Maps are classified by map filename not name, which is why it looks like they are unsorted.

Should be by mapname though and not filename. Some maps just got some strange names.

Also, perhaps slightly modify the existing maps so they equal the item placement and what not of the TMP mappack.

Just so that every stock map doesn't have to be listed twice in the maplist

I agree on toning down ramp jumps, low ammo sound (i think you want to remove the "not") and the usual bugs they are trying to fix since 1.0. The other points are minor/not needed, imo.

Rail 100dmg/10ammo is needed for tdm. It works fine in duel/ctf but its a shame to play with 7 slugs...

I only added those things i came across where the majority agreed on something. The rail ammo/dmg is something none can draw a resonable conclution about, until such a conclution is drawn by the majority it's not something I add. You can agree or disagree, but thats what the thread is for, point out things and hopefully come to a conclution. And the majority isn't 5-10 players so getting enough players to support a statement is hard :)

in q3 a marority of players prefer ops/vq3 overpowered hitscan weapons than nerfed ones in other mods, doesn't make vq3 the best mod

I'm not even sure a majority would want rg or lg back to powerfull 1.3 setting ; I even think there were only the 17 q4 progamers wanabe, who relied on their aim to win, who would want that, and I guess they don't play anymore q4 anyway since the progamer hype is dead for q4 and gone to pk2 and severity or wherever prosheep gaming is taking them by the hand of fail@havingfun

I know a lot of ppl complaining about the rail but they have already changed to play q3 instead of q4 because its the easiest way to get satisfied. They wont post here their gameplay wishes because they dont give a fuck about q4 anymore. They are looking forward to quakelive.

I disagree, I think damage and ammo count is fine, the thing I say is that since the nerf, the maps haven't had more rail ammo added. Monsoon, needs a Rail ammo pack right over by the GL and MG ammo above red armor or next to the shards below the LG.

I thought they should have tamed the rocketlauncher as well. I think they put more emphasis on the use of the rocket with the lowring of the damage of the railgun. .8 firerate and 100 damage and radius damage in comparison to 1.5 firerate and 90 damage and no radious damage doesnt look balanced. They could have just gave more health to the player to solve the issue too rather than lowering the rail damage and ammo. Instead of 100, give 140 and 125 and don't limit the ammo.

I don't have any issue with q4max, but the reputation of convention definitely gives q4max a playerbase, of course having the pro image as well. I imagine when Deltactf comes out--having an id employee the leader of the team will get player base as well. But, I wouldn't go as far as saying that q4max players are sadists lol.

I tend to agree, I don't see Q4 as bad as people say it is. I think ego has a lot of play in it, you have to have thick skin in this game. One thing, I look at q3 team arena and see all the ctf maps and was a bit let down that the community contest didn't yield more ctf maps. I think they could have brought overdose and harvester over to q4 as well. Seems to me they didn't reallyh spend the time they could have in q4 in comparison to what q3 has. An ignorant opinion would be that they had a time limit and rushed q4 out the door with the idea of fixing stuff later through patches.

How about a great working netcode, I think that should of been and should be priority number 1, this is one of the main reasons people don't play this opposed to cpma.

IMO, *any* bugfixes in q4 at this point should be engine-side only. ie, if it can be fixed in a mod, then leave it to us modders rather than wasting the opportunity to fix engineside bugs.

To get you started, here are a few engine-side bugs which I know are already in id's list:
- fix memory leak of .gui's on dedicated servers
- fix engine segfault/AV in download server
- fix "zombie" clients when bots are present at map change

Possibly linked to the first one is "fix server CPU load issue after 14 days of uptime" (personally I'm not convinced the two issues are related, although obviously the mem overhead gets silly after lots of map changes etc)

That explains why it feels insanly shitty after X number of days without restart and the same is when you change 10-20 maps per day it get's bad aswell.

I don't know if that could be fixed in Q4MAX or it needs a deeper insight into the engine:
- func_damagable binded to func_door doesn't work properly (not moving with doors) on a dedicated server

The bug is easy to reproduce on "Ruiner CTF" (shoot the door with a hitscan weapon, and then shoot again in the same diection while the doors are open).

Already written down, many sadly have this issue. 128 paks isn't enough it seems, so would be good to have a larger number if that is possible. If this number cannot be altered, somebody then might need to make some strange and large mappacks.

A ctf mappack would be good, because many could use it and there are not that many ctf maps.

There are several OpenAL specific issues, which are all engine side (eg crash with EAX reverb enabled).

There are other issues which are maybe gamecode side (doesnt mean not present in q4base, but if someone could tell me how to reproduce them or give me a demo that captures them I could maybe fix).

I get them sometimes, i know some ppl who get that too, even in 0.81 afaik. Mostly when i die while having LG/RL selected.

I am at a point to give up q4 because of the lack of tdm and of the gameplay.
One question to the ones who are satisfied with PR 1.4.2 : Is it so much fun to wait and wait for match? Imho its not fun to search for such a long time for a match and that is frustating. There a games out there where you can join a server and play immediately.
So maybe you think about the community instead of yourself.

