times to turn pressure on.

The players were a joy to watch. Here are some honorable mentions.

Big up K1llsen for coming back vs raisy from last champion to taking the map. I hope he will eventually find the victory that he so desperately needs.

Dooi the orbb master put on a hell of a show proofing that versatility on champions is something worth to be trained.

The only really troubling thing were the viewing numbers, we had a peak in group stage of 4100 as far as I could tell. I dont believe it is because the game is a failure, it needs drastically more content and proper promotion. I feel id should have invested 900.000 in an ad campaign and 100.000 in prize instead of blowing all in prize money.

Also Noctis cut the shit and start taking duel seriously.

edit: why not spice things up a bit and have some matches cocasted by a pro? we know that rapha or 2gd are excellent casters. I would also love to hear what the young guns have to say about matches.

The best part was when Ketchup asked noctis how he was performing so well in duel when he was primarily a Sacrifice player, and noctis replied: "Well, I have been playing duel for 15 years..."

Which doesn't mean Ketchup didn't know that. Considering noctis is known to play duel at high level but not performing like he does in team games because he doesn't really have the nerves and mindset to win duels when under pressure, asking him what changed this tournament that allowed him to perform one of his biggest achievement in a duel tournament in his career wasn't a particularly dumb question.

Not that I defend Ketchup at any price but seriously, this is all very understandable. I follow the Quake scene for years now and I could have asked him a similar question given the opportunity.

If all reporters never asked obvious questions, then there would not be much to talk about . And then people with no knowledge of the game and scene would learn nothing .

I totally agree that for new viewers it's necessary to give a little background and context on the people who are competing on stage.

But I don't think I'll ever agree that the best time to introduce a player's achievements and historical profile is during the post-game interview, that's what the entire pre-game period and analysis desk is for. Use the interview time to ask him questions specifically about that game (possibly his next match up) instead (imo).

I had found the quakecon sacrifice games almost impossible to watch but I was able to actually follow the sacrifice gameplay at dreamhack and enjoyed watching it (Dahangs plays with Clutch, unloveables soul passing etc),

anyone know if the spectating/cam were changed in any way? Or maybe teamwork / flow is just getting better as teams play more?

They did do a better job, they were following the soul carrier, and had a fixed cam over the power-up. So basically you got to see the soul carrier get in/get out and then the defense of the soul area, and if the soul was stolen you got to see it carried and the result.

It worked pretty good, also power up follow on pick-up. I have to say they really thought about it and made it much much better to spec, so they got that right at least.

Higher level of sacrifice now also than before. Especially from the americans, they improved ALOT.

Sometimes the game feels really random and a lot more luck based than QL, but the fact that the nr 1. player on global rankings finished first in the tournament (and the rest also somewhat similar to their rankings) prooves the opposite. Well played Raisy!

Raisy is clearly talented.. and even if you think QC favors his playstyle, you have to appreciate his composure at the highest level for such an up-and-comer.

i don't know if you've ever been to tournaments of any kind. you can be the best there is at home (or in a controlled setting) and fall apart in tournament..

When in the semis he made a comeback by hitting an air rocket to Doom with his ability, while the camera showed him displaying no emotion whatsoever, I knew he was going to be the champion. He's even more cold blooded than rapha, which is saying something.
