You really doubt it? I dunno.. They've done nothing but talk about how cool the graphics are, and about how the graphics will basically make the gameplay.. Graphics don't make a game, gameplay does.. And they've yet to mention anything about how "fun" the game will actually be. I listened to Carmack ramble ON and ON last year at QCon bout how freaking cool it will look.. And granted gfx are peachy keen and all.. But will these demons have brains worth a crap? Carmack openly stated, no, iirc. Doom 3 looks more and more like your typical run of the mill shooter with each article, interview, etc. Run through pretty area, fire at ugly beasts, get key, find door, open door, find the sign that says "EXIT". It'll be like the original doom.. Minus the fun multiplayer, minus the insane speed, wait.. minus the gameplay? Plus the gfx though.. gg :)

I'd LOVE to be proved wrong however, and I'd LOVE for this game to own.. But after spending the past year hearing "Doom 3 is going to LOOK so cool", I'm really just kinda jaded.

Edit: I wouldn't say the next Daikitana.. I'd say the next Unreal 2: The Awakening.. Not a BAD game per se.. Just lacking any depth in gameplay.. But looks freaking cool.

well, if it were any company other than id, i'd agree with u. however, id (to my knowledge) has NEVER made a bad game. every single game has been one of the top games ever, so i see no reason why doom3 won't be in that category.

the biggest thing of all though, do u realize how long this game has been in production? carmac was makin the code for doom3 during q3's making. so it'll be like 5 years in-the-making by the time it's released.

Ofcourse we can. First of all, competitive gamers (i.e. Quakers, UT'ers etc) don't form the big public. It's people who play games for fun and get owned on public servers 1 game a week who are the majority.

And let's face it, those people buy the game just for cool gfx and fancy weapons (remember yourself a few years ago maybe?). And I bet most of the Quakers will also buy the game just :because:

So in fact they'll sell just as good, and they only need to put 1 new multiplayer game on the market as a follow-up and everyone will be just as happy. After all, 2 games sell better than 1 game ;)

that so true man, the reason that i got hooked into the original Quake at first was because of the cool gfx and weapons(at the time), i had no idea i could tweak stuff and to be honest, at that time i dont think i wanted to, imo graphics are VERY important when we talk about single player games, good graphics "sucks" you into the world you are playing, the thing is that most people here are a bit biased with the multyplayer settings, and i could say that im one too, i do belive that for multyplay gameplay>graphics, but we have to remember that Doom3 is a single player game first, and because of that, it needs to have a good gfx settings that match the history of the game...

it's far from being hyped as much as ut2003. with ut2k3, they released movies and showed the game everywhere they possibly could, and kept saying that it will be revolutionary in the "competitive gaming" aspect. basically the only thing that doom3 has hyped is its quality of fear. that encompasses pretty much every aspect of the game. the graphics, the physics, the sounds, are all being made to make the player feel like they're going to shit their pants around every corner. they're not making the game solely for money (ut2k3 seemed like that, and because they're releasing another ut every year...), or they'd be hyping much more than just how scary it'll be.

Well whatever they're hyping doesn't really matter; the thing is, there are games you hardly ever hear about till they're released. That's not the case here at all.

And indeed the hype in UT2003 was a lot worse but then again we're still far away from Doom3 actually being released. While we've already seen that part with UT2k3, I believe you'll be flooded with promotional material more and more as we near D3's release date.

Ofcourse I could be wrong, but if I was working for id/Activision's marketing staff, I'd do just that.

i dunno man, id's always been different in that department. q3 was hyped, but pretty much only by the gamers. doom3 has been hyped, but only at e3, and only been shown as cinematics and three playable levels. the only person to play those levels was the id staff. of course, the game got leaked, but that wasn't id's intention. they've never been big on hyping themselves. i guess they just leave it all to the gamers, who actually form bigger hype than having commercials or something.

Uhm.. I can see it. All the gfx such as lights being able to be shot out makes things quite a bit more complicated. Plus you figure all the moveable objects, etc.. You're looking at synched games most likely, which isn't a BAD thing per se.. id can't make the same game forever.. They're putting all their efforts into a SP game, what's wrong with that? I'm sure there were plenty of people saying in the past "id can't possibly be making a MP only game!" when Q3 was in development.. But they did. Though, out of the box it blew pretty hard, let's hope Doom 3 is different :P

I think the tech development took longer than expected, so the making of the actual content was delayed. They were concentrating too much on hyping the engine and the graphics and maybe realized that the content falls short.

could be true who knows? and yet it would be a good thing if they are delaying untill they have more content..

Well, we will see. I dont think we have the right to make such statements before either of the games are out. If anything, doom3 might be more scary, but i doubt it would be better in many other ways than that.

Well again, I don't think the overall quality of a game matters THAT much while selling it (so long as it lives up to our lowest expectations).

