Eh, overrated in what way? OK, some people think of him as some kind of quake "god" or whatever, when clearly he could be (and was) beaten. I'm not even saying he should be considered the greatest gamer of all time, because in my eyes the great starcraft players are even more amazing in terms of pure skill.

However, he was first truly dominant doom/quake player, the one who won the first huge tournament prize (actually, almost 7 years later, that's still the largest 1v1 FPS tournament prize ever, right?), etc, etc.

The fact that his accomplishments start from doom2 and run strong through the beginning of q1 and q2 bears extra weight because he wasn't following in anyone's path; he forged his own way as the first "pro gamer."

Anyone who saw him destroy the uk quake2 "champion" at the time at Quakeadelica @ M.o.S will surely agree that he was still at the top of his game long after the release of doom2 and quake1, he had a long period of dominance, and yes i do feel many of the gamers ARE too young to know the Quakeworld players, people get older, new games, new faces, cant whine at them, wasnt their choice to be born late and miss out.

Pretty much the same thing goes for thresh when pitted against nearly any other quaker imo. I think the main reason Thresh didn't win was because it wasn't pimped. For example if it has been posted at a site like Shacknews he might very well have won.

That doesn't change that manipulation of the votes looks bad all around. Especially for those that think they are 'helping' their guy doing it. All they accomplished was making a lot of decent people look bad, including Polos.

Well on a global scale, I'm sure one of the csers would win, since there are so many, and because of the anonymous voting which allowed people on sogamed, gotfrag, schroet, etc. to vote when they were urged on by their website.

Esreality however is mostly made up of quakers, and in my estimation, the quakers would generally win, so I guess there would be some bias to if it was only us that could vote (like it has been changed to).

However, we, the registered users of ESR are the ones who run this site, so fu** everyone else, we should have been the only ones who should have been able to vote from beginning. The poll is already ruined for "ESR users". In final, thresh is rulez.

I think that the users of this site has shown that they will not vote for their game. Boxer won huge over Blue, with the majority of the registered users agreeing Boxer was the better gamer. Mr Pacman beat the old quaker Xenon.

If anything I would say they have been the group least colored by "my game/country must win" this far.

As this Pacman dude apparently is really hot and an inspiration among gamers I'd really like to know more. I mean for me, and I even should be the right generation, pacman has always been an extremely boring game played ages ago on silly TV-consoles but it seems that I may have to reevaluate my opinion. I would think there are not all that many machines left these days. I suspect you have to travel to specialist arcades to find one. I would imagine live head-to-head competition these days is pretty much non existant.

I think much of the competition these days is for records. Our beloved Mr Pacman was offering up money for records earlier. I can imagine competing for those rewards is the big thing in that "scene".

The poll from now on is a farce anyhows so im not gonna bother voting anymore (yer i know nobody cares)
If this rule of registerd votes only would have bin implemented in the first place Thresh would have beaten Polosity 75% to 25% easy keep that in mind.
Oh and if you had removed all the illegal votes (not just the double votes) but also the redialer proxy votes Thresh would have won easy too.

Thresh's influence was without any doubt much bigger than Polosatiy's so he should have won, period.
Hey, Polos contributed a lot to the quake scene. (I remember watching back on q2 days a demo of him doing some q2dm1 trickjumps). He was a very skilled player and runs a nice esports website but you have to weight the acomplishments of each one.

It is all about the GREATEST GAMER and not who has done more to a particular scene.
It is about results. It is about greatness.
Thresh's influence was not in only one particular scene.
He pretty much invented the efficient way of playing duels.
Polos prolly made more things when he was not dueling, that does not make him the greatest gamer
Maybe he is one of the most active gamers, who has done stuff for the community, but that is not really the point of this poll.

