I heard great things about this map in Quake 2, but it seems somewhat flawed in Quake 4. There is ZERO incentive for a leading player to leave the MEGA/YA (House) armor when they are in control (and up a few frags) and all they have to do drop down, pick up the other YA, then repeat. While this is going on they can easily cover the railgun (As they have an almost infinite supply of slugs, then the opponent seems to be giving away frags in a desperate attempt to regain some sort of control of the power point on the map. I always wondered why Willits placed the RG in the water section on the original and so far out of reach, now I'm starting to see why.

yeh there is WAY to much rail ammo in the main room which already has mh/ya/shaft and lots of shaft ammo. hell once people get better aim you could prolly just sit there shafting all day long and win.

Yep, shame people are such boring fucks, even on public.

I played some public tournament stuff, and the fragging yard (?)... Had this one opponent which I totally outaimed with every weapon, outmoved with ease and had more than twice his ping... He just stood close to the rail and tried to take as many YA's as possible. Hide hide, peek out, rail, hide hide. He even won after what, 10-15 minutes of doing that. Then he called ME boring for some reason...

So yeah, later we met again and although despising it I sank to his level just to show him; almost only railing... Hopla, owned and disconnected when he knew he couldn't catch up within the timelimit anymore.

So sad, hope something is done... Because at the moment it depends 100% on who you play against, sometimes it is insanely fun (like yesterday again Borka here on esr, 1 point game [yes i lost, gg :D]), and sometimes it's just the depressing feeling that you have the choise of standing behind a corner and fall asleep or move out of there and get railed by the other guy who possesses infinite patience.

About the edge, yup yup. Played against iceclimbers (tox/phant) and it was really fun, they didn't really care much about playing super super defensive tactic take everything z0mg, and we still got mashed (tox on fire...) and it was fun. Then we played some other swedish fuckers, most boring ever. Both in YA/MH. Constantly. Some minor adventures to grab rg/rl/quad, that was it. Zzz.

Really hope something can be done, some mod changing some vital item placings on certain maps etc...

dunno bout boring, but imho you cant blame ppl for exploiting advantages given by a map.
maybe removing all of the ammo boxes + health bubbles would make it playable?

the edge should be like it was in quake2, with three piles of boxes etc, and idd not so much slugs, but , the other weapons are well placed

Yeah, a bunch of the other top pros as well. I don't have that many Thresh demos so I was mainly thinking of Blue vs Shub and the like :/

I think I've seen all Thresh demos, and none of them were low-scoring matches. What matches are you thinking about?

Annoying you cant see the score :( I think the pov won but with what?

Press ESC and go to the players menu. The scores are there.

But I agree, pretty weird. The demo only shows the scoreboard when the guy actually playing it pressed the scoreboard key.

Yes, that map is suckage2k6 and i hope that it never gets played seriously (again), although alot of people doesnt seem to realise it since its the only map they can win without any effort and just rely on the first spawn instead..

we need alot of communitymaps thats for sure..

I'm in the final stages of finishing a pro version of the Edge, well I say pro, I'm just using the title as most players associate it with the q3 duel maps.

I'm not entirely convinced that map can EVER be a fair duel map, it's a nice looking design, but there seem to be very few areas where you can engage in an even fight. And as you showed, once you are a few frags up, theres little incentive to leave the YA/MEGA.
I have reduced this problem A LOT, but I still think when the bright skins come along this maps is going to be the sort which returns some very inconsistent scores.

Cant you just move the MH to the room with haste or close to it? Would force people to move down to that corner also sometimes, or atleast make it an option to do so. Now you just need YA/MH-room and grab the rail.

Kinda like the idea, that area is like forgotten :/

Agree on that , something that matters should be put there instead of haste.. (maybe a red armor? we need more armors! :p )

Yeh some fair points. In the end I did something along the same lines.

Firstly, I wanted to keep the YA and MEGA in the same room.
The reason for this is simple. If people are not playing the pro version then they will get confused if they go onto a server and it's not there, so my main priority was to keep stay close to the original weapon/item placements.


however, I did, move the YA from the main room and put it nexto the where the haste is. I also DELETED the Rail Gun slugs from inside the MEGA room, and also deleted the ones up near the Grenade Launcher.
Why?

Well, that means the person who gets teh rail has to either go up the rail jump pad to get more (RISKY) or they actually have to visit other parts of the level, namely the haste room.

I also increased the spawn time of the MEGA to 60 seconds from 35, that way there is less incentive to hang around in that room.
I also made it so that you can spam nades from the where the Grendade Laucher is, down and into the area where the YA and MEGA is.
I think it was for the best and I'm really confident if you and Dr Doom played another duel on the version I made, then it would be a lot more fun as tehe MEGA ROOM is no longer as powerful as it was.
ANd even if you have a bit more health from the mega, if an enemy knows you are in there and thaey are stacked with 100/180, they could make lfe tricky by spamming nades down the shoot and comproming your YA and MH, which were strategically placed.
Don't take my word for it, play him again on my version and see what happens:)

i watched the final game of this tourney where tevet got ass handed to him and it wasnt a boring demo. The guy he was playing had a great aim and was not restricting himself to the MH room.

no he wasnt restricting himself to the mh ya room, instead he was walking the same path over and over again, and, incidentally, that path took him to that room every 10 seconds or so.

I just saw some vids of q2dm1 (Q4) and it wasnt true to Q2's. We need the rail room, not in the same room as RL. A complete copy of Q2dm1 (q2), all the same..even non transparent water for rg area and no haste or bs like that would blow me away.
Off topic--The RG does 100 damage again? I can't stand the 75 crap that Q3 has too.

Christ, why don't you just cease your whining about "Over The Edge" and go play some RA2/RA3 and head for RA4 when it's due? If you whish no strategically vital point existing in a map, then it would seem like a plausible choice for you. If you are behind and your opponent controls the MH (comme il faut) then you have to be PATIENT and search for mistakes in the opponents tactical movement. Everything is NOT about amphetamine-infused speed.
Download some demos from Q2-players playing "The Edge" and you'll see some wonderful games and brilliant moves to regain control.

ive noticed that edge already has become some sort of dm6 of q4 wich sucks, all tdm clans seems to wanna play there in pracs and alot wanna play 1on1 there, idont get why its such a bad map both for 4on4 and 1on1s. but still half of europe wanna play it 24/7.cant we just forget the map and please no pro remakes. map been played to death in q2 already...

Becasue most have played it in other games and they feel very comfortable playing there. I agree, it's a flawed design from a 1v1 POV and to be honest I think the map is not good at all for Q4.

Tim Willits made this map in the 90's, I always believed that q3 dm6 was his follow up from this map and I think he got it pretty much right, all apart from RA and Mega spawn of course:)

ye agree i think dm6 works better both in tdm and 1on1 although not perfect, but really hope we will see some new good maps made for especially tdm, 1on1 maps seems to be coming out already

I didn't play Q2 and this map at all tho for me at least it's a good demo and nice rg. I want more TeveT's demos ;>.

Q4 = almost instagib = boring game for unskilled hitscan whores.