Its a sad state of affairs the lack of games, there are basically 3 servers to play, 420's 2k7s, jotl and a couple others only. Very limited, very sad. Truecarnage has a server up but you probably have to be pretty experienced not to get your sh&t f*cked with so if you are an average player you're pretty doomed in this game.

I actually find the TC server quite fun, and I have played CTF for about 3 weeks now. The pickup games are good for new players because even if you suck, your gonna end up having good players on your team, so it wont be as bad for you as it would be in duel.

Its a good point--you only get better by playing against good players. I find it very interesting the ego aspect of this game. You can observe the two poles---people who are too hard on themselves and put themselves down---and the otherside of those who have skill but overbloat it through grandiosity :)

Most of the players on the truecarnage pickups are helpful. Just let them know you are new and its all good. We need new players. There are only a few ego players and we have most of them in check.

I shouldn't have used the truecarnage as an example, my apologies. Not to say my ICTF server is not competitive--but a lot of people play on it i think one reason is it doesnt have the pro image so people feel a bit less intimidated.

I thinki people may feel their "face" is being held in focus and feel a bit inferior to the hotshots and it may veer them away from certain venues. Especially whne people don't want to show how noob or what they think their skill level is at to the public.

I think quake could have multiple settings per weapon set by the server as well--this would allow the game to be suitable to multiple skillevels or desires. When the 1.4.2 update came---i had to almost learn to rail again----but the veterans didn't appear phased much at all, so my hopes of balancing the "gap" were shattered, the hitboxes and models only reinforced the wide gap it didnt shrink it, and possibly hurt quake more than it helped it. Definitely enhanced anger in players over missing.

To apply vygotskian psychology, you have to have the proximal development, you cant have the carrot too far away from the person, you have to have the carrot "just" out of reach. The wide gap quake has is too wide and people who are new just don't have the idea they have a chance to win and when they find out these people have played for 10 years--they may not want to invest the time in the game. So, making the hitboxes small and models small is good--but give an option to the server to choose is a better idea which will help lessen the gap and therefore frustrated newbies may stick around a bit longer. Second of all, who wants to play a game that has weapons that are very hard to use effectively? Does quake want to have its balance majoritively on the side of the runners and crouchsliders?

Then the crazy noob like myself thinks "This can be analogized to the proletariat who worship the bougoisie :P I come to server and lose to support the few---joking lol. But its a comical analogy, in a way servers can turn into a worship festival of a few people. LIke the oppressed poverty population who lost their jobs who are devoted to the moneymakers who help sustain their poverty :P"

joking, but its one thing that quake is awesome at other than just the game, but its name--id--it should be id-ego development :) Because its really interesting game to observe both outwardly and introspectively the ego play and emotionalism, its a stellar game, and shows how fun the mind is, you can even tie in comically aristocratism to the game :P lol.

I don't think there's going to be another update for awhile, but if we're coming back to this -

maybe leave the weapon inventory on the bottom of your screen, so it stays, instead of fading away after a few seconds of weapon switching.

It doesn't need to have the ammo listed like in most comp mods, but at least an option in the menu to toggle it to stay.

In FFA, if you spectate for 5 mins and then play for 5 mins, it shows you have been playing for 10 mins. It shouldn't count the time you've been spectating. Also! If possible, make q4 aim the same way as the other quakes. All the shots in q4 come out of the xhair, but in the other quakes they come from the bottom or the side of the screen. This is how it works in Q4 - you are pinocchio with a 10ft long nose and your nose is a rocket launcher. Thats exactly what its like. And that is rubbish and always will be... and I will explain why! If someone is running towards you, and you fire a rocket - but you strafe out of the way before the rocket has left this "nose", your rocket will go right off target and that bastard who doesn't deserve to live after rushing in like that will just shoot the shit out of you. In the other quakes, if you fire and strafe 1ms after you fire, the rocket will have already left the barrel and will smack right into that idiots face, and they DESERVE IT (rushing like that should be a bad tactic).

To do an experiment with this, load up q2 (its the best at showing it because of fairly slow projectiles), and all you have to do is strafe in a direction and fire a projectile (ie rockets). Notice how the rocket will instantly go off to the left if you're strafing right, now in q4 try the same thing and watch as the rocket will appear at the xhair after a short delay, and THEN it will go to the left. I'm sure a lot of people got used to this, but a lot of people probably don't know about it and don't know why they miss these shots. Anyway there are of course LOTS of other shots like that, which are messed up because of the same reasons.

Its just another reason for people not to play the game, and I think id is really messing up if they keep this aiming system for any other fast competetive game.

Something to consider for future releases is, a lot of textures look bad when theres no lighting or bump maps, it'd be nice to have textures which look like they have bump maps and lighting on them... ie like q1/2/3 textures, for when using ambient light. Not a big deal it would just be nice (for me;) )

Bumpmaps with low ambient/no ambient look really bad (e.g. wcp14 Perf).

That overbounce thing is good imo, it just needs to get fixed. As you can see in my little video linked in the topic (Overbounce speedup), they are different on different frame rates.

Q4 equals everything on \o/ ofcorse turning of bumpmap will look horrible when it's a bumpmapping game :P

But given that its the kind of game where a lot of players will turn it off (and keep it off 99% of the time), it would be nice if it didn't look horrible when you do :>

The best thing would be if you had a system in the game which could turn full bumpmapped/specualar texture into a single texture for use in ambient light, like a freeze frame screenshot of what the texture looks like in max quality. Then people who make new textures could also create the ambient ones for them.

