Sounds cool, but one thing I will say on skins, is that within a week I had changed all my characters to the greyest most camouflage as possible because it made them harder to see.

They were NOT the one's I wanted to use, but I'll take improved game performance over aesthetics any day.
As a result, the rewards for opening up the chests became very irrelevant. Plus if you're trying to build up an IP of a character, you risk harming that by muddying their core identity.

P.S.
If you want to keep players in the game, add a tower defense mode to the game levels where you have to guide legions of your characters through a level, or setup a level to defend against legions of opposing enemies/champions. That game type is like crack and might allow them to move onto the FPS option.

I don't believe a game should only offer one style of play these days, and you'll soon see :].

according to their stats 75% of tdm matches and with a score difference of less than 15. doesnt line up with what i experienced but i guess its hard to judge because you remember the games with messed up balance so much more

This has been my experience so far, usually very good team balance, until someone quits.

But just like in QL, the main problem is the quitters. However well the ranking system works, it goes out the window when an important player quits (either the "carrier" or the "feeder" quitting will practically freeze one of the teams' score :))

The quitting problem is exaggerated by inability to switch teams mid-game and how long it takes the game to fill the spots (so you play 4v1 for 2 minutes until they import 3 players from the lobby, at which time it may be impossible for them to come back).

It's nice that people can't just choose which games to join, so no q_adrian in this game \o/

Also they have the potential to pick who will fill in the gaps (from the queue of waiting players, pick by skill rating).

So just fix all the needless waiting and loading slowness and it will be glorious?

Maybe they could make it so that if a player on your team quits on purpose or DC's, the rest of the players on your team don't lose ranking. But the quitter would. And then the other team, since they'd likely win anyway, receives their ranking increase like normal.

And if that could not work, make somehow so that we're not punished because of quitters.

You're assuming the system is based purely on wins/losses, but I don't remember a system like that being used, ever :)

In QL, for team games, I think at first they used score per minute, then moved to something based on position within one team - but didn't care about wins/losses for skill calculation. QLRanks/QLStats did care about wins for the Glicko/TrueSkill implementations, but those systems care more about who you're up against than just the result.

In none of those systems would you "lose ranking" just because you lost. Good player will still top their team, end up with KDR>1 etc.

And the quitter isn't supposed to just "lose ranking" - that's the worst idea ever - they need to be rated according to skill for all games, otherwise quitting becomes a way to game the system into letting you stomp noob servers, or at least stack teams.



BUT! QC already has a game currency - favor. You don't get any if you quit, and even the worst player gets like 500 for playing a 10 minute match.

So there ALREADY IS a system in place that should discourage quitting from games.

What I would suggest is to present the player who pressed "quit" not just "Are you sure? Yes/No" dialog, but something like "You've already earned 347 favor in this game. Quitting will lose you those points. Are you sure? Yes/No".

You know, just make it more clear so people get discouraged in that moment, not realize later.

... and maybe after more consecutive quits you start loosing percentages of your already earned favors.

As long as you can't get less than 0 - we don't want any minigames for quitters :D

Also, sometimes you get a free backpack. I never figured out whether it's random or based on some achievements, but you can make it another perk of being a good player.

Also, quit 10 times and don't get daily challenges.

A lot of the games end up with 15 or less difference cause the score for the players on the losing team is typically 25-15, 17-16, 5-16, 2-18. Most of the games are boring where one team has multiple good players and the other team has 1 that is supposed to carry the rest. The other 25% is typically 75-20 or 70-30 games.

A glorious game would need a working engine (no frame drops), a working netcode (rocket fix =/= working netcode) and raw mouse input.

I'm sorry but on low setting the game looks 10x worse than OW, and runs 10x worse. They need optimize the shit out of this engine before I consider playing this for more than just 5mins a month.
People have been telling them about their crappy core tech since CB patch 1 too, but they either don't bother or don't know how to make it work.

Kinda funny looking back at the first marketing stuff they put out. With 120hz and no exuses for console support and yadayadayada. Well, here we are already in EA and the tech feels like early alpha.

The early closed beta was unplayable and after a few days I left and didn't play for nearly 2 months. i've been playing again the last 2-3 weeks and the game is a lot much smoother now. It's actually playable, it doesn't take 10 minutes to load to the main menu, you can find games quickly, the party system works a lot better etc.

