What is the point of making a new map if nobody can play it?

I made maps and people can play them so ugh. :)

On a serious note, with this official instance where people can present their work it is not only easier to learn mapping but also easier and faster to get your work to the attention of the devs.

If I saw a shot that a map of mine were going to be played, then I might put time in it. But after houres of work and cuddeling with the devs the map gets INTO quakelive. But in the end dm6 is in the mappool... well done community

if you put your heart, time and effort into a product that is not a great quality, it will not be accepted

I think there are and were a lot of maps made in Q3-times which have theoretically the SAME potential as ZTN and dm6. They just never got the chance. In QL its a bit different, because only id allows certain maps. But i think Battleforged is pretty similar to dm6 and could easily replace it. If people just start playing it.

You don't need anything special.
Of course a high resolution is nicer to work with but that applies to anything. You probably shouldn't run intel graphics I guess but that should be the only requirement.

You can use the clipper tool (press x) to cut a selected brush by defining a cutline using two points. I will cover this soon in a video tutorial.

Rocks can be pretty complex. I'd suggest you focus on more basic things for now. (Get a complete layout done and making things work propperly)

I see a problem here.. Ok, so I get a map done, now it takes X (probably minumun 3 months) months to get out on the servers and to the people. Now it's X months in premium usage only (Was it 3-5 months or something, too tired to scroll it from the pages). So when it might the first time get out to the masses of players it's 6-8 months PLUS how many months it takes until it is in the pool of standard maps which is something like 1-6 months(???).

So conclusion = Yes you can make a map but considering reality that you will probably not get it in to proper knowledge within ~7-14 months plus the time what it takes for people to actually start playing/knowing/voting for it.

There are a couple of shortcuts: Getting map in to CTF/TDM/Duel-pool directly by HOQ, CB, Zowie, Faceit or some similar one. But there possibility is only available for a few older mappers (I atleast assume). So basicly this is a great idea which greatly goes wrong. Possible solution for this would be servers dedicated only for custom maps and that players could upload their own maps via the Quakelive-pages. After Quakelive staff approving the map as "working" they would release it on the custom map servers and the players would decide. This is a feature I suggest would be a part of the Free of Charge Quakelive that is offered. Playing these maps after they are "known" could be normal Premium/Pro-stuff when they become "known/tourney maps"..

Sooo much good and bad in this but I guess this is a good start by ID even if I feel like this hasn't been thinking it thru. This could be something awesome and let's hope it will be!

The main problem is what sells subscriptions is classic maps, not new ones. There are at least 5 absolute classics missing in each mod so they should focus on getting those instead.

Well I do asume it takes some time until the forum fires off anyways. But ID could ofc make a faster path to "accept" the maps for subscribers or something similar to ease they way for them. It's not like any subscriptions would disappear, more likely to get a bunch of new ones. And coding it / keeping an employee checking the maps every third day or something doesn't cost the company so much that it would actually make it any difference. Mostly this is a question if they want to keep QL alive and big for a long time or if they want to do something instead...

Best case scenario would be that ID themselves would make it as easy as possible to do new maps. In this case they wouldn't really have to import any own ones or tweak them to work in QL. In other words, the scene would do the job for them while they would collect the money.

Now i started learning GtkRadiant to make my map . After some tests, i have a big doubt about control the final size of map.
What reference can i take to define the size? It seems to me that the reference should be the Bot size...am i right? i think that bots and all items have a fixed size and the map shoud be built taking that as THE reference.If it is so...on the radiant grid how i can define that size?

Hey,
to get an idea about the scale you can place a player spawn (right click in the top view, info->info_player_deathmatch) - the pink box has roughly the height of a player model.
Also make sure you got "Display size info" enabled in the radiant settings (edit->preferences in the menu bar), I think the shortcut for that is 'Q'.
Usually, to get your scale right you can simply stick to multiples of 64 units for your geometry (128-192 units width and height is a decent doorway size for example).
If you want to you can check the example map (infinity) that comes with radiant, to open it use edit->open in the menu bar.

If i need make my own textures i will use photoshop, so i need know about size, resolution, and how to use it in radiant.
1st question: what size in pixels would be the texture in order to fit one square of 64 units ?
2nd question: which is the best resolution to make it, or what is the most used res?...and what image type, jpg, png...?
3rd question:in which folder i put the texture, in order that radiant can use it?
4th question: a image texture is an easy thing to make, but what about a shader? Ofc is more complex, but can it be done in photoshop?...or other app?

Hey,

1. 64*64px will translate to 64*64 units - however you can fit textures to surfaces so you can fit 128*128px on 64 units as well.
2. Textures always need to be power of 2 (so: 64px, 128px,256px, 512px, 1024 px) -- for the image format, use JPG, if you need alpha channels use TGA -- for the resolution, 512px are good enough for QL, it depends on how big you want the texture to be ingame, really. If you have a texture covering a large surface you might want to go for a higher resolution
3. create a new folder for your map in baseq3\textures (for example I always use ct_mapname - you could use xp_mapname)
4. shaders are simple scripts that you can edit in any text editor - for the beginning I suggest you grab .stock shader files and adapt them for your needs; it takes a while to get comfortable with shaders -- if you need help on shader parameters google for the Q3A shadermanual.

