Interest in a Quake Live LAN? Yes or no. (30 comments)
Posted by BlaD3 @ 04:58 CST, 2 December 2011 - iMsg
Drawing a line from recent posts after the Dreamhack Winter tournaments, I was wondering a few things.

Taking out the lack of support given by ID software towards Quake Live LAN abilities and mode improvements, I am curious to know if there would be a Quake Live event in Europe featuring maybe duel, TDM and CTF together, would people show up for that?

I've checked out several LAN's still active near my location, so mainly Dutch and Belgium ones. There are some, although rare, that still organize relatively big events (500 to 1500 people) with tournaments like Starcraft 2, CS 1.6, LoL and CoD.

Some of these used to feature Quake 3 (I miss Drome and Netgamez though :( ) in some way or another. Not much prize money, usually hardware from sponsors.

But let's take this situation as example:

There will be a LAN featuring Quake Live in duel, TDM and CTF game modes held in the Netherlands/Belgium. Accessible for 32 duelers and 16 teams in both modes.

Pros
* Tournaments are well organized and the schedule allows for every one to play their games, without having to drop certain modes due to schedule clashes.
* High competitive value due to a lot of players attending.
* Location is in Europe (Netherlands/Belgium) and attending/traveling will be ~100-150 euro per player.
* Everything is announced 3 to 4 months in advanced.
* Held from Friday till Sunday.
* People can bring their own sleeping bags/stuff to accommodate sleeping at the event's location w/o needing hotel (the LAN way :p).

Cons
* Prize money is low, hardware prizes are available as compensation (sponsors).
* Players have to spend the 100/150 euro's to get there, but have a big chance of not winning anything.
* Players/teams have to be organized to get to the event, they need to know how to book cheap tickets, especially international teams.

Problems
* Finding an organization (existing LAN event) to pick up the game.
* Finding sponsors to support the event and provide hardware for use and prizes for the tournaments.
* Location might be a problem, but I've seen most LAN events have a set expo hall they rent every time.
* Lack of PC's on location to accommodate all players to play their matches.

---------------

There is probably more Pros/Cons/Problems, but I think existing events could take away a lot of the Problems. I've searched around a bit and there are still organizations active holding events, just with other games than Quake Live.

If I take Stermy's UGC for example, it looks really complicated and he really tried hard to set up his own event with pulling his strings, but it wasn't without flaws.

But just say if it was possible to hold an event with Quake Live in there, would people show up in a situation where it is mainly for fun/competition and not to drag in a 5k euro prize cheque. If it adapted the 'old' definition of LAN and not something similar to Intel Extreme Masters.

I think all in all is, do people care about the game enough to show up at a decent organized event BUT don't expect to make money out of it, rather spend it for the experience?

Haha :]

Seems they are getting ready to compete with DoTa2. Sick amount of money though, especially when you compare it to what FPS games get :p

Changing mousegrip, easy or? (20 comments)
Posted by BlaD3 @ 14:33 CST, 9 February 2011 - iMsg
Hey all,

I was wondering if changing to a different grip holding the mouse is easily done, especially in Quake Live. I've been playing with the same grip for over 8 years, but it is really weird and unergonomic. It tires my hands out very fast.

It however feels like the most effective regarding movement, aim and stuff. But I don't want to lose a lot of my play by switching to a different grip.

Can anyone share or give me some tips regarding this? Did you change grip and it worked out better or worse?

I don't find a lot of posts about this on the web and well since esreality is mostly Quake related gaming, might as well ask here ;]

I use the WMO 1.1a, which is small and light. But I basically use a combination of palm grip and finger grip and hold the mouse really tight. I sometimes try to practice to hold it a bit lighter, but if you are used to it for 8 years it is hard :L

Cheers

Hand cramps while playing Quake Live (44 comments)
Posted by BlaD3 @ 17:24 CDT, 14 May 2010 - iMsg
So I've been having these cramps for over a few years now and it's pretty annoying. I was wondering if anyone else experiences cramps around the center of their palm of their hand they use their mouse with?

I have tried different mice to see if it would solve it, but none actually did the trick. I think it might be the way I grip the mouse, but I've never done differently. I only get these cramps while playing a game like Quake Live where I have to move a lot.

I have several things I noticed while playing that might help in causing it:

- Using weapons like lightning gun that involves a lot of tracking makes my hand clamp really tight to the mouse to track.

- I start gripping my mouse in a different position and end up holding it differently during gameplay. It basically slips to the front of my hand (fingers) and leaves a big gap between the center of my palm and the mouse.

It's quite annoying, because I get either distracted by the little pains I get from the cramps during a game and I can't play more than 1 hour before it starts hurting and I need a break and stretch everything.

Does anyone with the same experience have tips? I find it pretty hard changing grip style to play with and wonder if it's doable if you are used to palm gripping for 10 years.

I also was thinking of training my hands and fingers with daily exercises using for example the Power Ball.

I think my skill is actually suffering from this as well, because of the little pains and it's not fun anymore to play a lot :(

Any suggestions? :X (except quit gaming ;[ )

Also nice to know:

- I use a pretty low sensitivity, but it looks fast because I use my entire arm to move and wrist to aim.

- I currently use a wheel mouse optical 1.1a.

How to play back QL demos

Because more people keep asking for several demos of me playing mid/2nd def in CTF, I decided to upload the demo pack that I give everyone that asks.

I hope it can help out some people that would like to see some basic CTF mid playing, without having to look for it.

Some demos might be ePeen enlarging, but it also displays how I play in somewhat the best way. Except qzctf7, where my team changed tactics and the demo I wanted to link for that didn't record when we played it.

Anyway have fun
