well, with the way pk was treated by esr im guessing they realized creating the next esport game isnt a great model for success..

pk is a nice sp game, its mp failed because of poor netcode iirc
they made this one console market focused (=joypad gameplay -slow) because pc market is dead, not because pk was this or that

I tried to play through MOH twice and got stuck on the same part twice! There is a level which starts where you run along an armada of enemy mg's and simply die every time....

I have no idea why programmers would do something like that, it annoyed the fuck out af me at the time.


But maybe that's just me, I didn't finish a lot of games that annoyed me because they didn't have a sensible skill curve, like Dungeon Keeper 1+2 Heroes of might and magic 2 + 3... the list goes on forever

If you're talking about MOH - Pacific Assault then it sounds like the Tarawa mission where you have to fend off the Japanese while heading towards the beach. There's a scripted path from the wooden bridge onto the beach past the obstacles. Until then, you just have to take cover behind the boats and sometimes, the obstacles.

Anyone who has played Quake mostly dumps other games coz of lack of speed and because the other games just feel way too easy with spray and pray. You cannot be blamed for it :) I do enjoy war games a lot or even sniping games like Sniper Elite or Sniper:Ghost warrior but I often need to take a break to play something fast like Quake or I simply lose interest.

thatīs what annoys me about scripted games, either you do what it tells you to or you donīt beat the game. little freedom to play a bit more creative like in, well, quake, or even make a speedrun.

Partly because it kept being likened to Doom/Duke Nukem/Quake and it played nothing like them...

Only for the basic gameplay simplicity. Seems like modern shooters lost sight of what made their predecessors so fun to play.

SS (and PK) and to be honest, most console shooters are even more basic than the "Doom" model though. Doom isn't a corridor shooter and neither is it a "kill all the bad guys" shooter.

Prey, for example could be summed up like this:

=[ Puzzle/Enemy ]==[ Puzzle/Enemy ]==[ Puzzle/Enemy ]==[ Puzzle/Enemy ]===[ Boss]

Yeah, but apparently newschool devs figure that the more gimmicks you stuff in your shooter, the more "deeper" and "immersive" it is. Then you get abominations like Timeshift. Meh.

Actually i think you're dead right on the money there. Most of the shit you're forced to do in new games feels unnecessary and detracting from the experience. I absolutely loathe the SUPA KEWL physics puzzles in the vein of stack crates to reach button to drop brick on another button so gate opens. When i think of gimmicks in fps games i invariably fall back to the tasteful (hurr hurr) kind of Duke 3D, Blood or Shogo. Good examples of how not to bog down your game with annoying bullshit.

Tho Prey was fun, up until the point it ran out of crazy stuff to throw in your face.

fear 2 is the only game that really gave me a few jitters, loved it, try that it's a great SP

or, if you can do without shooting, play the penumbra games and amnesia.

I think games like FEAR were just ignored by the majority. It had tournament potential and had a standalone FREE multiplayer.

We still have those rare LAN sessions at work, along with Quake where we relish this old gem.

i would like to see a game where you just kind of explore some really cool environments rather than shoot monsters over and over like a one man army. ive always had more fun exploring in games than shooting shit. looks like a cool game though i really enjoyed painkiller

Exactly, it's whats keeps pushing me to play fps games still.

IT started back with the original unreal, even primitive as it would be considered now it was awesome to play that game single player, i felt like just walking around!

I'd like a game like fallout 3 with more focus on exploring. maybe even incorporate some puzzle solving and more adventure like gameplay.

but I enjoyed exploring that world a lot, but was a bit bummed that it didn't really give you anything.

I do think that kind of sandbox gameplay is the way forward for fps games.

(oh, and a tip for you: the penumbra series. no shooting, fps and a good story which grabs you and makes you wanna play the game through)
