Without 3D skills or seeing any of your work I don't think there is anything elitist about you. The concept of the job title seems bigger than you and something you seem happy to put out there without actually defining it unless pushed.

What I'm saying is, you're implying an awful lot with the term VFX artist as it conjures up a lot of cool things as VFX is top of the chain, but when you then go on to say you do not do 3D stuff then its a bit of an anti climax and it sounds like you're hiding beyond the glamor of the term that other people have built up. Because to most people when they think of VFX artist, most people will be thinking in 3D becaue 9/10 those are those shots that make people's draw drops.

I consider myself a 3D artist, but I'm nowhere near the level of the VFX guys, mostly becuase I do not specialise in one area like they do or have render farms or for the majority of the time have other people contributing to my work, even though I could do aspects of work that could be used in a VFX or TVFX industry, it would be corrupt to say I'm at that level, even though I technically could depending on the shot in question.

You on the other hand seem happy to draw upon the eliteness of the role, without actually being able to do the FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT of what most people define a VFX artist as doing.

If I program contact php forms, it doesn't make me john carmack, but it does make me a programmer.

if I design flash games, it makes me a game designer, but it doesn't make me Miyamoto.

If you do 2D work for VFX, it makes you a VFX artist, but it doesn't make you what 9/10 think you are.

That's my point. its not to say you're not talented or play an important role, I'm simply saying if you're going to try and bag the job title of VFX Artist, you should be able to do the fundamental aspect of what it entails for most people.

aren't there distinct specializations between 3D modelling and skinning of said models? would you normally want someone doing both? would someone making 2D art that's projected in 3D be considered as '3D artist'? is the term '3d artist' even used internally in the industry?

There's loads of sections lighters, riggers modellers, fur, cloth, fx.. on an a big film like let's say gollum in lord of the rings. It'll have about 15 diff 3d artists doing a small part :) that's why I laugh at jamerios 3D is a vfx artist, but if he knew anything about it he'd know vfx artists go down as low as a matchmover/roto artist because ultimately they all do fx on a film:( but bafta boy knows best

I know about all the roles thanks, and I know that it all counts toward the final image quality, what I'm saying is, per frame, certain roles have a bigger impact than the others.

You can't seem to acknowledge that becuase you know yours is one of the smaller least impressive/technical roles. So you would rather focus on the team aspect of it all. Surprised you didn't mention the tea lady to boost your plight. "She makes good tea and makes work better!"

You want to be held in the same regard as a striker but you're a goal keeper and you'll never ever get the same recognition as someone whose out their moving the crowd.

you mention fur, but the look of fur is wasted without a good, textured, animated, rendered model and a lot of that stuff is particles/physics based so isn't that difficult. At a push, its easier for the 3D modeler to learn fur than it is for the fur guy to learn 3d modeling to that degree.

So someone who does fur ISN'T in the same league as the people who MODELED/TEXTURED/RENDERED the thing.
I have done fur, cloth, water, (not to VFX level, but enough to know its not as hard as some of the other disciples) I know how this shit works, a VFX 3D modeller could do it all with little training.

You seem to want to split it even stevens and I'm saying for a fact that when people come out of the cinema, they appreciate things like fur/cloth, but 9/10 if that stuff was not there to such a high degree, they would still think the shot looked amazing because every image has a base quality to it before you start obsessing.

OK THEN.... I tested GoldeEye 64 so I am as important as anyone on that dev team because my observations made the game better and some of suggestions made the final game.

It doesn't work that way and nor should it.

I'm not trivialising anyone's work in 3DFX as they are all talented and passionate, but you HAVE to accept that while its a team effort, there are people within the team that make the core magic happen more than others.

Good to see Michael Fassbender nabbing role after role lately. Has the intensity that otherwise virtuoso Ewan McGregor lacks. 2012=his year.

I agree, I thought his casting as Magneto was excellent in first class, having a tri-lingual actor was perfect for that role - shame the rest of the movie was shit.

Good obs, yea the rest of First Class kinda jumbled, but he really stood out in terms of intensity and character authenticity. Only X-Man that breaks free of the comic book, 2D flatness imho.

there are so many riddles. the planet scenes in the trailer doesnt look like the old planet in the 1979 movie. so the more we try to analyse details more riddles will surface. i think thats the trick for the promotion.

hopefully we experience where aliens and the ship is come from " whats it all about" as ridley scott said in another trailer. there are pics/scenes with a huge steel human faces in the alien ship. that must be important. its strange and makes no sense right now. maybe there is a connection with aliens and humans. and we see no eggs in the ship only these containers. i wanna know whats with the space jockey/pilot and his seat :>

not sure if the reboot of the series can win. i guess younger people are not into alien. its a movie that i will watch for sure, but i have no high hopes for the quality. the outcome could be negativ like the new star wars trilogy. we have riddles and dreams that are unanswered, that helps for imaginations, especially in our chidlhood. but when somebody try to solve all and give new pictures it destroys the old imagenery.

If that's true then that makes me far happier. I don't see much room for escape from the plot elements shown in the trailer and hinted at in interviews like Charlize Theron's though.

Jon Spaihts only previous work is The Darkest Hour, which was utter trash, and Damon Lindelof wrote some LOST episodes.

Both are terrible writers and it shows in the movie. It's beautiful, but besides visual, everything else just falls apart.

Just got back from seeing it and all I can say is HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT.

Some nice touches, but a mediocre pile of shit overall and I wanted this to be so good aswell. In fact I'm gob smacked at how sterile it was.