I made the install like u say on tut 01: on my desktop i created a folder named qlmapping and inside is radiant and wolfcam. Everything works ok till now.
Now the stupid question: the only baseq3 folder i find is in wolfcam folder. Is that one u mean?
Or the baseq3 folder of quakelive game?
But none of them have a folder "textures"

On Gtradiant preferences / textures i made "tex increment matches grid". But the increment on grid 1 remains the same as on grid 8 or anyother one. Wasnt supposed to match the diferent grids?

Almost finishing my tiny dm6, only missing the only 2 jumppads existing in the map. But something weird comes in : i make the first jumppad and it works ok. But
when i make the 2nd one, it gets connected to the first .So i jump from one to another, is so crazy.

Just try remaking the jumppad. Be sure to NOT copy/paste existing target entities or trigger brushes. Be sure to create a new trigger/target for every jumppad you make.

Wow ! Glad see u, Cityy ;) Well...excuse my almost none experience with radiant : detail brush is a brush i deformed puling vertices/edges? If so, yes, a lot !

Simply put: Convert every brush that does not seal off your map from the void to detail (select the brush and hit ctrl+M; you can filter detail brushes with ctrl+d). Will give a more detailed answer when I find time.

One of my friends told me that this pk3 dont work...something i was expecting.
I made it "by the book" : 1 folder with the bsp, 1 folder with the textures, 1 folder with the screenshot ( same name for bsp and screenshot). Zip of these 3 folders, changed .zip to .pk3 and checked "read only". When i put this pk3 inside the ql baseq3, wasnt supposed it work??? ...or i miss something ?? Plz help

Yes, you need to encrypt it!

In order to test your map in Quake Live you need to pack it up in a .pk3 and encrypt it using quakelivedec.exe.
.PK3 files are nothing but renamed .zip files and have the same structure as your baseq3 directory.

Quakelivedec.exe uses a simple input-output system to encrypt files. To use it create a .bat file (make new .txt file, change extention to .bat) and enter:

<path to quakelivedec.exe> mymap_notencrypted.pk3 mymap_encrypted.pk3

Adjust the path (drop the <>) and the names to fit your pk3 file. To load the map in QL, drop the encrypted pk3 into your quakelive\baseq3 directory and set it to read only (right click, properties). Then use the Quake Live ingame console to load up the map (\map mapname).

What you should do:
Put quakelivedec.exe, your pk3 file and your .bat file in the same folder. Then put this into your .bat file: "quakelivedec.exe mypk3.pk3 mypk3_encrypted.pk3" (without quotes, adjust the file names)

Then set mypk3_encrypted.pk3 to read only and put it into your quakelive baseq3.

Hmmm...not again. Made exactly what u said, and a new file appeared named "swift_encrypted.pk3". At this moment i was...WOW !! I put it in QL baseq3, entered in practise mode and in console wrote "map swift_encrypted" ...naa...cant find that pk3.
Tried with read only both ways (checked and unchecked) , renamed it to "swift" only...no way... this is realy annoying.

You need to use the name of your .bsp that is inside the pk3 file when you use \map in the console, not the pk3 name!

Your pk3 structure is total nonsense..

Inside the pk3 you need a folder called "maps", a folder called "levelshot" and a folder called "textures".

Inside the maps folder you put your bsp and aas file, inside the levelshots folder you put a screenshot of your map named like your map (abc.jpg) and in the textures folder you put the folder containing your maps textures.
Just look at the zip I sent you back in the day, it is all in there..

It was missing the .aas file. Now it works ! But....in the moment i go to the jump pad it crashes... Any file missing?

.aas file is the bot file, it is not necessairily required.
The crash when you use a jumppad is probably not related to a missing file but to your jumppad build being faulty. Try recreating it.

Made a all new jump pad...but game still crashes. Do i need to add a script file? Or have to make the jump pad in a diferent way? If so, what way? I wonder why GTKRadiant dont have the necessary tool to make the .pk3 file. Is`nt Radiant a IdSoftware product?
Ok, i give u this soup but u have to get the spoon from one else.

Are you sure you did the jumppad right?
1) trigger
2) make trigger a trigger_push, deselect
3) create target_position, deselect
4) select the trigger, select the target, hit ctrl + k

Also note that jumppads can not push you downwards, only upwards.
GTKradiant is not an id software product, it is an open source editor based on the original id software tool.

You can't. Unless you somehow compile it for Q3 and set up a Q3 server just for that.

You can use the "pirate" client/server to test it, but beware it may be illegal and your account may be suspended if they catch you using it. ;)

It's nice but I don't think anything can be played on it. Maybe very small FFA? I don't think it's fit for duel. It's so small and weapons are so hard to obtain that it would be a nightmare for whoever is out of control. Well, I think it would be.

I have two comments about abc.
Firstly, please make it brighter. While it's ok-ish with lightmap, it's really very dark on vertex light.
Secondly, I think the upper part needs more than one access.
