Considering what you get for your money, it is a lot. Most brand new games cost 40-50 euros. I paid a little over 20 euros for dragon age origins and about 30 euros for Bad Company 2 (2 weeks after launch) and both of those games are new games. Paying 24 euros every year means the game will cost you a fortune compared to other FPS games. If you play for 3 years, then you have payed id 72 euros for something valve gives you for free. Does anyone really think id will add more stuff to QL, for the subscribers, than valve has given the TF2 community? TF2 updates are free after the initial fee and it cost about the same on release as 1 year of QL, which makes a 24 euro per year subscription really bad value.

The thing with SC2, it already has an open map development system, and people KNOW that Blizzard will deliver. $50 for SC2 gets you a whole singleplayer campaign, full multiplayer, and free access to battle.net and all custom maps.All you know is that id was willing to make maps just to ask for money - so far, you have no indication that they are willing to add any other maps ever again.

Likely, if they DO add maps, they will just be old maps converted to QL - more than likely, just random shit from lvl that was equally abandoned in Q3.

Furthermore, announcing a new maplist a few weeks before a tournament is bad, including dm13 in it is even worse.

It would be ok if the maps were only meant for pub play, but having premium only maps in the duel maplist in the Duel maplist makes it pretty damn awkward.

We all know Q3 is a better platform than QL and if you're only playing duel, renting a server is cheaper than buying a pro account and you get the rest for free.

The problem is as long as the big tournaments chose QL over Q3 everyone is going to want to play QL :/

They are sponsored from big local provider on his own server. They are free for players(for me, for you, for every player around). There were 8 with player limit set to 22(if I remember right), now they are 4(for obvious reason).

I'm not totally familiar with the US/EU exchange, but 1 euro has the buying power there that 1 dollar has here, does it not? That being the case, 1 USD only gets 0.75 euro at current exchange.

buying power is very difficult to calculate, and the official statistics use something like a standardized shopping list so it won't be that applicable. for example: Gas and clothes are much cheaper, food in restaurants a bit cheaper, but food at supermarkets about the same, while alcohol is much more expensive. It very much depends on what a speicific person spends the most money on.
Otherwise, you might as well take the Big-Mac index as a correct value :P

And it does not matter that much in this decision anyway, because what is important for id is the money they get. That is where the exchange rate comes in. If we pay 4€ and you pay 5$, they will earn more on the European market at the current exchange rate (which I believe is pretty accurate at the moment).

I can count the # of players that play there with my fingers, and I'm a ctf/tdm clanner not a 1v1er anyway. The issue is the central servers where 99% of clanwars take place are pinging much higher than they do in q3 (for me, and other locations not prioritized by speakeasy network) or any other games because of the server provider ql has chosen (speakeasy).

For the west half of Canada the situation is:

Clanwar on Q3: 30-50 ping
Clanwar on QL: 70-110 ping

I really really wish people played q3 instead of ql, even if ql is way more polished and has $$$ blah blah blah :(

I'm in a similar situation, 'cept I'm down in Southern California. Thankfully people still play on LA servers pretty regularly. At least there's some action in TX, which I also ping fine to.
In q3 everyone played on Chi servers, where I ping ~100. In CPMA it's not a big deal, but OSP and ra3 it sucks/ed.
There's only been some Chi action in ql, so far.

Also, ql is not more polished than q3.

Thats just it tho, for north/south people like us there has always been at least one of the two central servers that pings decenty so we can do the clanwar thing. But I ping like ass to both IL and TX in QL (and only in QL) so theres just nothing to do.. D:

My line of thinking is that they'd induce these slight delays in order for people to get annoyed enough to fork over some cash and be rid of said delays. 15 secs to wait before you can log-in here, 10 secs of watching some ad before the game there, seeing people having parties on Overkill in Freeze Tag, all in order to exploit the rapidly spreading mmo brainwave of "hurr durr is only little monies for awsum kontent + no anoyance i has to has itz".

The game isn't getting bigger so id are just trying to pressure people into paying before it dies.

