I know if etc strenx wins, 2nd place gets spot and so on, but seeds will give some players advantage.

I don't know why you all consider noctis "magical" etc. He's never been best at duels, all he did is randomly win one online tourney without strong opponents.
Look at his performance @ IEM Europe. He easily lost to fox & stermy and couldn't get pass his group. That's what his real duel level is.

what about finishing third @ dubai and winning an epic bo5 vs cooller?

First of all, in Dubai noctis barely got out from his group from 2-nd place. Just a bit more luck for fazz in final seconds of dm6, and noctis wouldn't be in playoffs at all.
Then was a game vs cooller. It wasn't really a "bo5" because cooller haven't practiced t7 and t9 at all by then, so he lost on them by default. Basically there were only three "real" maps of which noctis needed to win only one, and he barely managed to do even that. And, well, cooller definitely wasn't best player in Dubai, so beating him doesn't make you anything special.
And then remember how badly rapha raped noctis after that, it was pitiful to watch. Certainly he didn't show any of his "magic" there.
And finally, the game for 3-rd place. It's a game that most players never take seriously (for example, at IEM World, cypher and av3k wanted just to flip a coin or something instead of playing), so it's not a reliable measure of player performance.
Noctis is definitely very good, but to me he seems more like "5th-8th place" player, rather than serious contender for top3.

What do you find there wrong?
There are around 4 players that I think are surely better than noctis, and several that are at least about even with him. If some of them won't play or be out of shape and the tourney is online (i.e. brings many random factors), he might win. If tourney is on LAN and all of them play and in top shape, he'll get 2 of them in his group and won't progress further. And his true level is somewhere between these extremes.

first you say that not getting out of group is his "real duel" level". You did not mark it as an extreme then, as you do now.
And in the next post you say he is a 5th-8th place finisher.

But from this latest comment, I can at least tell that you do see the contradiction there.


So, with your two latest comments you position has become less extreme and much more agreeable.

He's not been out of touch with the game, unlike dahang and there's no way for anyone to tell if he hasn't been playing too many duel games unless people have kept tabs on his QL stats.

So as far as changes in the game are concerned, he should be familiar with them already. His item timing is perfect as you'd have noticed in his TDM games so that area is covered as well. I just think duel needs more nerves than TDM and given his aim and timing and overall game sense, I wouldn't ever doubt his chances to upset any other player in the scene today.

But apart from beating cooller at Dubai, were there actually any other upsets by noctis ever?

upset is such a relative term.

For every random online hero, beating av3k, killsen, fox, cooller and spartie would be quite the upset.
For rapha not even winning a tournament without dropping a match would be a an upset.