That's because of the follow killer thing. If you spectated a TDM game with follow killer on it would be the same mess to watch for players who aren't familiar with it.

I'm getting familiar with Sacrifice as I play it, but I agree that they need a system for the spectators. Either a way to only follow one player, or the ability to see what all other players are doing.

A minimap like in CS:GO would be a good start.

The "mess" is the same and it's caused by cumulation of several factors:
- no damage to team mates, so you spam carelessly, which means people die faster and less clearly to the viewers (you see two guys fighting and suddenly everything explodes, looks confusing and random),
- lots of weapons on the maps, so you always have something strong to spam with, or just join fights; many opponents with weapons mean people die faster (duh),
- stupid health/armor/hitbox system making everyone impossibly weak (small champions can take mega+heavy and immediately die from just 2 rockets; big champions can stack up but die after 3 seconds of 60% shaft),

Proper TDM would have all three fixed. But to make Sacrifice more watchable, you could fix just one and make a huge difference.

Yes, spectator features are absent and the spectator HUD is garbage (can't tell who I'm spectating, which side they're on and who are the enemy). But it would be easier to follow if the game was more tdmish - silent/careful times of buildup towards easily identifiable rushes.

Of course that idea of spectators always replaying best runs of the last minute would help without making the game better. But they won't do that either, so :)

While I'd welcome CTF I hope Sacrifice won't die. I enjoy playing it with my mates with audio comms, it involves coordination and tactics probably in an even more advanced way than CTF. No disrespect to CTF though, it would be great to have that too.

Sacrifice is probably the only reason I enjoy QC atm. I'm not that big into duel anymore these days as I prefer team modes, and TDM is better without champions and abilities like in QL.

They shouldn't scrap sacrifice. Sacrifice is fun. You just need to understand the concept and coordinate with the players you play with, voice comms help a lot with that.

I would love to see some Quake 1 maps make a return (q2 as well) instead of just Quake 3 maps, it's like they've forgot there was games before it.

Could make maps based off of Q1 DM6 and E1M2 possibly, they could be more in the spirit of rather than direct copies like ZTN and Q3 DM6. The Edge Q2 DM1 is surely going to make an apearance at some point too?

Im not really happy about getting more modes. Its simply because it makes people play separately. QL had tons of modes and made ppl play separately. If QL had TDM and duel only then QL would have been totally populated in TDM instead of having people play only instagib, insta freeze, clan arena ctf and some TDM.

Not true. People would get use to only one mode, do the tournaments for only one mode, engage more, make more clans.. Possibly there could have been 4v4 eSport tournaments as bringing all people in one place could have been huge for Quake. In QC people are already use to play TDM and Deathmatch and for an example there are people who never played that modes before they were like only CA and instagib players. For now as there are limited modes they will stick to those kind of modes. We dont need to seperate people and do more modes. So hopefully we will not see more modes in QC.

I did not argue against 'one mode' per se. I was arguing that tdm as present in ql (30 weapon resp, beginners running around with machineguns) is fundamentally not attractive to casuals. Conversely, if you were to make it the only (apart from duel) playable mode, the game would have no playerbase.

I also specifically mentioned possibility of a casual-friendly-yet-competitive mode and expressed my doubts they will achieve that in qc.

With this in mind, I stand by my previous claim: vast majority of people playing games could not give fewer fucks about competitive gameplay. If you want a game with a healthy scene, you need casual-friendly modes at its core.

Everyone makes one big mistake when arguing that 30sec weapons respawns etc. kills the gamemode for casuals. Bullshit. As long as the playerbase is big enough and match making works noobs can play TDM with other noobs. Was TDM bad for us when we started with Q3? No. Because we were all bad. We fired rockets blindly, killed our teammates, laughed about it, but remembered to maybe not do that again. Our opponents did the same. There is no reason at all why this would not work today, unless you argue that pure arena shooter gamemodes are not appealing anymore. Different story.

Now, if QC can reach these numers in players, I don't know. The tech is still broken and there are a lot of strong contenders out there that make you shoot stuff.

So, all I am asking is to be able to set these settings in custom game. They might implement that. In a couple of months.

There are item timers over armors and mega. No problem with adding those to weapons. QL had that weekend of Fast TDM (15 second weapons unlike QC, short timelimit like QC) and it was fine.