On the one hand, I don't mind paying 2 euros per month for new maps, new game modes, no ads, etc, and just have fun with all this stuff.
On the other hand, it kinda feels wrong to pay, because so far id software's actions in last year or so mostly produced only more and more hate from players. They stopped almost all communications with community, the only guy that was really helping, TTimo, was pulled off from QL, it became absolutely impossible to set up a LAN server at your competition because id wouldn't even reply to your requests, etc. Even when people were trying to do something for id, like asking for a map contest, id simply rejected all help for lame reasons. Then they started to make things secret. Focus group, NDA's, that promised DevBlog post that never got published and so on. Even QCon maplist is secret. And they banned slasher for telling us even little bits of that super secret information that were already available on ESR. So basically, they completely barricaded themselves from the community, except the focus group people kept under strict NDA, and after all that ask for our money. And even the annual payment scheme kinda suggests that id themselves don't believe that people will keep playing. WTF, id?

Think about this: Even if you do make new maps it makes sense to convert the old ones with much less effort, especially if the community is so vocal about a lot of them. (ztn / hub, for example)
Whether the old maps are then in the mappool or new ones are taken, as many have demanded, is imo an unralated matter.

those things which they're giving us now in this update ( i mean maps ) should be in quakelive atleast year ago and they even trying force me to pay monthly for this :DD ridiculous i'm not even saying that those maps were in quake 10 years ago :DD

While I think id is going in the right direction with more classic and new maps, a new match-making system, and a lot of other stuff, it bothers me more what is NOT in all the leaked info. I miss many things, some examples are:
- GTV
- "Netcode" fix so you don't have to aim BEHIND to hit
- A better spawn system (1vs1/TDM/CTF)
- Removal of that weird CTF overtime delay system
- Slots for spectators only (requested a thousand times)
- 15 min. tl for duel
- Option to turn off online/offline notifications of friends while playing which causes horrible lag for many people
- Overall way better performance (CPMA runs smooth as butter, while QL still feels like baseq3)
- Chat tokens
- Decent server browser (list view, that I can refresh when I want, like MAXBrowse, etc.)
- A better scoreboard
- In-game accuracy with shots fired/missed (like OSP/CPMA)
- Something better than Punkbuster
- Option to turn off rain, snow, etc. (while this stuff is still nice for movie-making, it's distracting even with high picmip and so on)
- Separation of CTF and TA (ideally keep TA weapons to that gametype since they don't improve gameplay)
- 5 min. overtime for Pro TDM
- At least the option to drop a power-up in CTF, better would be a /kill command
- Sound system still feels broken and sometimes gives lag

We all knew QL wouldn't stay free forever. I for one think premium and pro accounts are a good offer, both cheap. What they want from us for a whole year even for a pro account is easily spent in one night going out. At least these are prices that don't hold me back.
For me it doesn't matter if it's free or if I have to pay little money, but what I DO care about is if the game is GOOD or not! Did you ever think when getting the spawn below YA on DM6 vs. LG spawn of your opponent: "After 10 years they still didn't manage to sort out spawns, most likely I already lost if he doesn't suck, but such flaws are ok and I'm fine with it, because QL is free and I have to be thankful to id"? No, you didn't, of course. You don't see people going around for no reason or hammering their heads onto walls just because it's free. That's not how stuff works.

If you want to attract people, you will need to have a good and polished product. Then you can charge money. Else you will lose customers no matter how low the price is, even if it's free.
Regarding QL I think it has the potential to attract many people, it could easily grow, could have a big community--a win-win-situation for id and us players is possible. But the game still has a lot of major problems. I don't see me having fun with a bad spawn system or when in a game-deciding situation QL lags me to death just because a friend logged on. Some people suffer from horrible lags and fps problems even on high-end machines. As said above: There is no price that turns such situations into an awesome experience!

This is what worries me: id keeps adding stuff to QL like looking through walls (who asked for that?), bloom, endless color options, damage indicators, and whatnot, but did we hear an explanation to important changes like tl 10 for duel? No! A widely discussed issue, but id refuses to talk to us at all. While BETA testing...
At least id is on the right track with maps in this update it seems, but they have to work on the basics. When QL went open beta people came back to Quake or moved over from Q3, we had a lot of fun, but many of them are fed up with bad hit detection (when you have to aim behind an opponent there must be something wrong after all), lags all over the place, a bad spawn system, etc. If id wants QL to be successful, they will need to provide a solid product.

I'm willing to pay, but id needs to adress things like listed above and should start to talk and listen to the community.

Yea, I have yet to see rain and snow in QL also due to my settings. But the view on maps that have it is not as clean as without this stuff.