i only play q3 & wc3, but still, i hope Boxer will win it. i dont care what nationality he is, same with the game he's playing. the fact is : starcraft is certainly the most competitive game ever. the high level of competition in korea has no equal. boxer is the greatest gamer, imo. he is a legend, and is still active. in addition to that, he is still among the bests (Nada, etc.). as im concerned, GitzZz is the only one left who could pretend to beat him here. but unfortunalty, polls already showed me how unfair it will be anyway. Ummm, okay first of all, ripping apart that anonymous guy was absolutely uncalled for unless there are some restriction for registration I'm unaware of. Here's a thought: he could register and vote. Second, I *do* believe a vote by someone who knows both players means more than a fanboy who voted because his idolized clan told him to. However, everyone is biased anyway. Boxer beating Blue isn't any proof to contradict this. Boxer is practically the Michael Jordan of Starcraft. cyberfight themselves did not screw this vote, they tryed to, but actual screwing of this vote could only be proven by interviewing everyone who voted and asking them on a lie detecter who they really think is the best gamer.

Obviously the admin(s) noticed something was wrong with the votes, if everything worked OK then why change it? So here we have a joke of a "competition" but atleast it will be fair from now on.

Correcting this bug/error or whatever, which allowed anonymous to vote in the poll, is good but too late as most people also say. In order for this "competition" to get back on track would be to restart the whole thing, now that anonymous voting is not allowed, but we all know that this aint gonna happen.

But hey we all learn from our mistakes, lets hope ESR does too..

"Greatest" isn't measurable, everyone takes different aspects into consideration and weights them differently, thats why you make a poll in the first place. Assuming a significant amount of russians didn't understand what this poll is about is just ridiculous ("greatest gamer of all times" - really complicated bit of english). Other claims you make (i.e. "nationalism", "don't know thresh", "isolated gaming scene") are totally irrelevant for the legitimacy of the vote (like you can't legitimately vote bush if you don't know kerry).

The only problem is giving more than one vote, but afaik this didn't change the outcome.

There are only 2 points that i see where you or anybody else could try to argue, the first is that russians who voted didn't know what this poll was all about and the 2nd is "multiple votes" (which can be cleared up by rufus). The first point is just wrong (check cyberfight - they even linked an article about thresh written in russian which is about 30 times as long as the one presented in this poll).

I took the time to count the registred votes on the first 25 pages of votes in the Thresh vs Polosatiy match. Thats 1000 votes out of the total ~4500. Of those 1000 votes, 103 were from registred users. Those 103 votes came up 79-24, about 77% in favor of Thresh. When I first saw the matchups i though Thresh would win this one with about 75-80%, guess I was right...

Oh well, this "event" is now a huge joke and either change its title or... Hey whatever, I just stopped caring...

People who are registered on this site are generally in the know when it comes to gaming. Making it registered voters only doesn't stop people from creating an account and voting for mother russia, but it will prevent a majority of them. The majority of anon users don't really care about the vote and are only voting for their country. These same people are a lot less likely to put in the time to create an account because of the fact they just don't care. It isn't a 100% solution, but it certainly cuts down the number of people who don't really care from voting.

So thresh is out, big deal. The admins made a correct move introducing the logged in voting, and keeping the results a secret as well. Don't whine about them trying to improve the poll.

Yes, they made a mistake, but at least they try prevent it from happening again.

tbh, I don't think thresh would have won it anyway.

IMO, the "fun" of seeing who wins the competition is of more importance to me than to redo the whole thing because one player lost to some russians.. but thats just my opinion i guess.

And btw, stop taking this thing so _bloody_ serious? It's actually not about who wins, it's (as Quiff said) more about learning about the players etc.

The previous polls were done maturely, with boxer and mr. pacman (neither of which I'd even heard of) winning over quakers. It's only when the cs kiddies and the russian kiddies came to play that everything went to crap and all the vote spamming began. Now what does that tell you all?

If the admin wanted to have a semi-serious poll instead of a cheap way to gain new users, he would've excluded all anon votes from all the previous polls and recounted.

Anyway, it's just a stupid poll in a dying website so who gives a toss?

I think people need to calm down a bit. It is not a giant conspiracy from us at ESR.

