and bandwidth doesn't really matter for online play - as long as you can run on rate 8000 :D

I know that bandwidth doesn't influence the ping at all but aon couldn't even promise us the 7,2 mbit.

who cares about bandwidth?, UPC uses docsis3, unless they make some serious changes, it's never gonna be any good for gaming:(

rate 8000 is the minimum ql setting, it should amount to either 8kbps or 1 kbps, so even a 128k isdn has enough bandwidth,


I wanted to say the same thing as you, but can you explain that docsis3 thing?

Problems with docsis3 were news to me too, I also learned from svr (and from other sources) about two months ago.(you also read that thread btw)

Docsis3 uses a technique (on the hardware level), which buffers packets from each clients, so your packets wont reach your isp in a steady flow, but instead, several packets will go together in short bursts.

If your isp sells too many connections in a node (in same street/district,etc.), the time between two bursts will increase, and you will warp. Also if your node is not set up properly, too heavy node-trafic can cause that the transmit level of your modem is simply not enough to reach your isp at every try, and you could have packet loss as well.
(The only time I'm not warping is 3am when everybody sleeps, but even then I still shutter a very very little bit, anyway, since last update my routing is also broken, so I would ping 60-70 on de servers, ergo I wont play much QL anymore).
It doesn't matter if you got 15 or 120mbit (max in my country for UPC), you will still shutter/warp.

Some famous starfleet ISPs in the EU are:

- VIRGIN MEDIA (UK).

Interesting, I thought it was just people being retarded or clueless and not turning off all the random shite running in the background, though ISP issues do happen as well obviously.

This "technique" is just terribly retarded though, ISPs should stop pretending they can provide a fast connection to everyone when their network has a clearly insufficient capacity (they do the same in my country though, but they just reduce the download speed rather than use weird "techniques").

yea:( it's simply awful to play with such net. Even when I had 40ms to Germany, because of the unsteady latency, its completely random, I almost nothing hits. My acc is about 15-30% higher offline depending on how good/bad day I got. I forced to go closer in online games and use shotgun instead of rail, and quake without rail is like a girls without boobs:(

Now with 60-80ms, its simply not much fun anymore:) I got tf2 servers in my city where I ping 40 (still LOL, but hey its playable). Its not as good as Quake, but lots of fun games there too, and since source's buffering-netcode smooths out my warp, I don't ruin the fun of others:)