If we'd rate D3 with an 7 and HL2 with a 9, that doesn't mean we'll only buy HL2. Basically you'll complain about stuff missing in a game AFTER you've bought it :)

i seriously doubt that. i cant make ultimate SP experience as they told us but sure they CAN do MP one :D

id should sell their engine to other companies to develop their SP games. good example is rtcw which is great as SP experience heh

i mentioned more games than just CS/Quake3, and actually, i meant ALL released games in that line, the fact that anyone think a game is "dead" dosnt mean we need a new one, we have a lot of games at our hands(games we spended years playing and developing styles at them), the problem is that we are letting other people "decide" what we should play for money, and what game is "dead" or not, and i dont think thats right, i think we should go back to the old days, when we played and competed in Quake(or any game for the matter), because we wanted to, not because (insert company name here) threw a 10k tournament, i think it should be the other way around, where that company threw the 10k tourney for a game that WE choosed...
i belive we should get that power back...

but u have to see one thing.. u can't go and play the same game for fun your whole life.. u will eventually get bored of the same routine, the same trickjumps, the same weapons, etc.. and not everyone likes CS or < insert clone name here > type of games.

and im not talking about playing for fun either, im talking about tournaments and competitive gaming, profecional sports like b-ball or baseball dont do dramatic changes in the rules each year mainly because people that play those games are "happy" with what they already got ...

imho a new game is needed yes.. UT200x has failed most of the gamers expectations.. even the ones who played it for quite some time, there was many people that got bored..

as for mods, i dont care much about them.. they are nice to play once in a while but i like competition, and what is NOT needed is another realistic game. let's see.. we have CS, UrT, BF, Mohaa, TO, RS, ET, and so on.. and there are also some CS clone mods coming for UT2k3 as well.. is this the kind of game that is needed ?

We need a good new TDM/CTF based game, because UT & q3 are getting old, although i belive there are each time more q3 players because of the ut2k3 failure.

On the other hand i wouldn't even bet that much on q4 to be the game we need.. i hope i'm wrong.. but i see the era of TDM and CTF coming to an end :( if u show a q3 or ut demo to someone who hasn't played online he will prolly feel stupid because he will hardly understand the tactics/movement.. if you show him CS or BF he will prolly want to play..

i belive that people that played UT, would be probably still be playing UT if the game would have gotten more spotlight and more money tourneys, the problem was that companys that do the tourneys KILLED UT, by not supporting a game that had a strong fan base, and making them jump into the UT2k bandwagon...
people that played Ut where happy with that game, if the game would have gotten more tournys and support i think i could almost bet that the game would still be "alive" today...
were letting other people decide what we play, and thats wrong...

i don't think it was about the tourneys.. if u didn't had 20K tournaments people would still move on to UT2k3, and would still got bored ( the top players maybe faster ).. the fact is many got back to UT1 again.. but some others wanted to play a new game and started playing q3 ( like myself, although i still play UT1 for my clan ) or CS..

actually, i have know soooooo many people that left Q3/UT for other "money" games that i do belive that other people are deciding what most of us play in a competitive sense...
also, if nobody supports and give big tournaments for those "old" games, people will get bored, thats why we need to get that power back were we decided what where the "money" games...im pretty sure that if someone started to make a series of big money tourneys for Quakeworld it would be fun to play it again...

i dont think we do, the q1/q2/q3/UT and even ut2k plataform are solid, the phisics are good(depending wich game you like), the grafics do their job and we have the experince needed to perform good and give good shows to the public...
i belive all we need is new maps and bigger support from the people that give cash for tourneys...
a new game will not do anything for pro gaming as were just going to play it for a while and then fall again in the same circle, and then were going to be were we started all over again...

With single player gamers it is better that they take their time and polish the game. I am allergic to single player games that need patches to play well. By the time they release the patch I already played through it and have no intention of playing it again.

Sod Doom3, I'm not that interested in playing with my-self again :p I want Quake4. Isn't there any shots of Quake4 yet?

dam WHAT u have no clue what ur talkin about people play games more then just for competition. yes competition is a main factor but people want a game that people will have fun in like quake 3/cs cause after awhile people want something new. i've been playing q3 / cs for 1.5 years and i'm bored as it is and want something new. most of id software games are mulitplayer and the major part of a game is mulitplayer not competitions. most qcons are filled with about 300 to 500 people for 1 certain game if u go to a place to show u how many people are playing like cs u will see over 15,000 people. So don't tell people that competition is the most important part when u don't know what u are talkin about

well...i have been playing for more than just "1.5 years" and i still belive that we have some solid plataforms out there and we dont need a new one to divide the scene more than it is already, neither we need anyone to tell us what game should be the one we play in big money tournaments, we have already mature games, we have the source code for some of those games, and we have the experience, but, if you like the idea of playing halo tourneys for a week, then wait till someone else decides what game will be the "money" game and go right back were we started, again, then more power to you...

oh and btw, i ve never asked people to STOP playing new games for "fun", read again my posts...
