it doesnt really matter if you have a 750w power supply or 500w. In both cases, it only takes as much power as the components need.

There is still a waste which relates to the amount of watt it can supply. If he uses a 1k watt unit, and it only needs 300watt, the it will be less efficient than a 350 watt unit.

The article doesnt focus exclusively on it, but there was an articel on perhaps xbitlabs, about the performance between a 1000watt psu and a 3-500 watt psu, in a system where the requirements weren't more than a few hundred watt. The conlusion was that if they were far from 50-75% load they didnt perform as good.

ATX specification states that the power supply must have an efficiency of 65% at a load of 20%.
On the other hand switching power supplies have a non-linear efficiency curve, I think to get 80plus certification it has to have 80% efficiency at 20% load and it drops very quickly below that.

Since we are talking percentages here let's do some math to demonstrate where his claim is probably coming from:

a) Let's say your components use 100 watt idle on the 16amp rail (simplified, but for the sake of the argument). You are using a 300 watt switching power supply.
-> You are at a load of 33% percent. If 80plus certified you are now at an efficiency of a bit over 80%.

100watt / 0.8 = 125 Watts your are pulling from your evil power supplier.

b) 100 watt idle but 1000 watt power supply.
-> Load of 10%. Your efficiency is now alot lower, let's use the graph from up there: 73%.

100watt / 0.73 = 136 watts youre are pulling from your supplier. That is about 10% more and of course this number gets even higher with lower idle percentage values (something quite common, my HTPC uses about 40watts idle when the harddrive is spun down).

sweet, I got a few q6600's and that CPU is the same speed as 2xquadcore q6600's at number crunching so I'll be making the upgrade pretty soon. I only use them for rendering.

I can confirm you made a good choice but so you should for about a £1000 worth of hardware:)

I think the CPU is just over 200, which is fine and not a bad deal.

The problem is the DDR 3 RAM and the X58 MOTHERBAORD make it an unsavoury investment. at the moment as you're looking at £320 ish JUST for a mobo and 3 gig of ram that would buy a complete q6600 PC and a HD4850 if bought a second hand GPU. I just can't quite get my head around that atm.

That should come down to just over 200 pound in the next 3-4 months. so sell your shit now, bank the money and then upgrade.

While everyone is talking about power does anyone have a rough idea how much it costs to keep a pc running for 24 hours solid?

I know you can measure it accurately by finding out how much you pay per watt or whatever, but I don't know that neither do I have one of those devices that measure drawn current.

But rough sort of estimates for a mid range gaming pc and tft?
Can be country specific whatever, I'm real curious.

A lot of places have done just general tests. The 'average' rig, if you were to leave it on 24/7 for a year, would cost you $100-$120 a year extra for your power bill.

I mean, that's only $10 a month, and I'm sure if you're THAT strapped for cash, just put it in sleep mode.

I could do the math for you, but, hopefully you're happy with that answer.

I can't belive its that cheap, not in the UK at least.

I have about 6 quadcore pc's BTW which are often left on at 100% load for 3-4 days at a time. When you start paying your own electric in the most over priced country in the biggest recession for 100 yrs you will care:)

lets say your psu consumes 500 Watt, which depending on the efficiency would mean around 400 Watt (best atm reach 90% efficiency accordig to: http://www.anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/show...52&p=7)

500 Watt every hour mean 12 kWh / day, and 4380 kWh / year.

cba to look up British prices but I pay around 18 cents per kWh.

so that gives: 788 € per yer or 70€ per month.

So either engery is really really cahep in Canada Gillz mixed somethin up. Maybe it ws a calculation of gaming rig vs. "normal" rig-

Assuming about 7cents/kWh, using your information...

That's about $300/year, $25 a month, running it 24/7 at 90% load (Which is what you put it as)

My power supply is only a 450, but I doubt I'm using that much 24/7,
maybe about 250-300 Watts. That would bring me down to about 7kWh/day, which is 2555kWh/year.

Which is $178 a year, $14 a month.

(Keep in mind this is CDN dollars)

you bought asus and corsair, who basically charge you 30% extra for their name

you are unaware that raid 0 especially on a software raid controller will not increase performance at all on applications that dont rely purely on moving huge amounts of data consistently. for example: about EVERY application you'll ever use

you actually did a gfx card upgrade to one of the last 55nm cards, a process that's 2 years old, while major 40nm cards including a gt200 upgrade and the gt300 will come out this year and easily outperform your dual card solution while sucking about 1/3 the juice

your new 2000$ pc does 960fps in q3 while my 600$ pc did the same 1 year ago

I dual boot Vista ultimate 64 and xp pro 32. I can side by side compare them in any way you'd like.

Some obvious advantages of Vista, though. I had a friend with Vista as his primary OS. He changed motherboards, and didn't have to reformat. It was a different model of motherboard entirely (680 Asus Striker Extreme to an evga 780i)