I make my maps in ambient light, cos thats what a lot of people use, and pretty much anything looks good in max quality but sometimes it can unforseeably look ridiculously crap in ambient light. There are textures which I'd never use just because of how bad they look in ambient, but they look really cool in max quality. In the end it just makes the amount of useable textures smaller, which is probably why people moan about q4's lack of textures. I think Q4 could do with more repeatable type textures, like bricks and strips though :D

there is a strange weapon change Bug in Quake 4.its pretty frustrating when you have selected the Rail and it fires Rockets instead.The "Funny " thing is:it always happen when i want to take out the flag carrier...

Change it back to 0 if it isn't already. This option comes with 1.4.2, defaulted on 1 even though it tends to break and make you fire the "wrong" weapon, q4max or not.
We've changed the default value, but if it was already in your config, it won't magically change to a working value.

It's never to late to fix things in a game that gets some new players every day. Public runs more or less the same as always and have full servers often. Pessimism is a major issue with quakers which almost cannot be found on public and is the main reason why many play there instead of on private servers.

Players using this forum and IRC is at time more hung up in whining about "there is a issue with this and that", but not actually describing what the issue really is or comming to a conclution about a given problem. By just doing useless whine and being a pessimist you won't do any good for yourself or for the game. Help out, describe the issue, help comming to a conclution and we might make this game better then it's ever bin.

Yeah, I like the idea of making this free---you can get it for 10 bucks now. I think the quake live will bring people in, pogo does it that way with their games and thousands play on their servers. It would be worth it, people download it free and server companies may make more money serving up the game, its a good way to get a bigger player base and I imagine the server companies would be pleased.

Not to mention the game is discontinued.

What should happen is, Quake Live should be Q4 gameplay in the Q3 engine.

Q4 misses good netcode, FPS, and skins/models, perhaps better gibs but I don't mind the gibs in q4 tbh =)

The point is, you could put the best gameplay ever into the D3 engine and it will never be a great multiplayer game, because of the engine.

What I'm saying is Q4 is like a gem in the dirt, I think its quite a lot better than the other quakes, its just that this fact is hidden by the things mentioned above.

Instead of rehashing Q3, which I think would be very very boring, a combination should be made from Q2, Q3 and Q4. You take the engine from Q3, the chaingun and handgrenades from Q2, and everything else like movement/armour/health etc from Q4 and I think you then have yourself the best quake ever :P

I dunno why it wouldn't be any harder to do, and I don't think the q3 fanboys matter that much, the main problem with q4 is that new people are put off for one reason or another. The main reason though is because Q4 is too much like Q3, not the other way around, imo.

People also like to stick with what they are good at or used to as well. People find a groove in q3 and they come to q4 and have a different experience to their persepctive they may not like it much or may not give it enough time. A lot of people cannot stand to lose as well and I think that factors in a lot of people leaving a game if they don't notice any improvement in themselves soon enough.

Personally, if one could own in a game and master it within a month---I wouldn't give the game a good score. What makes quake so good is that one person can continually play for months and still find room for improvement.

That would help alot of newcommers to get better movement which is a really good idea.

I think an arena would be best with some jumps and sign posts with instructions on how to do the jumps. Then you can have markers and arrows etc to show people where to jump from and when to press certain buttons. Maybe have a tutorial secion on the main menu, where you can watch a pro move around the arena, and then afterwards go into the arena yourself.

Edt: but yeah, maybe just the demo for now.. easy to do ;) But I think it being in the menu is a must, not jumbled up with all the other demos :>

The netcode still needs to be improved more, and it would be nice if it gave a message when players connect to servers. It's surprising that Q4 doesn't have that when it does tell you when players disconnect.

Agreed, never know when suddenly you loose a player unless he times out then it get's displayed.

I thought of some more things;

In the SKQ4 server browser, I can see the scores of players in Q4 max, but not q4mp. So I'm guessing Q4max has fixed a bug there which would be nice to have fixed for base.

Another small thing is the viewsizeup/viewsizedown from Q4max is fixed, would be nice for q4mp.

Neither is a bug - scores simply dont exist in the serverinfo in q4. Q4Max has its own scorebot feed cvars. Changing the serverinfo response to do this "properly" (ie how it should have been done from 1.0) would break all server-browsers until they update. Given that MAXBrowse is probably the only one which would get an update maybe I should agree that this should be done... :)

sizeUp / sizeDown are actually debug commands, and not really intended for use. The q4m viewSizeUp/ down commands on the other hand arent debug commands. ;)

That was one of my kind of shattering early discoveries upon q4's release, that while you could send q3 servers a getinfo request and get some reasonable player info including scores as response, the corresponding q4 request is answered with only rudimentary player info, notably lacking scores. It somehow destroyed my idea that things would get better with every new game, as well as I felt that id might release things even when they're not done, in contrast to that well known quote.

