(I disagree though as the netcode of all chess games I know of is perfectly fine. It allows both players to play extremely close to their potential, and it doesn't change the actual game.)

I do 'somewhat' bother with the game, but last time I played it was some fairly early version.... So whatever view I have on it is probably outdated by now.

I was going to (re-)check it out in the near future though. (which is several weeks up till 2 months from now)

In general though I'm skeptical about the game, mainly because I don't see them gaining any significant player base.... (regardless of the quality of the game)
Simply because the game mode is too hardcore, and there is no real budget to market the thing. So I see a lot of challenges for them in the actual release of the game, rather than writing the game. And if all "quake players" go to reflex....... Then you'll have a similar situation as QL had after a year of its release.... Where the community is just too much separated by skill. But with even less player base for both games...

Alternatively, you can just milk chess off by saying your hobby X is chess with guns, or with bells or whatever. With some of these examples, I wish people had more things to compare to, because no, not everything is like chess.

Look up the "Houdini" chess engine. It has a proclaimed ELO rating of 3300. The highest rated player in the world is Magnus Carlsen, whom has a rating of 2844 at this point.

I'm not saying that Houdini is impossible to beat, but in matches between humans, you won't really see anyone beating en opponent of almost 500 higher ELO-rating, so Houdini would probably win more often than losing, versus the top Grandmasters, I believe.

and 3300 isn't even in the top 10 engines (although i personally think of elo as an incomplete measurement, chessmetrics.com is an interesting option with different flaws).

Chess simple? Learning the basics is simple becomming good is not.

It's quite similar with Quake. You can tell anyone to go around and shot enemies, but it's so far from what level of competition game provides.

Bad comparision. Explaining strafejumping, item control, item timing, weapon selection, etc takes much more time than explaining how to move chess pieces.

you are right but it's still possible for the newbie to have fun running around and shooting mindlessly as long as his opponents are newbie(s) aswell.

actually you don't need to know all the deep aspects of quake to enjoy it, if you play FFA with friends that are at your level it can still be extremely fun. And getting the 1st "impressive!" or "excellent!" is quite rewarding and enjoyable.

but in chess it's impossible to have fun if you don't know how the pieces work and the basic strategies.

and also it's extremely simple to understand how the weapons works in quake cause there is no alternate fire mode and the weapons are "easy" to use.

I used to try explaining what gaming is to some people. Some of them (usually older age) are fans of chess, understand the game and played a lot in the past or even participated in chess tournaments. However at the same time they criticize computer games and treat it like waste of time. This is so annoying :)

chess is a cool game, its just sad so few people continue to play in the clubs lately ... in many clubs there are just older players ... I dont know, its a socializing game, you can discuss positions, etc., what are they doing instead now, sitting in front of the pc wathcing youtube, commenting shit on internet forums or playing one minute bullet blitz ... things which really are not too social, or is it because there arent almost any women? :-)

the problem with chess is that the pieces are imbalanced... pawns straight up suck and they are the first ones you move... rooks and bishops are really only good in some situations and don't even get me started on the +forward queen players omg

However, speaking of wooden version, it is quite impossible to find the most important ingredient these days - a person to play irl. Every place i know where chess-addicts hang up is like a sanctuary of unstable grumpy old farts, everybody is at least 60 years old, and you wont find a single sane person. Have you ever seen the South Park episode Spare Change? Thats it.

One could objectively say that game A is better than game B, and that might be accurate. The problem is, it doesn't matter, because things need to be designed not just to be good or legitimate, but rather, to match the level of douchebaggyness in the current world.

Anyone would say that chess is better than checkers, but checkers is more popular. Anyone would say that Mozart is better than Justin Bieber, but... well, I don't even want to say it. And that's the real world. It's no different with video-games, whether they be esports or otherwise.

What that means, is that if all the gamers are douchebags, then the games themselves have to be suitably douchebaggy (hence things like moba's). Now, it might be possible for a legitimate game to be modified to change with the people. If the people become more full of shit, some aspect of the game needs to match that level of shit. Likewise, if the people become less full of trash, the game needs to become less trashy.

I say 'some aspect of the game', because I see no reason why the game's purity must be corrupted. A section of the game can always be maintained, while the various other aspects are modified. It's not like random dickwads are playing at the pro-level anyway. If, therefore, the pro-level is kept uncorrupted by the changing times/douchebags, and the rest of the game adapts to the overall level of fuckheadedness among the current gaming population, a game could conceivably keep its legitimacy while also achieving profitability. Or, in short, selling-out may not be necessary.

Chess is obviously different from Quake but there are similarities, especially in duel: The way of thinking ahead of your opponents move, calculation, long term plans, short term plans etc. Chess is just missing the feature of execution. Its the predecessor of modern tournaments and competition. Its also based on pure skill and it doesn't has too many variables that could count as luck as games like poker or , I know you gonna hate me, counter-strike.

Also you cant compare online Chess with real Club or Tournament Chess, you just can't.

No computer can emulate the ability to sacrifice material in certain aspects of the game to get a better position on the board and thus turn/win the game.

Thats exactly the beauty of the game, the deep strategy behind it.

Knights are good in closed positions, bishops in open positions.
You need to play in such way the board is in favour of you.
If an amateur attacks you too early with the Queen you just defend by attacking it and you gain tempo by developing a piece while your opponent retreats one.

aaaaaaand the best part is you dont need expensive hardware/internet to compete, there is no room for any excuses.

If you loose, its your fault. Not the fault of ping/luck/+forward or any other bullcrap excuses

Not gonna lie, it might be.

I won in chess against myself. Was very curious during the game how come my opponent's tactics are so very familiar.

It is just simple and has such low requirements so on the LAN it can be played without PC.

The funniest thing about chess is that you don't even need chess to play chess. The whole game is an idea, someone may say a very strong one. You could just say your next move.

We played chess using rocks on one of country trips.
It was a rocky game but still lots of fun. We drew checkerboard on the sand.
