Depends on what you are trying to achieve. Bruce Lee is famous for reducing his body fat levels to ridiculously low levels to help make him faster, ironically this killed him, since his body fat was so low that haschish (spelling?) made his brain swell.

yeh i only use bodyweight right now, i've never been a fan of weights. i'm adapting to my natural physique and atm it's not the "heavy + big muscles" kind of. The day i get a little more bodyweight, i'm gonna start with it :)

this coming from someone who has done a bit of resistance training over the past few years... I just think lean is better and would have preferred to do endurance bodyweight exerciese now. I have wobbly tits now I've stopped curling, benching and pushups. Should start only push-ups again... :/

ok bulky can be fast in certain sports, but running is just channeled one way: forward. I dont think it would work for a footballer, or a swimmer and a bulky upperbody certainly wouldn't help a cyclist. Poub says he does karate, I could never really see a bulky figure being the optimum for karate which requires a lot of movemnt and dexterity.

The notion that weight training slows you down and decreases flexibility, dexterity and agility is massively outdated. Lifting can benefit competitors in any sport, although the particular exercises and volume of training will obviously vary. Participants at the top level of all sports you mentioned would do some form of weight training, although this approach has only been introduced in recent years as players have been informed of the benefits. Taking football as an example, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Christian Vieri, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Patrick Vieira and Clarence Seedorf are all examples of players that possess a tremendously powerful upper body yet still display considerable speed, poise and skill. In karate, weight training would be of particular use as despite the wider public's perception of martial artists all being little weedy blokes that can own people twice their size purely by good technique, having considerable muscular strength is also hugely advantageous. Martial arts competitions usually have many weight divisions and those at the heavier end of the scale tend to be built like brick shithouses, while still retaining much of the flexibility, speed and technique of those in the lower weight categories.

The more muscle MASS you have, the slower you get. Muscles are heavy. In order to get BULKY you need muscle mass. And it WILL make you slower compared if you build muscles for speed.

YES, because speed has NOTHING at all to do with your strength to weight ratio. So the fact that strength correlates with somewhat size is meaningless. Oh also it's impossible to train with weights for power and speed, which is why no elite athletes at all would do olympic style weightlifting.

I found after 2 months hardcore training it was easy to obtain a muscular looking chest due to all the fat loss + situps for 10 minutes in the evenings.

atm i've got a program which i do mon-fri which consists of alot of cardo like running, bike, swimming and some weights. Only to strenghten what i have atm, don't intend building up body mass.

my routine if there is no regular training or a party or if i'm ill that night is sets of 30 fast push-ups with 3 min rest in between, repeat at least 5 times, max 7, in between doing some leg exercises.. at the weekend or whenever weather/time allows it workout in the forest, sprint, jogging and some random stuff.. thats all the body exercise i do. besides that i'm doing different coordination exercises.

if you want to add some spice, read a long article eg in national geographic and do those 30 push-ups after each paragraph, the trick is, reading the article trains your perception of details and gets you used to using your brain even when under heavy stress :)

btw you try doing pushups with just your knuckles? this gym i go to, one of the regulars tells me pushups with your knuckles are good for strengthening the wrists. i don't do pushups, thinking i should start. i lift, but bleh pushups piss me off.

I'm going to start doing light workouts in addition to my heavy ones. pushups, crunches, stretches and jogging. will attempt to turn it into a morning routine.

here's a picture i took today of myself. i know how to eat. i was 6'0 126 lbs 2 years ago and as of yesterday i'm 6'0 and 169 lbs. i can guarantee you i'm stronger than this stick of bones who does pushups and sits on his computer. since all he does is pushups, he must have a strong bench. on thursday i repped 135lbs x10, 185lbs x10, 205lbs x8, 225lbs x6 for flat barbell bench. the thursday before that i did 75lbs x10, 85lbs x8, 100lbs x5 for flat bench dumb-bells. doing pushups and eating 1000 calories a day wont get you that strength, or lean muscle mass i have. also, i workout every muscle of my body, not just my chest. this guy just has low body fat, he's definately skinny and has definition, but he's not muscular by any means.

nice definition man, im going for a "similar" look. i used to be quite bulky and a found it hard to lose the fat around my belly, but didnt care cos i had pretty big arms and pecs. nowadays i would rather have the cut definition. im not quite as defined as u, but i have a bit more muscle, im just trying to lose the fat whilst maintaining lean body mass, which is proving hard :) i stick mainly to bench presses, curls, press-ups, shoulder presses and a few variations on sit-ups.

ppl always need different things from their bodies - of course an athlete like yourself isnt going to be interested in getting huge biceps etc, im going for the cosmetics, which requires a bit of high-load free weights and a bit of body-weight exercise intermixed.

