That said some mice could slim down in comparison. Zowie and Logitech are very conservative, aka. a little heavy, sadly the IE3.0 refresh named Intellimouse Pro is as heavy as the original which honestly sucks 100g is too heavy for long use.

What you could do with ZA13, from low effort to high effort and from clean to messier:
You can just disable the side buttons. You can open the mouse, remove the microswitches and quick-glue the buttons down. Remove the sidebuttons completely, glue over the holes with something and put a grip tape of some sort over it on the outside.
Finally, frankemouse a WMO with the ZA13 sensor

I use the new Microsoft Pro IntelliMouse. It's an exact replica of the old 3.0 but with a gaming sensor. It's honestly great. No bullshit, no drivers. Just a great mouse.

edit: oh yeah and it's super cheap. Do NOT get the non-pro version. The sensor blows.

Still have a old 518 (1800dpi) laying around. Recently tried to use it sometimes and cant believe how bad it is or that I used to think this was good.

Feels pretty bad. imprecise and stuttery. Has the horizontal prediction a big negative. Need to use the USB Hz hack is a pain in the ass and it still feels bad at 500hz.

Any mouse with no prediction/angle snapping will be a huge improvement. Even WMO 1.1 feels better as it has no prediction, just that its dpi and Hz also suck.

Just buy something around the shape/size you want that has a semi-good sensor with no prediction and native 1000Hz. Logitech G mice are fine if you can find them on special/discount. I use one of the cheaper ones G302 still works fine, much better than mx518.

Edit: Get optical sensor, avoid laser.

As a former mx500 / 510 / 518 user, I am more than happy with the Logitech g403 which kind of has a similar shape / grip, but is way better.

2 years later would just like to say that I recently got a xtrfy RGB M42 and it's the best mouse I've ever had. Just disable the RGB lights and use it at it's base 400 dpi and you're good to go. Light solid with 2 shell options to fit to handsize great mouse feet - smooth tracking and great button postion and action.

Go with any wireless Vaxee mouse and everything else is for peasants.

Using the Vaxee NP-01S wireless, actually glad they decided to make a smaller version, best thing I’ve ever used. The Vaxee Outset AX wireless is the other option in terms of wireless. More ergo shaped than the NP and definitely feels a bit larger.

Would never look at any other brand if this is the standard for Vaxee. Blows everything else out the water.

actually, in his defence, Vaxee consists of the original Zowie mouse creators. Far from a noname brand actually unless you don't know much about gaming mice nowadays. Their shapes are similar to Zowie (which makes sense since they were behind the initial Zowie mice) but with the latest sensor and overall just feels more premium than Zowie nowadays. Would definitely recommend trying them out.

Their PA mousepad is actually one of the better mousepads on the market, depending on what you prefer ofcourse.

Vaxee is a great brand, but the recommendation of wireless (140€ apparently) and 'everything else is for peasants' is ridiculous.

First recommendation would be wired, also there are many other competent brands, like Zowie, Logitech, ..

After switching from wired to wireless I’d never recommend any wired mouse at this point. 80 quid and you can get the xm2we for example so it’s not really ripping your wallet at that point I’d think.

Wired is totally fine for most. Any new cables are pretty soft, close to paracord replacements.

I'd always recommend an inexpensive, sturdy and proven item before the luxory model.

A wireless mouse is like a gaming laptop - understandable choice if you prioritize the convenience, but still, you're paying more money for less performance.

The less performance part has been debatable for a while now.
Not a single person here would be able to tell the difference. You pay more because of the technology it requires, not because of its performance per say.

And yeah sure, wireless is about convenience but I wouldn’t ever want to go back to wired, always got in the way even with bungees, so to some extent I wouldn’t even call it “just” a convenience thing. It literally made a difference.

Don’t quite agree with the laptop comparison, as with a laptop you’re sacrificing a lot more vs using a desktop, whereas with a wireless mouse you really only gain more instead of sacrificing something for more convenience.

It’s really subjective though, friend of mine put his lamzu mini on the side to use his xm1r again until the xm2w releases (whenever that may be).
