I've been thinking that in my spare time, I should start learning a language. The only problem is that I want to learn about 6+ and honestly do not know where to start. This is why I am here.

The key languages I want to learn first are: Russian, German, Italian, Arabic, Hindi and Esperanto.

Any ideas..?

Supposedly esperanto is a good starting language, however if you can't find lessons for that (And I really recommend doing lessons) I would do Italian (I have just done Italian lessons for about a year) it's quite easy, and will help you get into the mode for the other languages.

Oh and my target is also about 7 or 8 languages (I'm on 3 atm) but be prepared to spend 20 years on the project, especially if you are working full time, and you NEED to take classes, home study does not work.

For fun? I like languages, it opens you to a whole new world of thinking and culture. I especially find slavic languages interesting, but I only know a few words and verbs in Polish and Slovak.

So i actually took my 40 favorite ones and made a DinA2 poster our of them. You just have to look at a few more in a row to find them funny.

English might be the easiest but you probably have that one covered already. French and German have a more diverse grammar. Not sure about Italian and Spanish but at least Spanish has easy pronounciation (more or less exactly how it's spelled), and once you got a few of those languages done the others will probably be fairly easy. Russian might be interesting as that's a part of the world where English is not yet as common as in say Western Europe. No one speaks Esperanto and Chinese is probably just too difficult and not much use.

not gonna pull a ruskies-in-georgia-but-where?-stunt but I just went outside, and 1st person was not chinese, 2nd person was not chinese, 3rd, 4th and 5th were not chinese either.. so where are all the chinese??? probably in china, and by china I mean somewhere in eastern china aka nowhere you'll ever get close to. besides, don't they have a ridiculous amount of like 120+ dialects that can't be understood very well or at all by each other?

2) plenty of asians in Germany
3) still doesn't mean you have to speak mandarin to communicate with them, as they will most likely speak english if they want to deal with foreigners or move abroad, and that is overall much less effort than for foreigners to learn mandarin

the exact opposite happened to me.

I was skying in France and had a little accident and was bleeding from a cut at my forehead (that broomstick got it worse :<) and went to the information desk to ask for the way to a doctor.
I asked in French (which isn't great but good enough) and the girl there did understand me. But instead of replying in French she tried to speak English and ended up asking someone else "Qu'est-ce qu'on dit pour pont et gauche en Anglais". So I told her "bridge and left and now please tell me".

And I know other examples where French people refused to speak French to foreigners even though their English and/or German is worse than the foreigner 's French, e.g. my mother who lived there for a year...

it says there that mandarin is spoken by arund 850 million people.
And from what i know from people who leardned Chinese is that it's a lot tougher to do for a European than to learn French and Spanish combined. and those add up to 1,1 billion speakers (minus those that speak both of/course)

whoops the links were misleading in some points (typical wiki I guess...)

cause where I looked it said 1.2 billion total in chinese and of that 850 million mandarin. But they also had 500 million for French so I firgured it couldn't be native speakers...

And no not all Chinese learn mandarin, some German Chinese I know had problems understanding the Chinese at the World Cup in Macao.

Also, afiar "ma" also means "lame" (handicapped) and "to insult"

That's just getting picky. 500million first language French speakers is probably too high but with the Ivory Coast it does seem to be the language that everyone speaks and has to learn so I think it's fair to call that native (In the same way English is native to Welsh/Scottish).

I've no idea why I'm typing any of this. Anyway I think I'm agreeing with you on English/French/Spanish being more useful than Chinese and easier to learn so........

spanish and chinese are your best bets after english unless you have a specialized interest in another part of the world. they're the most widely spoken languages in the world. if you speak all three, you can communicate with most of the world. this is firsthand experience. professionally, i am a linguist. i speak those three as well as two other romance languages.

again, if you have a specific interest, the other languages you mentioned aren't a bad start, other than esperanto which has always been useless.

I already know Spanish and English so I guess I'd have to go for Mandarin if I followed your advise. Although, Mandarin hasn't really appealed to me. Have more interest in Japanese heh.

I think at the end I'm going to start with Russian first. The Cyrillic alphabet has always got my attention, second will probably be an Indo-Aryan language.

maybe start with one that can give you an easy base to learn the other languages. trouble is, none of them are really related, lol. I'd start with German, because its also a Germanic language (like english). Then from there (if you're interested) you can easily pick up swedish, norweigan, dutch etc.

Italian and russian are super cool too though.

Following that theory, my choices would be Italian and German.

As of now it's basically between Russian, German or Arabic. I sort of like the idea of learning a whole new alphabet and letters aka cyrillic.

Don't start with German it's grammar makes it one of the harder languages to learn. Even though knowing English helps a little with the vocabulary.

Learn Russian. It's relatively easy, has pretty much the same verb conjunctions as Spanish, and grammatically not very fussy. Getting used to the declension system is probably the hardest part after learning the alphabet, which isn't too bad either. Plus Russia has awesome poets and novelists and hot women %D

dont bother with hindi. afaik it doesnt particularly have any interesting literature. and even if u intend to spend long periods of time in north india u can get by on english. so total waste of time.

learn a cool language like finnish or swedish. other than that theres really no point in learning anything but english and spanish or if you absolutely need it, chinese.

pick one from each "main" language groups(slavic germanic, romanice, Chinese, Uralic, etc..) then see what u like?:)
maybe start with russian since u said ure interested in cyrillic