well a lot of you are missing the point, i'm not training for a good looking body, it's a nice side-effect, thats all. i'm doing this conditioning to be fit for fullcontact sparring, SD training, ground work etc. The people I train with are usually older and about 10 kg heavier than me and they work as hard as i do concerning martial arts, i can still keep up due to my bodyweight focused workouts which give me that extra flexibility and body-control i need to compete against people heavier+stronger than me.

maz1nger i strongly recommend you do NOT do push-ups with only knuckles, all you're gonna get is arthritic hands and wear the tissues in your hand down. there's reasons why boxers wear gloves, read some stuff from bas rutten, he also says that in mma and free fights hitting someones head with a fist/knuckles will most likely break your hand, hands are just too fragile. if you insist, do it on a soft ground like a carpet etc, that will strengthen your wrist without too much damage to your knuckles..

Your body is ok if you ask me, now it is just conditioning and lots of cardio, though as you are learning I suggest do some weights and bulk up just a little. As your MA skills develop the strength will be coming along as well. Though (you should know this) if you want to build up strength in kicking for example, then don’t just assume that it's all leg extensions and leg curls etc. Since the hips/waist and lower back (if I remember correctly) play a very high role and whatnot. But I assume you know the score. You are better off asking someone in person, Unless your instructor(s) are into weights then I wouldn’t ask them, online is ok you just get lots of different opinions. I personally would ask a gym instructor or someone you know who is experienced in the field you are looking for; someone that has been there and done it.

i will MAYBE start using weights after i can perform all the bodyweight exercises there are with reasonable reps, one armed pushups, one legged squats, rafter pullups, spidermans, hindu pushups, dips, one armed handstand pushups etc etc the list goes on. if i have control of my body i will start building up from there, before that it's pointless, that's my philosophy. either that or the bodyweight workouts stop making me tired and i mysteriously stop growing muscles from doing them, THEN i will do weights for sure :)

A lot of karate guys do press-ups on their knuckles to show, first, that they are hard and laugh at pain, and secondly, to move nerves over from the top of the knuckle. By the way, I found an excellent way of building bulk around the shoulders and such was to spend the best part of 15 years as an unskilled casual labourer on building sites. Absolute gobledegook. Doing manual labour doesn't build muscles. I would class it as an aerobic endeavour since you're moving around a lot. You will burn calories ie. probably fat or the chip shop meal you ate for lunch. You will lose weight (probably), doh.

heh, the truth is that you can't get 'a six pack' unless you have really lucky genetics or starve yourself like the parent poster. I was 6'0" 175lb til I lost alot of weight (not really intentionally) and got down to like 148lb for a while, and I did cardio every day, and my abs every other day for a few months. if you have to rely on cardio, it's not gonna even work. I know I have nice abs as I can do anything with my damn torso, but since I don't have my own kitchen/house I can't eat all that great. it's hard to find frozen foods and shit that's actually healthy, but I manage with the knowledge I have. it's still quite hard to get any significant amount of definition, which I have yet to attain. however, I do have 16 inch biceps, a 15 inch neck, and 14 inch calves. it kindof sucks in my fucking house though, I need my own place so I can workout regularly, I don't even have room for my equipment here.

i'm not starving myself at all, i'm healthy but underweight, talked to people (doctors too) about it and they all say my body isnt finished with 20 years, at least in my case.

It's a huge difference if you do exercises for the sake of doing exercises or if you actually do them out of real motivation or with another goal than "getting muscle mass" and looking muscular etc. i have 0 experience with doing exercises for the sake of themselves, when i'm training with my mates we dont go "hey man i do 150 push-ups every evening and look how my biceps is flexing *flex biceps*" if you do that as an outsider, you get invited for sparring to see what you can do with what you have and thats a WHOLE different story.

btw, everyone can cook some noodles or rice with some stuff in it thats not from the fridge, thats no excuse :)
room is no excuse either, and the idea of needing a separate room for the "equipment" sounds very strange to me.. bodyweight will bring you to what your body naturally looks like with less fat/more muscles and not bulk you up like weight training does, which often looks artificial. look at some russian judo/wrestling elite fighters and then compare them to american judo/wrestling elite fighters, you'll see what i mean :)

I'm not going to read the rest of your post, and you certainly can't tell me anything I don't already know. I can gain/lose 5lb in less than a week anytime I want, I've done it a million times. it's not really cuz I'm an easy gainer although I do have good genetics, I'm not your typical person. I find that kind of training best for what I'm doing too. I was into muy thai boxing for about 2 years, bujinkan budo taijutsu for 5 years and now I'm just training wing tsun since 2 years back. I just can't have big biceps for my wing tsun due to the reason that I would become way to slow if I were any bulkier. I'm 20 too, body is still growing and will never do any heavy weight lifting ever :P

Anyway, keep it up man.

nice MA background, i basically wasted my time in karate, i'm discovering the wonders of muay thai, wing tsun, jkd etc etc for slightly more than a year now. i learn/absorb stuff really fast due to the karate training but thats really the only thing..

