Hey o/

A few of you may have seen my earlier journals about me moving to Sweden to study in Linkoping. Well It's all set and I leave Aus on monday. I'm travelling around Europe first with a few friends then going to Swe on the 14th of August.

I'm just after like a few phrases, stuff like
how are you
my name is mike, what is yours
I'm Australian

etc :p

I'm listening to myself try a few phrases and I think I sound kinda German, then again, I don't know what a Swede sounds like - never met a guy Swede only a few girls.

So yeah, any help would be grand! Also, when I pronounce Linkoping, the 'koping' part is meant to sound abit like 'cherping'? No idea, I'll probably sound like a douche for abit.

I also must say I'm very excited to be living in Sweden, theres alot happening in your country that I'm interested about. Especially the proposed internet surveillance law. Politically Swe seems like a really interesting country. Maybe it's just me looking in from the outside, but I'm looking for to being there none the less.

The "cherping" is on the right track. Just take out the 'r' and you pretty much got it. It's not perfect, but it'll due.

How are you? = "Hur m�r du?"
"M�r" sounds kinda like "moar", best thing I can come up with now. =) And "du" is prenouced like "duud" without the 'd' at the end.

My name is penis, what is yours? = "Jag heter snopp, vad heter du?" or "Mitt namn �r snopp, vad �r ditt?"
You may use both, but please call yourself something other than "snopp", or do, you decide. =D

I'm Austrailian. = "Jag kommer fr�n Australien"
I have to come up with something later that sounds like "fr�n".

Only got about a minute or so, but here's a few sentences, maybe someone can

- Hej, Jag heter Mike, vad heter du? (Hi, my name is Mike, whats your name?)
- Hur m�s det? (How ya doin?)
- Jag �r fr�n Australien! (I'm from Australia).
- Ska vi ta en drink? (Wanna go for a drink?)
- Ska vi luncha? (Wanna go for lunch?). In this case you can also use "Fika", which isnt really a lunch but more like going for a cup of coffee or something..
- Vart finns toaletten? (Wheres the toilet?)
- F�r jag ringa dig n�gon g�ng? (Can i call you sometime?)

Cherping sounds about right, but remember that the K is pronounced like the "sh" in "hush" in this case.

Try this little guide, it'll teach you some pronunciaton basics with audio. Also comes in with some basic stuff IIRC :

There's two ways of saying "sj" depending on where in Sweden our teacher told us. One way is at the front of your mouth, and the other is from the throat more. Most kids in our class preferred first way as it sounds closer to "shoe" in english, where as the more common way... Forget about trying to explain it with english words :)

OMG the best one ever was when we had to read out loud this story about "G�teborgs sk�rg�rd"!!

The class failed miserably again and again t'was pretty funny stuff.

Just pronouncing the title as an English speaker probably would:

Obviously Swedish students know how to pronounce the second biggest city but that didn't mean they could say 'sk�rg�rd' to save their lives and it was in the article like 6 more times.

Ahahahahaa, I went to a julfest at the American Swedish Institute last winter and they taught us that song forced us to form a chain holding hands and we sung that while walking all around the castle for what felt like 20 minutes but was probably only 6. I guess that was the price to pay for having so much nice free food to eat. =)

cool do you learn swedish in MN? i just moved from sweden to MN.

and sju is pronounced with the same sound as SK�rg�rd.
if you pronounce it with a SHoe sound, you will sound like a retard who cant form your moth properly.
but thats not that the hard part, most people cant say the U sound properly.

edit: was gonna go to the swedish institute the other day, but some other plans got in its way. is it worth a visit?

and sm� grodorna isnt anything we swedes are proud of, at all....

About ASI:
It's only 6 dollars for adults to visit.
When we were being drug around singing the frog song I saw lots of stuff there I wouldn't have minded checking out. I want to go back sometime.

Yeah, Swedish is offered at the University of Minnesota. I've taken two semesters. I actually needed those two to graduate since I didn't take a language for long enough in high school. Now I'm taking another year of Swedish just for fun. So far that's all they offer.

Not off the top of my head, but we have really bad privacy protection at the U so I am going to log into the class website and see if I find her. (lol the term has not started and I can still do this.)

There are two sections of Swedish, one's during the day 5 days a week and then another is a night class. She must have been in the night class.

Oh wait!! yes I do know a Natalie from first semester. Ask her if there was a kid from her Swedish class last fall that could juggle. She'll probably freak out. Her last name starts with a C.

I was in the night section last fall which sucks for language learning so I switched to the day time one. I had to take it this semester though so if she's continuing on we'll be in the same class again.