It would be a feature request of mine for the next game, to include a server query which captures game/player state reasonably complete, including player team (where spec mode i guess is seen as team affiliation), time spent on team, readiness, ping, score, player id, public guid, and maybe other stuff which comes to mind when thinking about it a little more.

Some of the above has been included by max via dot server variables, but this approach is clearly kind of a hackish fix, and it really should be part of the core code.

-make it so your arms don't appear to be cut off when you are using a high fov setting.

I did that on the original Q4 demo before. I downloaded it cause I was curious to see how bad 1.0 was - and yeah it's terrible.
But I told some people about updating to a newer demo and they agreed to try it. I found out the people I talked to had previously tried to patch there demo with 1.4.2 and were confused why it didn't work Lol.

RAVEN make mistake and that mistake is corrected by 1.4.2.

But another mistake was been make in 1.4.2 movement:

slides are so powerfull that even Q4MAX team say that this is shit !!! I can't find that proper comment by ArQoN but the fact is:

Its because movement - in CTF it might work and don't ruin the game but in 1v1 slides are ruin the game.

It will be really hard to change movement today: most servers will stay on 1.4.2 and they will give shit about 1.5 just like all OSP CA players with want to move to Cpma - they yuse 1.43 because in 1.44 fastrail was removed ant that is shit...

And since Q4 is only CTF now - what is the point of taken away "broken movement" ...

did they changed the crouchslides in pr 1.4.2? I thought it was only regarding the rampjumps... which are now a little easier and I like them. I played some 1.3 games to get a better impression of the movement. PR 1.3 feels slow in comparison to 1.4.2 which is maybe an issue of 60fps... The 1.3 movement is fine but i prefer 1.4.2 movement because I am used to it but I dont know how 1.3 movement would feel like with 90fps.

Hmmm, no splash damage on the rail and a 1.5 firerate versus same damage and radius with .8 firerate---so why is 100 so evil on the rail considering that? Plus, toxic isnt a good example--the majority are not going to be able to use the shaft like them anyways. And in my opinion, you have to make the game aimed towards the norm, otherwise we cannot complain about a small commumity if thats what id had in mind with quake-making it for the custom few. Balancing the weapons for the pros would actually cause more damage to playerbase rather than help it, because many others (including toxic himself) have said that the learning curve on this game is harder than most. So, to test the weapons you don't want to test it for the pros. Toxic's idea that the playerbase is small because of the big gap does make sense even if all the q4fan boys flamed him out for it lol.

Plus, making the weapons almost unhittable and ultraconservative on damage does not necassarily mean a better game. I don't really care for the idea we need to make the models and the hitboxes so tiny that you ahve to take 20 shots with a rail in order to get one hit, all that does is piss people off and then they will just blame the coders by saying the netcode sucks. Not to say the netcode is perfect though or anyone is wrong about the netcode as a general term.

With 6 people on a server and with 125 steady ping in 15 minutes to get 85 kills with instagib railgun---is not too shabby a benchmark, especially if I am used to playing with 35 and 69 ping and hardly ever play with 125. So, yeah quake has its issues, I dont like how I can log statustics on a listen server but cannot on a dedicated--I dont like how so many cool things work with listen but dont on dedicated. But, Quake 4 is a pretty good game and I dont actually see it as bad as a lot of people want to make it look.

One thing that can be done is to take statistics, whats the average misses with the rail? Whats the average attempts before making a shot? Once you get that mean or average than you can look and see the amount of time. Say the average attempts before making a hit is 5 shots before one hit---

5 x 1.5=7.5 seconds---since whne would 7.5 seconds for 100 damage be too good?

now say the average is the same with the rocket--
5x.8=4.

But with the rocket you get close you got radius damage. So, I think there is a bit of a bias against the rail. But to be honest--if there is no rail in teh game I dont play it.

Fun and pro---I think you can have both. But having weapons that are extremely hard to kill with may not be fun for most. Especially against players who have great strafing and crouchsliding---extremely nerfed weapons make the game totally theirs becuase they will appear invincible. Ineffective weapons is not the total answer to a game's problem.

Effective weapons make ctf fun and interesting because it makes it harder for people to cap. Ineffective weapons just give a bit too much power to movement, you have to balance out the game with good weapons. 7.5 seconds---hoiw far can a good strafer get in that amount of time? Quite far and odds are he or she has armor as well as health so yeah I dont think 100 damage is too bad actually.

player base is small because since its release q4 has been a piece of shit in any possible aspects for months until pr1.3 came out

Its not irrelevant to the playerbase. People talk about the speed of quake being too fast. I think you are focusing way too much on how (in your opinion) quake sucks. There is more to the game than achieving ego by flaming out the game. One reason I liked that toxic interview is he gave substantiated reasons rather than just ego-play by harping about how the game sucks.