Main issue with new players has never been not understanding how to fire a rocket or that sniper gun is to be used at long range (but that's what Tim Willits thinks, apparently). It has always been learning how to get the resources, of which a big part is learning WHERE the items are on the maps.

I hate to bring this up again, but before QL I used to play Nexuiz (now: Xonotic) and it had translucent weapons and armors showing where the items will spawn eventually, which I always thought was awesome. QC does a good job with armors and has color coding for weapons, so those timers with color icons would work for weapons just fine.

of course it will be newbies against other newbies, the point about 30 seconds being bad stands - they will be running around with machineguns too much.

note how the most popular mode in ql was ca, the one where you get all weapons to begin with and alll you have to do is shoot other people.

i cannot stress enough how much the general audience is uninterested in learning much about the game they play. Joe Random wants to play laid back games and cannot give a fuck about "practising to get better".

- top idea of "tactics" was camping

Because the thing is, it takes one lost game until someone decides to try something else. Then they try to find ways to win against other team - the game being team-based encourages "us vs them" thinking, people are wired to react to that :)

At work we have table football table and it took like 2 weeks for first tournament to be played and soon after we had clear skill tiers of people mostly playing within their bracket ;) There are the "pros" [guys who can shoot at an angle and pass the ball ;)] and others trying to emulate them.

Some of the players who tried in the first weeks stopped playing altogether, deciding it's not their sport.

And it doesn't have respawning items or anything like that, so that couldn't have been the reason :)

Dumbing down the game is the wrong approach. You can't have a middle ground too, were say, "public tdm" is easy due to 5sec weapon respawn and "ranked tdm" is 30sec. That way people will not be *able* (important: they dont HAVE to if they dont want to, but they could if they wanted!) to learn the true game and will get stomped once they decide to dip their toes into ranked.

I happen to have played quake with friends in high school so i got extra anecdotes for you

they were all pretty much inexperienced with fps and barely able to move forward and shoot at the same time.

Dude, I have been playing Quake from the very first game. Maybe my story is just different. To sum it all up, we played TDM, we didn't care about resources. We all had a weapon from time to time, because noone was good enough to time and control them yet. When we did not have a weapon, MG and gauntlet were fun enough.

That's it. And that would still work today, with or without champions, with or without 2 or 3 types or armor, with or without a dumbed down health system.

So there is no need to simplify the rules as long as the absolute basics of the game (pressing W and M1) is fun enough to attract people. And it is. Otherwise CoD would not be so successful.

You are making the assumption that people would have moved from Q3/Q4 CTF to QL TDM. I wouldn't have made the switch to QL if it didn't have CTF. Both the Q3 and Q4 CTF pickups still had activity when QL came out, so it wouldn't have been a problem to stay with that.

It is funny how some quakers think that few modes is what a game needs to be popular. The majority of the most played FPS games have multiple modes so that people can find one they like. If COD was only S&D it would have gotten nowhere near it's popularity. Same applies to games like CS, Battlefield etc. The only thing one mode gives you is a lower population of active players. More modes gives you natural selection where the most popular modes survive and the others die.

It's a shame that I have to explain this but let's start with just one obvious one:

First of all setting up to pick-up the objective in the middle of the map in the first few seconds of the match isn't part of CTF.

In CTF you have your base and your flag, and the enemy has their base and their flag.

In Sacrifice you have to also choose which station/base/obelisk you will capture to score, rather than simply bringing the flag you captured back to a base that's already been given to you; This means that you can plan for the best possible route, faint the direction you're going to score at, etc. You can also alternate meaning that if you get the first skull and scored it in A, the 2nd round if you manage again to get the skull you can decide as an example to go B instead as your opponent might expect you to score it in A again.

It's almost as if it has a bit of that extra mind game that CS:GO has as to which site the enemy will go and attack at, which makes for more complex mind reading.

Then there's that "domination" element to it, with having to score by guarding the zone rather than simply dropping something on it to score. But I'll let you digest the first part of my post first.

Have you played both CTF and Sacrifice?

I play sacrifice with some Quake3 CTF'ers and even they say there"s more to it now in QC Sacrifice in terms of complexity for strategy compared to CTF.

It doesn't make CTF any less fun or relevant though. I like both.