Basically we had no way to limit polls to registered users, simply because it isn't in the code. And fixing the site when needed sometimes take time for a lot of reasons, our limited access is one of them. Hopefully we are able to fix it for future polls. So it is no conspiracy from our site, we simply had no way of doing it.

Allowing anonymous votes however means there are a lot of problems. First, it opens up for a lot of different abuse. People who are registered can log out for a second vote and anyone with dynamic IP can cast multiple vote. The second (and IMO bigger) problem is that our users will not consider the results legit. In the Thresh-Polos vote 70%+ of our registered users voted Thresh and he still lost bigtime because of the pimping russian sites did (and cheating probably helped Polos quite a bit). If our own users feel its not worth spending time on, we have failed. Simple as that. Unfortunately you can't just pick one of the eight polls and say "that is fixed, we can't count it" without doing the same for all other seven polls. The same flaws have been present all the time. The only thing we can do is to try to fix the problems for the future rounds.

What will happen from now on is that we won't use the poll function of the site, but another function that only allows registered users to give their opinion. Hopefully the future results will reflect the views of the ESR readers more than the views of anonymous hordes of people sent out to vote for "their" guy. And hopefully our users will realize that a lot of us feel bad about the Thresh-Polos result. If you ask me it was very embarrassing. Hopefully things like that can be avoided for the remainder of the poll. If anyone doesn't want to spend their time taking part anymore because they feel it is a waste, I can understand that. But at least realize we are trying to fix things for the rest of the tourney. Re-doing all previous eight rounds isn't really an option.

In the end "Greatest Ever" is a subjective concept. We are never going to get a winner at the end of the tournament everyone agrees with. I would be surpised if even half agreed. It is a bit like when "Stairway to heaven" win "Best song ever" competitions. Wtf is that all about, I find it boring.;)

Just a fact : "Re-doing all previous eight rounds isn't really an option" Imo that's the best solution. Unfortunately the entire vote is now weird due to 1st round and now that's too late for previous gamers in competition. But yes, it is perhaps the less worst general solution :o

i dont see how any of these players would be worth this title if not boxer.. he is a god in a game that has millions of players.. and has dominated/ruled the whole scene singlehandedly when quake has like maybe a thousand or two players...

theres no way to compare a guy like that to some fatality who only cares about FATpads and "fast switching to knew games before other people start owning them him in it"

Boxer is a guy who is totally devoted his life into playing.. nothin else.. no commercial bullshit just pure domination of the most popular "pro" multiplayer game in the world.

Personally I'm sick of a few things here:

1. Paladia and his semi-ignorant Bill O'Reilly attitude. Get off your high horse, please, thx.

2. "The Lemming Effect" -- statistical wise we have sites like Cyberfight and Schroet direct linking the vote for Heaton/Polos RIGHT ON THEIR FRONT PAGE. Wow, this doesn't fuck up the vote ratio.. no... you must be joking

AND FINALLY I have to say that Thresh deserves to win this more than anyone, h3i babbled some bs about Polos "running cyberfight and doing the keyboard in lap thing". What about Thresh and FiringSquad / Ultimate Arena (I'm pretty sure he helped that site as well). What about winning Carmacks CAR.

Xenon losing out to Mr. Pacman _is_ a joke. Xenon has done everything from QW to CS at the highest level - enough said really. Pac-who? (Yes, I do know who he is)

ZeRo4 losing to Potti was almost to be expected, giving the ludicrous amounts of cs players / schroet browsers.... but when it comes down to it zero4 is a dueler, an individual player who has been on the highest level for years. Potti cant say that. Close call, but in any competitive dueling game I know who I'd bet on.

Thresh vs Polosaity really came down to legend vs legend - and Polos was sure to clinch it when the Russian masses heard of this poll ;) Both players are deserving, both individuals have argueably done more for competitive gaming and gathering interest in it globally than any other - imo. Turning on the radio years ago to hear a live radio 1 broadcast commentating as Thresh humiliated Billox is what spawned my interest in gaming.