Ithe rellevance is---people have a hard time with the rail or with weapons---they will blame the coder and start talking about issues. Thats the relevance to the gap and skill. You just cannot have a real hard game and not have people think the code sucks. and about skill blabla : the biggest problem of quake, any of them all, is the lack of tutorial to what makes most of quake : circle jumping and so strafe jumping. without these basic movements quake is dull, really dull, and you'll get raped easy by the lowest skilled player who know how to do these moves

I am not saying that the netcode is perfect, and me I dont play anything but q4 and doom3. Its just easy to see sometimes that the q4 needs to get some good public rep rather than the overheavy criticism. Whcih is why I liked the toxic interview--he said some good things about the game. to be honest, I have not had that many issues playing quake like I read about. Netcodewise playwise I havent lagged much at all really. Too bad a lot of other people can't have the same experience--then the media reputation would be better :) Mediawise from what I read and hear---it would be that quake is not good. I shouldn't have stated (your) in reply, so it wasn't a personal direction at you, my misuse of language there. So I have no issue with the opinion i was just trying to relay about the negativity and the effects. You have done good work on the map fixes, I hosted those maps from back in 1.2 and they are clearly less lagged.

actually the real negativity came from hordes of q3 players who barely played q4, mostly trolls who -still- think q4 is at the same state as 1.0 (ofc q4 1.0 deserved a huge bashing, but 1.3 saved the day on the most important level : gameplay wise)
the fight for q4's player base development finished with the new 1.4.2 demo release, and it ended in a bitter draw : the game isn't dead, but hasn't grown and has a very small community
so I don't see anything -except something huge- changing this now
would be cool to have a new patch for this small community though of course, I would be glad about it, especially if it also brings vq4 ctf at more than epileptic 62.5fps (I'm being too pozitiv !)

btw the maps you've hosted in 1.2 time should have been Drach's one, I started learning editing after 1.4.2 release iirc

All of the perfix maps I hosted on my ictf server since 1.2 patch---I had 225+mb worth of maps on the server, just about every ctf map I could find i hosted--I dont think I hosted any of drach's actually, most spectra's, kl sylvester and a host of others.

One major thing about the internet---anything can create the ping issue, how can we prove what caused what? Me personally, I host a radio station that streams to computers and irc and msn messenger and xfire and a bunch of other stuff---so yeah its hard to isolate the cuase of lag with so many things.

One thing I definitely know has caused issues while quaking---is the windows update--if the windows update is searching for updatge in the background I lag out real bad, and msn has caused me to lag.

I dont think you can find any game that has no issues actually, I imagine ut3, counterstrike,crysis all those games there can be issues to be found.

Plus, I am not an expert, but I think software companies release things with bugs with the later intentionof patches being applied, it can be a sly way of research and development or as a released beta without the beta. With the intention of fixing it later.

Quake is quite a complex game and the guis themselves alone are quit complex never mind the rest, so I don't think its all that bad considering.

The only negative about too many patches is that it could divide a community, say a game has 6 patches and people like 3 of them and stay--you will have a community that is spread out.

Quake is a great game because it stresses people out skillwise, people get really pissed off because of the skilllevel. I study psychology and the school has an eyetracking lab and their focus is on cognitive psychology, I am just surprised they don't try to use this game as a tool because its perfect for it. You can even study emotional reactions of individuals with this game too. A great game with so many ways it can be used :) The eyetracking lab has computers and they put your head on a rest and you follow the red light thats on the computer monitor---trying to measure perception timing. What other game could be so good at measuring the times of perception in human beings lol. Such potential in quake---for 10 bucks!!!!

i thought the overall weapon balance was better in 1.3 (besides maybe rail), in 1.4 it seemed like rocket rush became a much more viable tactic for 'random' kills when not in control because of the different movement and rockets being so dominant. most problems with shaft were with the ammo count i think (this was absolutely ridiculous in most of q4, you could shaft for 25 secs straight with max ammo), 1.3 shaft/movement with 200 max ammo on shaft would be nice

Most maps have atleast 2 rockets (and CTF has 2 rockets per side) meaning it's the weapon of choice for most. The main issue about this weapon is the bad users of it. There are few rocket users in a CTF game for instance having over 30ish % hit on this weapon, most hit even under 30%. It's all about shooting in random directions to see if the shot hits anybody, rushing in shooting at the god dam flag (still can't figure out why the ¤#¤% people shoot at the flag) or fixed locations to see if there are players there or not.

The weapon itself isn't bad as it has a good speed, good splash damage and is on many locations in a map. The problem is the users using it as if it was the "plasma gun" instead of a precision weapon as it actually is. Bad rocketusers tend to overuse it at long distances (where a smart person would use rail), shoot at very close range (blowing you and enemy up), spamming it in to cover a teammate (meaing most of the time you hit teammate instead making him change his path due to the splash damage) and using it as a tool to see if somebody is there (mindless shot for no appareant reason)

To make the game less spam and rocket oriented game, bringing back the LG might be a sollution as it tends to assrape all the spamming RL users, same does the 100 hitting rail. But that mightl bring more issues back then it actually solves in the long run as the main issue about RL lays in the users and not the weapon itself. By having fewer rockets throughout a map and at locations where it doesn't highlight spamfest might be a better answere then changing the actual weapon.

In a LG vs RL fight, RL will win in 1.4.2 due to LG's low hittage (hitbox + firerate + + +). Bringing back the 1.3 LG will make these two weapons more even and make it more about perfection then about spam. As most of the fights during a game is LG vs RL it might be a good answere to bring back the 1.3 LG with it's good and bad sides, as it evens out the gap between these two weapons.

