Only bds could have gathered all the best players demo and make a movie out of it. And a good movie also! 'Cause this is 10min of pleasure, only the best players and the best frags that has been done. Maybe you miss few but, hey, you can't have them all. 250mb of pure pleasure!

This movie was well made, yes. But CS is not an impressive game to watch, I wasn't even slightly impressed by any frag in this movie, though I've been impressed by every qw/q3/ut movie I've ever watched.

How could I compress it more if I want 800x600 resolution, 22KHz/16bit/stereo audio, Divx encoding to the level where I find the picture really nice to watch.

well, to start with you could have compressed the sound, which would have reduced the sound segment of the movie from aprox 50meg to 5meg or so, check out www.virtualdub.com and use it together with some nice mp3 codec like lame or fraunhofer

Like I said I wanted 22KHz/16bit/stereo audio. With more compression I had a movie with the size of 213 MB (224 356 536 bytes) and in my oppinion those extra MB's to get nicer audio quality is worth it.

the 3:30 min audio track in my video was in 44khz quality with stereo @ 160 kbps in a fraunhofer mp3 codec
it took approx. 5 mb

First of all, don't use 800x600. This is crap. 640x480 is crap enough. More than that is just unbelieveable. See, more important than pixel resolution is image smoothness. When you're at 30fps+, being 640x480 or 800x600 almost doesn't make any difference. And plus, the bigger the image, the harder it is to the pc to decompress is. An 800x600 divx video will only run smoothly on REAL top-notch computers.

You should also use nandub (did you?) and use a good codec (not sure on what you used, but mind you, divx3 + sbc is still the best compression/quality).

Look, full DIVX videos at a good resolution can be compressed at a 650mb file with almost 2hrs of footage. There's no reason a video with 10min should take almost half of it. Even if you prefer to use ultra-quality, that doesn't make any sence to use 640x480+. Even on professional video presentations (shows, expos) you won't find people using a resolution as high as that.

When you do, at least release a smaller, 512x384 version. I think it's the best for fps videos. I'll be the one downloading it for sure, as many people 'round here. Quality is not only about 2d pixels but also about time. And I can sure say that with this big size I won't get a decent framerate from the video.

Again, I say this wil all the respect. I know the difficulty of doing such kind of videos. But simply outputting it from premiere or some such program using some sloopy codec without proper encoding processes isn't the best of efforts to guarantee an easy and painless distribution of the video.

I'll look into the resolution issue. The thing is that you get better a much better view of the frags with a higher resolution. Its not only that the resolution is higher, but HUD, crosshair etc gets smaller. For example using a resolution below 640x480 in CS makes the awp crosshair really ugly, and I dont want that.

And I sure know that you can compress movies etc alot more, but this was what I wanted to release. I played around loads with codecs, but I guess I am spoiled with really quality (and size).

And sloppy codec, 2-pass filtering with Divx isnt that sloppy to me. And I want high quality sound, cause I think it does alot.

But I am gonna try 640x480 and see if I like it enough. Thanks for the input.

What I meant as sloopy was outputting from premiere or after effects directly into divx, it was just an example of how 90% of the q3/cs/etc videos are done today, it wasn't precisely your case because as I said, I am still downloading the video.

Doing two-pass divx, sbc encoding is not sloopy.

This is no whine and whine. Making movies better and at lower sizes would help everyone. Or do you prefer that each time a movie is released it kills 10 downloads sites on a day?

I don't have a crappy connection. No one is forcing me do download the video but I'm still doing it. But that's not the reason any video should be 100gb in size when they can easily be smaller and still maintain the same quality if not higher.

Just off on a tangent, I'll be interested to see whether the divx people will kill divx with this divx 5 fiasco.

divx5 = pay to encode or put up with ads (both terrible ideas)
divx5 = nothing but problems with previous versions

Not to mention whatever bugs there are.

People have now split between 4.12 and 5 - neither of which can play the others videos consistently without fannying around re-installing.

They better do something sharpish or the first half decent thing that starts getting a bit of popularity will kill it dead (which may not be a bad thing).

I used to enjoy these kind of movies, but the latest batch of CS-movies have elicited nothing more than a yawn on my part. I guess it's just really hard to make CS look spectacular.

Very nice movie, even though this kind of epitaph/fatwreck music makes me yawn. Kind of intersting ratings too. I wonder how many of the 1,2,3 voters actually saw the movie. Prejudgment will allways rule i guess. Unlike Q3a, CS and it's gameplay is more like a "beauty in disguise" but some people will never realise this :)

Ok, giving it a 10 is too much i have to admit. there's always room for improvement.
But:
-I really think that this is the best CS movie available atm. Or do you really know a better CS movie?
-Giving it a 1, 2 or 3 is laughable in my humble opinion. Even absolutely horrible games like Deer Hunter get better ratings than 30% in gaming magazines.