It's not crap, it's mediocre and people were expecting greatness. If Ridley Scott had had the sense to get good writers it might even have been good, everything else worked in my view, let down by terrible characters and a muddled plot.

Having read the Space Jesus theory which makes a disturbing amount of sense I think I'm shifting from 'mediocre following high expectations' to festering pool of puss. At least your early and rather clever predictions were incorrect with the film deliberately playing on those expectations.

It's not a theory, it's stated fact - he confirmed the link and the reasons for pulling it in a recent interview. Just do some digging, there are plenty of sites covering the farce. AvP Galaxy's forums are a good place to start.

Yeah, I've read around it a little more now and thinking back some of the scenes are clearly intended to fit that concept- the Captain's bizarre preoccupation with Christmas and David's washing of Weyland's feet.

He needed someone who could do sci-fi, Duncan Jones maybe. Prometheus is to sci-fi as if someone created a fantasy movie with a tall, skinny person with a cardboard sign on them saying 'hobbit' and then said 'fuck hobbits anyway'.

That's the one - if he'd seen through the original script, I'd at least respected him for trying to piss everyone off. Instead, he wrote a script, chickened out, and ended up with a story about nothing, with some pretty effects but nothing worth taking home. It's not even got scary creatures, which is what the IP was all about. Piece of shit.

The imagery was beautiful and most of the scenes had an eerie quality to them.

I think the point in the movie is in the classic sci-fi and psychoanalytical references : it questions being a mother, being a creator and being the created, it questions our relation with god(s). This was a way better movie than all the superhero crap nowadays or Avatar and modern sci-fi on a whole.

I dunno where you get your info, but I am holding out hope.

How do you know they were never filmed? The director's cut of Alien had 20 extra minutes (and that whole movie was fairly low budget) and these days studios love releasing multiple editions of the DVD/bluray. They first sell the standard theatrical right before Christmas. Then they'll sell the director's cut 3 months later. Then they'll sell an "ultimate collector's edition" which comes in a cheap plastic alien skull or something like that.

Just dig around - there were plenty of sites keeping tabs on interview comments and tv feature information. AvP Galaxy's forums are a good place to start.

What is your source for the information about that spoiler scene? Knowing that theory makes me hate the film and writers. I was already aware of that theory but not of any scene that directly addressed it.

And in the movie, when during the initial briefing in the spaceship they mention mankind might have been created by aliens, the biologist goes "what? we're suddenly throwing 300 years of Darwinism out of the window?" (or something along those lines). I don't think ANY scientist, and certainly no biologist, would call evolution "darwinism". That's a word creationists tend to use.

I think the more you expected an A-movie from a B-movie franchise, the more you were disappointed.

I expected a decent film from the director who did Alien, Bladerunner and Gladiator. I got Lost's rejected scripts about Space Jesus.

Who also did Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood, Hannibal, Matchstick Men, etc...Seems to me that Ridley Scott is getting more credit than due. I'm probably one of the few people that thought Gladiator was overrated.

Alien was good for its time since it was, as far as I'm aware, one of the very first horror sci-fi films but was hardly epic in terms of dialogue or story. It was interesting because of the setting, the special effects and the way it was edited. Blade Runner, while aesthetically cool, is hardly an amazing film (dialogue is often pretty campy and had some campy moments throughout). They barely followed PKD's classic story. Personally, when I look at Scott's career, most of his films are popular based on the aesthetics and action rather than on dialogue or story.

Just for those people who wonder who I consider grade-A movie directors: Scoresese, Fincher, Paul Thomas Anderson, later Aronofsky, and the Coen brothers.

I went in to Prometheus expecting a high production value B-movie in the sci-fi genre. That's exactly what it was.

If B-movie was all you got out of Alien then no wonder you were not disappointed by Prometheus.

But more onto the point, people get really weird expectations on established (sci-fi/fantasy) franchises. They are meant to be crazy and ridiculous.

I read a lot of comics though and am used to people creating weird story lines. (recently read every alien/predator comic, some awesome stuff in there.)

I saw Prometheus last night and I have to say it's pretty average. I've been looking forward to Prometheus for a long time and I knew it wouldn't have much to do with the alien universe so that aspect has never been a problem to me.

The visuals and everything are of course amazing but the whole film just falls flat having a story that doesn't go anywhere or resolves itself. It felt like there were many people who wrote the story and it becomes a jumbled mess of concepts that have no seemingly obvious links together.

The film's pacing and how it presents you information is out of whack. Things happen then different things happen. I appreciate that they included many different genres into one film but it just feels like several different directors worked on seperate sections of the film without talking to each other then put the results together.

So as a stand alone film it isn't coherent but if you look at it from an Alian prequel point of view it does get worse, many things are contradictory or left unexplained. But from the outside I never had the Alien prequel goggles on anyway.

Anyway, overall it has good visuals, on the whole good acting but pretty much falls flat on everything else.

i think they wanted a not so sympathic android, because otherwise you have this cliche "robot is better, more moral than humans" (AI, i robot, blade runner, sci fi literature). i didnt like android either.

the first alien was about family (ship was the mother) and sexuality. every character was like tolkiens lord of rings, not a full character but togehter you have a full person. so maybe they wanted only facetts of real person. so some motivations of a character are a riddle, not full shown.

on one hand the captain was a sympathicus, the guy from the street, whos doing a decision (ram the spaceship and die). but im not sure if he is believable. for me a captain (ship, plane) is at first a technician.