I felt almost the same with bujikan budo taijutsu (ninjutsu), but hey it's kinda cool and fun when we got to learn how to handle weapons. I'd say my favourites is the bo, the nunchakus and the manriki gusari (almost as a nunchaku though the chain is about 3 ft with shorter handles) due to the "flashy" effect it has when you swing'em around you ;) ppl's is like: "woha wtf?" when I show them what it's all about.

The weight + slow thing is greatly dependent on how far you talk your bulk. If you look at Olympic runners if i am correct (state me so otherwise) their legs are a lot bigger than what they look (talking about sprinters)

Strength through martial arts is a whole different thing even in boxing. I know a bloke who was 1st in Europe left and right arm wrestling champ (100k) for 6 years on the trot and got 6th at some global champs in the states. He has been training kickboxing/muay thai where I have, and his power is nothing whatsoever compared to others that are not even half his size. It’s all technique, the weight is nothing until the technique is there. I am more or less over 3 stone heavier than my instructor yet his power and speed insanely exceeds mine.

And by the way: if you like body conditioning: muay thai man!

and get a 'six pack' without any serious muscles mass. the problem is, though, that muscle mass isn't nearly
as easy to obtain as some people might think. immortal, you also cannot correlate strength with mass directly, but proportionately.
it is my theory that the human muscle has a 200% efficieny - so if you're able to bench press 250 pounds, then that doesn't necessarily mean that have you more muscle mass than poub or whomever.
since the average american male has around 120 to 130 pounds of mass, then he should be able to bench press around 250 pounds (200% efficiency). this is just mental and emotional training - adrenaline, intensity, focus, and repitition (the most important).
while brute strength and mass does help to throw around weight, it's certainly not the most significant factor, because your muscles probably aren't being utilized to their maximum efficiency at any given time.
I think, on a general scale, the average male has within 5 pounds of muscle mass per inch of height (obviously depending on genetics and ceilings high or low), with the mean being 5'9" and ~130lb.
so, then, the average 5'6" male should be able to maximize his flat barbell press with 230 pounds, while the 'mean' 5'9" male should be able to max his at 260 pounds, and the 6' male should be able to max his at 290 pounds without any added muscle mass.
this is conditioning or 'training' as you may like to call it. so, here, I am trying to demonstrate that mass does not necessarily equate strength - a smaller person with superior condition can clearly be stronger, immortal.
however, presuming you have about 10% body fat, this would put your muscle mass at around 150 pounds, with a theoretical maximum then of 300 pounds, while I'm estimating your current maximum (180 / .75) to be around 250 pounds. (all rounded up or down accordingly)
so it could be that you are stronger than poub, but if he were 140 pounds at 7%, then he should be able to rep 260 pound once. now I'm not sure what your exact max is, but it seems that in that instance poub would be more efficient.
however, the key element in my mind to conditioning the three, main 'heavy weight' excercises is repitition - so barring that poub is lying about his body-weight only regimen, then it is likely that you are in the right to say you are stronger than poub.
however, again, I am not sure what you suspect to accomplish by this. is the fit more fit if he is larger? would you say that Lance Armstrong is less fit than Arnold Schwarzenegger? Apples to oranges, dear.
so, in the end, you are right - it's very easy to get a low body fat percentage, and a lot harder to put on mass and maintain definition with that mass, but whatever your particular reason for that is should be paramount to the kind of particular excercise in which you partake. (three P-words in a row, thank you, thank you)

Way to pick a good workout regimen, I'm a weightlifter (oly-lifting), bodybuilder and wannabe gymnast and I am about to start CrossFit myself...

170cm - 79kg - 7-10% Bodyfat - 19 years

I wouldn't consider myself that muscular, although my BMI is over 27 now and those pictures were taken today give you an idea how useless that formula is... A few years ago I was lazy and trained doing only push-ups and eventually accomplished 100 of them full rom in 4 minutes. It gave me a really shitty physique after a while and resulted in a push/pulling strength imbalance.

I've been lifting weights for 9 months I was 71kg last fall at a much higher bodyfat (my abs hardly showed). I wasn't a noobie when I started though because I had strength trained and had results in the past as a track athlete.

These pics are disturbingly homo.

Anyway to the point, for those figures (170cm, 79kg) I would've thought you'd have more mass than what i can see.

Alot of the mass is in my legs and glutes but if I photographed them and put it here that would obviously push the homo way too far.

edit: the planche picture doesn't show it well but my calves are 41 & 42 cm (left and right) my quads are 57 & 59 cm measured at half-way between knee and hip joints.