My thougts to 1.4.2.:

Maps need to be adjusted to the fast movement and the edges of the stairs need a fix beause when you jump on the edges itz kinda a random thing if you stick to the edge or not (e.g. placebo mh edge jump to the upper left corridor near rl).

i also wish that a zoom feature for every weapon would be added and that the fov value also < 90 can be..

@q4max: the crosshairs need a fix. they should be sharper and the size should not be maxlimit 100.

Well, one thing they could do, is make the damages configurable serverside. Why not? I understand playes want a standard--but they cn ahve presets and have the gaembrowser stat so. Allowing the server admins to adjust damages ranges firerates would be an outstanding boost and a solution to this issue. Have presets too. Sort of like q4max's design, stick your damages and firerates and ranges in a config file and stick it in the directory what isnt defined the default is used, something like that.

oh noes, then some admins think:
"oh noes i can't handle LG so i lower the damage to 2 and i own you all, ehehe"

I dont play ut3 much---I picked it up for the bots--at 3am there is noone playing and I am by myself so I play the ut3 bots in ICTF and one of the bots made a statement after I lost lol "You lost, blame the coders" something to that effect. Yeah, there would be a lot of crazy servers but it would be fun and presets would be a must and advertising the presets would be a must as well. lol.

But, it would give power to the enduser which is always a great thing for any software company to do is letting your users config the program the way they see fit. I think ther is a tendency for coders to have a viewpoint and to want to see the user's use their stuff the way they see it---and often the enduser may have totally differnet ideas to how they want to use it that may differ--the elemen\t of control.

The company (e.g idsoftware) has to balance the game and it will only work this way. With other "presets" the game will be unbalanced. And i rather see all servers using the standard "preset" than every server using a different balance preset.

Would really like to see 1.3 back, or at least the 1.3 movement and gameplay. 1.3 just felt so balanced compared to 1.4.2.
I mean besides the basic reasons.it also has to do with the dueling maps, pretty much all of them were made for 1.2 and prior(I think), but now with the faster movement these maps are just chaos and not much fun.
Maybe with a all new set of dueling maps made for the new movement it could help balance it out more. But honestly I just rather see 1.3 back.

A cool gift to the community would be a scaled "anthology mappack" that includes all maps from q1 to current that came with quake--including the team arena :) And include harvester and overdose too :) That would be pretty sweet. Yeah the new gametype may be asking a bit much but oh well, all maps combined would be cool and yeah as stated before making the 128 limit more. I bought team arena and saw all those maps and wished they were in q4---especialy the distant scream map. An anthology game even wouldnt be bad---include all quake games in one and ship it. Quake Platinum---good for all versions. Then, if there is enough support for patches---have patch version of q4 so people can choose either.

Extending it even further---include doom too :) imagine that all ids games bundled onto one dvd to install, that would pretty sweet and it would help becuase people would have all of them up to this point and may help smaller games. I have seen some people go play quake wars and not come back lol.

The thing about crouch sliding is, it might be quiet and small but all thats really needed is a sound to signify someone is crouch sliding (I don't know why this wasn't added in 1.4.2 because it was mentioned a lot, and doesn't seem like a huge thing to do). I think the windtunnel sound from q2 is the kind of sound which would be nice (something you could hear a little bit but won't be too annoying to hear).

I see the definte enhancment in weaponfov--but when I was a noob--the one thing that kept me away back then from q4max was how the weapons looked like. One thing q4max has done---and of course my mod :P with its menus is allowing a lot of people to be aware of settings. So yeah, vanilla quake could have done better at making submenus that allow the user to see the options from the graphical menu rather than tabbing through teh console. So many gamers in quake don't really know much about operations of a computer and settings. Back in 1.3 the GTR mod was crazily frustrating becasue I had to repeat 100's of times how to change the skin colors and people kept getting them wrong, they just couldnt copy what I would type--it took so jmuch time and was so maddening lol. I would go crazy insane lol.

Have more things in the menu like:
turn of trails (rocket, nail, gl, rail), playerLean, gibs, muzzleflash, fov, skipItemShadowsMP, skipPlayerShadowsMP, doubleVision... etc

Atm to be able to have a descent tweaked game you need to know how to use the console. Many who play VQ4 just does everything in the menu and then play, then complain about lag.

I get your point, but a working hud system (hud, scoreboard, in-game tab) will bring alot more FPS then if you manage to get the effects to use 10 FPS instead of 30. The current hud takes everywhere from 75-110 FPS depending on machine and quality. The gain in a working hud system is much more supperior then the powerup effects :)

Eh? As I said on IRC before, the actual bugs in your lists are all pretty trivial. Theres only 1 that I'd consider worthy of a patch (httpd crash), and even that isnt critical as theres a work around. Most of the issues are fairly laughable (wtf is it worth wasting id's time putting an upper limit on g_playerlean? Admittedly its a 30second thing, but theres no need, and it certainly cant be used as justification for pushing a new build out), and gameplay changes are just personal opinion.

id went well above and beyond my expectations with the 1.4 series of patches - they certainly didnt need to implement q4tv, si_fps, built-in httpd, or any of the other major changes brought when the game was already pretty quiet.

Perhaps id will put out another build to fix 1 more round of bug-fixes, but you talk as if we should have some kind of expectations of a big patch.

