Hello, I recently purchased q3 off steam and I cant, for the life of me, get any decent servers to work. I always get cd key errors or client errors or version errors.... punkbuster was updated and what not and auto downloads are allowed but I can only access like 1/10 servers and its killing me.... if anyone has any ideas of what I can do to remedy this, I would be greatly appreciative. P.S. firewall and all that garbage has been checked its got to be related with mods or maps or client versions or something like that.... thanks in advance.

Start by disabling/uninstalling PB. You're probably going to want to get a real client instead of playing via steam.

Playing via steam is fine, that's how I play.

Launches into CPMA, uses cnq3 and works without any problems.

And yes you've just identified quake's biggest problem in finding new players, way too much shit before you can actually play the game.

I guess another question is what is the community playing? Id like to get into quake but all I ever read about here is the woes of a broken community. Should I suck up the wasted cash and just play Quakelive? or which version is in my best interest as a noob? Thanks for the replies so far.

As far as vQ3 (as in standard Q3) is concerned, i'd definately go with ql as a newbie.

Considering you are Canadian, and most probably playing from Canada, your best bet at the moment would be Quakelive.

www.quakelive.com

It's free and the player pool is rather large compared to all past quakes at the moment.

Besides that, CPMA VQ3 is probably next in the list in Canada. ( but mostly dead now due to Quakelive open beta release ).

As a new player, QL is definitely a better idea to play. Even if you manage to get Q3 running properly, you will likely be quite owned, at least QL has a healthy supply of newbies.

Well thanks very much for all the feedback. I guess I'll just try quake live. I did notice, like cs, the learning curve is quite steep if you dont wanna get your ass handed to you. I have quake 4 too but NO ONE plays that. Crouch sliding was fun though :). I'm worried quake will make my CS worse though as i play with very low sensitivity in CS. 2.0 in game @ 1800 dpi :x and quake i like It high. :P oh well. Woes of a nerd.

if you can find a happy medium you could see a dramatic increase in aim in both games. i remember before i used accel, my aim was ridiculous in cs. but as accel is hard to replicate in cs properly it doesn't work like that anymore :).

your cs sens doesn't sound that low. what maybe 20-30 cm for 360?

low sens works well for quake especially tdm/ctf/ca. some of the best players around are low sens whores.

Haha well funny story is that I used to play with less then half that BUT due to my teammates being generally incompetent I need to be able to turn a round much more then I would like ^__^ but thanks for the advice!