I think you rate it as a movie and not as a CS movie. Comparred too other CS movies this is very good but compared with good (not bad, good) Q3 and UT movies this is a 4 tops.

I think it is a great movie and that bds has done a great job. You could discuss wether he used the right codec or the frags in the movie are the best frags ever, but that doesn't matter. bds made the movie, and we should all be thankful for it since he doesn't owe us shit. So please, don't complain and only look at the good stuff the movie has. That is what you get for free from bds!

I have no idea what it might be, I had divx 5 installed (I saw a post about some bugs in divx 5 in this thread) and tried the movie with it first. Sometimes the movie just stops, not the music but the picture just freeze. You don't see anything for like 10 seconds. Then you see some action in 1-2 secs and then break in 10 secs. I tried the attached divx install 4.12(i think) but the same problem was there... anyone suffering from the same thing?

edit: ah stupid me, I just saw in the newspost that it doesn't work with divx 5. Well, then I will just try to delete divx 5 or something - if thats posible.

putting the compression issue aside i think the movie's great from the production point of view but i have to say that as a non-cs player i'm slightly dissapointed that these frags are being billed as the best cs frags in history. the only thing that sets most of the 3 headshots apart from another day when only one head shot would have been hit is luck. I'm sure that good players know how to aim in order to give themselves the best chance of getting multiple head shots but even so, that guy zetor mows down loads of ppl he just holds the aim pretty steady and gets a bit of luck. But if you're looking for the visual impact of just killing lots of ppl in a short space of time, fair enough :)

Is it required to sit still while shooting in CS?

Yes, while in other games the bestest frags are usualy at top speed when you move fast and do flickshots etc, in CS they have reversed this process so the slower you move when you kill someone, the better you are, that is why we see some really cool action in this movie where ppl actually have been sitting still for a while (not even moving their crosshairs, imagine that!!!) and then they get the kill.

If you are not a CS player yourself you cant imagine how hard it is to be that still, it takes a lot of skillz to keep your grubby fingers of the movement buttons.

So if you arent a CS player and dont understand this movie just think of your quake3 movies, but the other way around, if it would have taken no skill in q3 to do a frag, it is verymuch skills in CS to do it, that is why there are no cool airgibs or nice flickshots etc in this movie because because its about SKILL and cool frags when not moving.

God, what a waste of time, i can either watch this in media player, in which case the sound plays fine, but the picture freezes constantly.

Or... I can play it in tha playa, in which case the picture plays sound but i get no sound at all.

If your going to release a film of 250meg, encode it properly.



That aside, half the frags are on full auto and lucky headshots. I would hardly call those the best frags of cs, perhaps the luckiest netcode frags of all time, but then again thats all CS is about.

OK, the movie gets a +1 from my opinnion by starting with "Fear of The Dark".

I won't say my opinnion about the video though because everyone will either a) say I'm whining and I don't understand it and nobody asked me to download it so shutup; or b) complain I'm a q3 player with no cs skills whatsoever so I don't deserve the right to comment.

well, i just wanted to say great job bds. your commitment to the cs community is very honorable. a bit off topic though, some of the nicest kills in the movie were awp quickshots or prim->secondary reactions, both of which nerfed in 1.4 :( some skill out of cs maybe... will most keep playing? yes :)

I play counterstrike for DkH (Deutschlands kranke Horde) and i watched this movie. A lot of the guys are saying that q3 movies are better. But you cant compare these two games to each other. I like quake3 movies better because the graphic looks sweeter and there is alot more action in it. But if you play counterstrike you will love these frags and stop complain about this movie because you know that a lot of these frags are amazing, pulled of by extremly good players. bds did a great job, the movie looks great.

Nice video. Just another one that makes me realize how bad I'm and will always be. I watch it about twice a day and this still make me depress.

Anyway quality was good. Size is a bit strange. One of my m8 made a video with 124*768 resolution (yeah I know.. useless) in divx4.02, it takes 45 mo for 8 minutes 40. Ok sound was mono and lowsampled. We choose a 15 fps.

Whatever, it's a great job and I want more now. But please, next time, make me feel happy : make a vid of the best lamers stuff.

Anyone who's criticizing the video just frankly doesn't understand the skill involved in CS. CS isn't a game where insane reflex is everything. It's more about smart positioning, predicting enemy's location, and working with your teammates. If you think seeing a guy pop out of hiding and nailing some of the best CS players in the world is boring, then why did you even bother downloading a CS video in the first place? Every remotely decent CS player I've talked to appreciated the movie, so it more than fulfilled its intended purpose. If you want to judge a vid as quake movies, go find a quake movie to rant about. This was made for CS players.