If anything, the tiny number of real issues highlighted in this thread shows that its not really worth id's time, and that they're better off working on Rage and Quakelive.

A nice gift would be a mappack that would include all the quake maps from q1. Plus, yeah a way to get 128max pak exceed increased. That would be sweet. I am not saying id has done nothing for the community but for all the mapmakers and modders--its justifiable that they can spend the tinme since they make the money for the game and the future games.

A great idea would be to make a deal with microsoft---and have windows ship with q4 multiplayer, hehhehe imagine the people then if every windows shipped had q4 mp in it. Of course microsoft probably wouldnt even let it happen if id even asked but just ideas lol.

max_pure_paks doesnt really need to be increased imo. What server admin in their right mind is gunna run with 90ish custom maps on the server? If more custom maps were addon.conf'd they'd be even less reason for this.

The only issue here is listen servers run by clients, and theres not much of a need for this given the abundance of servers, and all the issues around listens.

Re map-pack, well they've already given a whole load of extra official maps and I dont see much reason for them to add to that (the Quakemas map pack, followed by the 1.3 maps, followed by the CMP). When I give people links to 1.4.2 they often complain about the size of it, so new players may not appreciate another 100mb of maps nobody plays.

It certainly has its issues (surprised it doesnt feature in this buglist tbh). But it is the correct solution to hitting max pure paks, since if all maps were addons (and they were working correctly), out of that 128 pk4s that you can have, you'd need the 20 base pk4's, 2 q4max pk4's, and just 1 map pk4 - ie, a long way off hitting the limit (and also suddenly becomes much nicer to connect to servers / play demos)

A ton of people have that error because of the multiple servers they play. CTF servers definitely have a lot. It limits people from joining servers. Some people are pleased with just the stock maps and a lot of people like to ply a variety. My server has had over 200mb since 1.3 and has been one of the most populated ctf servers. Freezetag servers often have a ton of maps--probably more maps than any other come from freezetag servers.

Listen servers are great---one great thing about quake, you dont have to pay money to have a server. I despise the living shit out of coerced commerce. Especially now with the avaiulable bandwidth being increased it will only get better. One major aspect of quake that made me love the game from the start is the ability to host a server on my computers at home. Definitely id is going through the route of ads so i understand the need to promote dedicated servers to try to bring the corporate value in the game.

You don't have to pay anyone to start a dedicated server on your own computer (and never had to in any Quake game).
And then there you go : a working local game you and your friends can connect to, as if you'd started a listen, minus all the shit that comes with it.

True, guess it was a bit easy to think it was a push to influence people to rent lol. But, a lot of people dont know much about computers and the ability to run a ded server and log onto it on the same machine may prove more difficult. either having to use the win_allowMultipleInstances 1 or the fs_savepath commands.

As I also said on IRC, none of these are mine. (Exept the GL not exploading when direct hit, which has bugge me for a long period of time). I've written some down after going through a bunch of threads collecting stuff thats been talked and nagged about ever since 1.4.2 was released and some even before that. They do not reflect my oppinons or wishes, it's just a collection of feedback given in many threads spread in ESR over a period of time.

Some are issues/bugs and some are not. What it's most of here is up to each given reader as they reflect and think differently. That's why much things here doesn't have one straight answere. What you feel is laughable might be one persons wishes, issues bugs etc. as none here think or act alike.

What ID does with this thread is up to them, patch or not. I've just collected input as no thread existed, and that's what this is, a thread made for highlighting certain aspects of the game and get a discussion going. If you don't like it then don't read nor reply :)

Your probably playing with 30 or less ping... if you play 65- 100+ game turns to utter crap.

There isn't a good way around that. You'll just need to get a good ISP or connection. Netcode can't go that far, and if it does, I can assure you, it would not be "right".

CPMA is "right". Half of its praise is for its awesome hit registration. My ISP is fine I ping 45-20 on 4 major Hubs around me. I just know that alot of people are turned off by Q4 because of its netcode. Better netcode = more and more players

Its a bit tricky having to lead the shots, I agree. When I very first played quake briefly---i was swearing alot because I would see my crosshair on the body when i took the shot and wouldnt get it. I didn't understand at that time the lead of the shot. Its a bit tricky and I think a lot of people think there is a fault in the code. I know a lot of people think there is something wrong with my rail---when there isnt--its just the firerate is quicker and brings less accuracy and they attribute it to misfirings which really isn't true. But yeah the need to lead teh shots I tend to think is good actually. There are a lot of good railers with the leading---rail without hving to lead the shot would I imagine take a lot more power.

cpma's hit registration is so good that even missed hits are getting registrated. :P

cpma 60+ ping = more hits than q4 20 ping!

Problem with making it smaller is that you'll kill people much faster and easier with it. Atm you spawn and shoot under half your ammo away and still manages to kill some people with MG.

It's a good start weapon and you can kill a descent ammount with it, but making it even a better weapon to start with isn't such a good idea. A start weapon shouldn't be up with the top when it comes to damage and kills. It's a weapon to use when you don't have anything else, not the weapon of choice which it will become for many if you change it's spread.

