I know there are a lot of guys here with great experience in providing online coverage for LAN tournaments. I am organizing a LAN next week and was hoping to provide SOME kind of coverage online but I fear the net connection will be terrible.

What's the minimum speed/bandwidth needed to run a (stable) audio and/or video broadcast?

The download speed is around 7 mb and the uplink is around 256 k at the venue. This won't be dedicated for me either, I'm not sure how many others will try to use it but I'm pretty sure it will be spread thinly. :(

Any help appreciated!

256k upload? I do not know much about streaming but that is hardly enough to run a 360p stream.

it depends on the quality of stream you want, for 96kbs mp3 stream a extra 10kbs upload will be needed for dns lookup and ping etc, and the same goes for the video stream,

when watching or listening for every kbs you do not have on your conenction you needs to add 1 sec to the players buffer

p is just pixel size, it means nothing for mpeg etc, mpeg`s run on k/ps bitrates which doesnt include the bitrate of the audio inside

if you can't do a live stream, try recording live vods then upload them after the event.

I think I'll record all the demos and have at least the key matches turned into videos and possibly have a commentary tied in, then people can see something. It's a shame I can't do it live though. :(

windows media streaming app has the default settings for your connection all sorted if you are no good at maths, and most people do not have media player or can connect to streams so the stream will be better for the handful of viewers

youtube does live streaming, their player will transcode the p size the viewer chooses and will be listed on the main page, as there are only a few live streaming events a week

I've pretty much given up on any kind of live stream, I'll try doing 'UTV' (like GTV) from an online server, apparently I only need around 10kb/s for that. But... I even doubt that will be stable. However, thanks for the replies!

you need the upstream kbs that will cover the mpeg bitrate and audio bitrate, and then you need 10-20kbs spare of upstream to cover random needed packets to keep the connection alive

You mean 10-20% of your inet connection to spare and not only 10-20kbs right? Streams has bursting periods. I stream at 3500 but often it burst up to 4100 and even more.

no, 10-20% of you connection could be 250kbs if you have fibre, need 2kbs for normal ping and dns packets, servers will buffer streams and send and receive a lot of junk thats not really needed, but most apps are free so they sent junk packets

Run a speedtest.net, post image with results. That should clear it up. As someone said is it kb/s or KB/s you're talkin about?