I have always viewed teh rail to be the balance of the rocket. Games can get to suck when its just a rocketfest. If i sense a game is rocket only and not a mix I just dont play the game.

In that case, the point is that the weapon balance is fine (since its unchanged in q4max), its the prediction of other players positions that needs to be addressed.

This is mostly just because of how much we're working on Quake Live atm, and due to the size of our team. But there are outstanding issues from 1.4.2 that are worth addressing, and are actively being worked on. The matters of finalizing and delivering patches is greatly a matter of timing in relation to the other efforts currently underway.

yea, feels like it for me and some other ppl too. seems to me like i'm faster on truecarnage which is on 60fps. some american player also wondered why he was so slow when he was playing on a european 90fps server.

I think its unlikely that there is a real difference tho, unless the servers have tweeked settings (g_speed, pm_powerSlide etc).

You can test this using the q4max tutorbot - record a move at 60fps, and then play it back at 90fps.

There are minor differences in playback linked to precise timing of pressing buttons, but in general movement is identical, and jumps recorded at one FPS play back the same at a different FPS.

Yeah, I agree with zhakal on the inconsistencies due to different FPS. I know this one map in particular (wcp17) where you can make a rediculous slide with 60 fps running, and then the slide made near impossible under 90 fps. Its the reason why I prefer playing CTF at the default of 60 =D However, any faster would be overkill like Syncerror stated.

edit: my example is similar to the overbounce video, just a tad more extreme ;)

You can try the map TJ Home (training map) where some rampjumps, jumps, slides etc cannot/extremly hard to do with 60 but with 90 is possible/easier to do, same other way around.

Dunno why and still trying to find out why this is but it happens and that's why i mentioned it.

I think they dont even need to fit the hitbox as perfect as the given ones. I guess the q3 models doesnt always fit their hitbox as perfect as the q4 ones so it should be fine in q4 too.

Rather remove the posibility to have punkbuster turned on. It's outdated, makes the game laggy (even with sleep etc turned on/set at high values) and doesn't catch newer types of cheats which are made since the PB files are outdated.

Since most start at public servers (where it's mostly turned on), they will get a bad first impression of the game and most likely stop playing it.

ambientColour isnt intended for r_forceAmbient, its for the map ambient lights, which arent used for that. I imagine most players wouldnt want to use this.

yeah i would like to see a server option to limit spamming. I have had server crashes due to bindspams---some of the young kids who have binds with symbols and make sentences out of them---its like more than 2 alphabets long in characters per---and then they get into competition about binds and you have a slew of kids just binding out really bad---CRAZY!!!!!. Being able to limit that on teh server would be good--let the admin control it somehow.

ql is a lot of rail because of the weaponswitch (rocket/rail). It is fine regarding they nerfed the rail.
I think q4 weaponswitch is fine regarding the rail dmg (90) but maybe it would be more fun when it is exaxt the same behavior like ql (of course they will have to nerf the q4 rail dmg down too).

Actually not true. The weapon switch speed is faster in QL.

I think if a new patch ever does come out, they might incorporate delta ctf 2.0. Apparently phantazm11 had worked on maps for the new version, but we haven't heard anything of the mod in a long long time. Perhaps the new patch is when we'll see it.

Do NOT incorporate that mod into Q4, there are several reason why this isn't the way to go.

Nothing negative towards Detla but mods are mods and shouldn't be indegrated into the game. Keep them seperated. That way those who don't like the mod can still play the game as it is. Forcing players to play a mod they don't want to play isn't the way to get players to play this game.

Crouch sliding up ramps isn't really a big deal, I don't know why someone would leave over it, unless I'm missing something in CTF which I don't play much? Other than that isn't the movement pretty much the same as 1.3?

Also people probably moan about wanting the 1.3 lg, but its too long range! And in 1.3 it felt easier to use because of the larger hitboxes. I totally disagree with these people :P and I don't think they would like it if it was back at 1.3 either, except the lg whores maybe :P

no the range doesnt make such a difference. The range was lowered from 768 (q3 value) to 736. 32 units difference!
The lg is low-mid range atm but its less useful at midrange. The 1.3 range was perfect for mid range fights (you can force hardly all situations to mid-range that was the reason for overusing the lg in 1.3).

btw i play mostly duel and i hate to crouchslide the stairs on monsoon at ra. I hit the the roof quite often what disturbs me. That is my reason why i want 1.3 crouchslides.

don't you think modify Monsoon would be simpler than modify the whole game just because you don't like one part of one map ?

maybe I manage those situations quite badly which results in hitting the roof.

I really like the crouchslides/rampslide and rampjumps atm. Althought it feels weird when your slide accelation stairs upwards is faster than the usal slides.

I don't really know what you mean, I can hit the roof but I have to be pretty unlucky, and usually trying to go too fast :D I'm sure there are drawbacks to the 1.4.2 movement but I personally think it has more positives than negatives overall. All I can say is, if you have problems in those areas, maybe watch a demo of Hell or something, and see how he tackles it, and just try and copy ;)

I already mentioned I really like the movement at the moment but its not acceptable to change my style of sliding. I dont think my slides are too good.

If you slide up the stairs then don't touch the ramps ;p. I never ever hit the roof.
