The reverb is out of control lol wow. It's hard for me to even think about what's going on in the match or the gameplay because the sound is so overwhelming.

I got a little bit more used to the sound after several minutes, but still think it's way too overwhelming and chaotic - still made it difficult to focus.

Some ability gameplay elements looked interesting, like tossing the teleport ball during a fight as a means of distracting your opponent. Most of the abilities were used as "run away!" from what I could tell.

It takes time to get used to it while playing, but still when you are used to it its really hard to hear some sounds like armor pick up and so on

Quake champs is really good designed so far. I have witness Slovenian best Overwatch player that has never played Quake before doing great in Quake champs. After many hours of playing QC he was already top scorer, after few more hours of playing QC he was already called a cheater from a guy who play Quake more than 10 years. Hopefully QC and this kind of duel style will bring us new pro duel players. Watching same names over a decade is kind of boring.

Im talking about Quake Champs how the game is designed. Its more fair than QL was (q3) copy for new players. Game have big potencial now to get new players in the game. What new is there to learn in this game that wasn't seen in countless other games already. Changing the formula of Quake simply for the sake of change dumb.

Imagine if they changed Counter-Strike to have heroes and abilities and all this shit, I doubt many people would welcome that change.

It's time to face the facts that some games just don't gather as much crowd attention as others. Quake will never draw the numbers some other games do, that's a simple fact, weather it's pure Quake World style or a Champions style it does not matter at all.

What people are seeing now is id software bending to the popular market of MOBA FPS shooters. And they will likely not get any more players/spectators on board by doing that. Quake is Quake its appeal is limited and always was.


Aside of that we already had "fake Quakes" in the past, that would be Quake II and Quake IV and they didn't really huge draw numbers of players either.

Also if they want to push away from the old Quakes, maybe come up with new maps and stop re-using the same once great but now tired to death maps from the past Quakes. I know this is a highly unpopular opinion, but I'm tired of DM6, DM7, ZTNs and other bullshit, that will likely end up in the rotation 24/7 from the moment this game releases.

The game audio sounds like it's not coming directly from the game, like someone is filming the screen with a crappy camera. Unfortunately it is coming from the game.

Imagine dying to getting spawnkilled or spawning right infront of your opponent.. means a 33% penalty instead of just giving up 1 frag during a game. Also initial spawns are so much more important than in 10 minute classic duel.

I've even come to deal with the idea of champions. But I think this best of three, frag limit of three, forced champion selection duel mode is crap. Even the most simple approach to adding champions to duel would make it very different to classic duel. This round based stuff is another layer on top of that.

LOL is a boring game, in my opinion, and I do not have to tell you that there's a lot more audience than quake. His argument is no longer valid. QL came with the intention of releasing the old-school style of fps arena, to try to please the old public and attract the new ones. Had some hype at first, but died 2x faster than Q3 itself. It is obvious that something different needs to be done.

And I've said several times here, QC is still beta. We must then, as constructive criticism, that certain things do not seem to work well, and give innovative hints as well, because that is the goal. One negative criticism would be "damn it changes, we want classic quake". Have you ever thought how disheartening this sounds to anyone who is involved with the QC project?

QC is in beta. I got access today actually. It does have some annoyances, but I've enjoyed playing it. I still think this duel mode stinks though. I don't know what constructive criticism I could possibly give about that. Get rid of it? :D

I wanna see the sorts of great matches between the pros in QC that we have seen in previous Quake games. I don't think that is possible with this duel mode.

What ID software is trying to do, is put new things into a quite polished quake game (over the years). It's quite the same way, had FIFA tried to put elements of hand play (for every player in the field, for soccer), in order to bring a bigger crowd (from basketball) to football (soccer).

The id software is trying to create a different new quake, and if this is their goal, none of us have the right to make them change their minds.

They're welcome to do so. Just like with Rage. Is Rage a popular game today, that we play every day and speak of it ?

That is the point. If you're a studio, that made the first iteration of the game that was successful, you will want to feed off of that. But there's a hook here - you can do:

A - "New game, from the popular creators of DooM and Quake !"
or
B - "Quake: Champions - the same game everyone loves"

If you change too much in the game, it becomes A, and that is how you market it. If you go for B, and still change too much in it, so that it becomes almost a different type of game, you will get a whole crowd of haters.

Why haters ? Because there is a thing, about Books, Art and even Music. Computer games can be added to that - whenever a creator/compositor/whatever releases his creation to the public, it instantly becomes public property. Not in a factual way, no. But in an empirical sense, where people start associating their feelings, memories and what not with it.

And that is a thing to understand, for you as well.



However, there's a solution to it all. A compromise. Not to make the game one sided - make 2 games into one.
Classic Mode + whatever ID software has dreamed up in 2016-2017.

It is really easy to add classic mode to Quake Champions. And it's not easy at all, at the same time. Why ?

Because Quake is inter-linked, balance wise. "Doing" the balance, aka "Copy-pasting" quake3's or even quake1's weapon balance and movement balance is very easy, it doesn't really take a lot of development power. Same thing with Green Keel models, and toning down of effects and filtering (or adding a special pro-sound mod) sounds.

That is easy. What is not easy, is making quake3 balance work on Quake Champion's maps. You can be sure they will model the whole gameplay balance to what they think the game should be, and that is a problem for non-casual quakers.

You have to remember, that even Quake3 was heavily modified by OSP / CPMA, Quake Live incorporated those elements, because they were/are/became a supreme version of the game, balance wise.


So the only solution, IMHO, is making a Classic mode with classic maps from from both Quake Live and Quake3 (as an example), classic map structure, weapon and powerup spawns, architecture intact (perhaps only making some corners faster to strafe through, to promote speed), and disabling champion abilities.

At this current beta state, whilst the gameplay is interesting for the unexperienced, it's a clusterf*ck of various sounds, announcer, flashy things and pizza timers, invisible enemy due to footsteps not working and also blending into the textures of the map.

That is not a competitive game. It's a pub game.

Also, Quakes never were competitive games, but pub games. Go install vanilla Q1 and don't strafe jump: that's Quake for the Quake developers. Or go read Carmack's notes on how Q3's balance was introduced as a way to make the game be more accessible to new players and to avoid stomping; the total opposite than what you are saying. Or in Q2, Q3 and Q4 the default player models were many and all had little visibility, which is the same complaint QC is getting.

They are always trying to get a replacement for the Quake. See the number of empty servers around the world. Where did everyone go?

And QL also left the ESL esports competitions in 2012, and DH supported the game until 2013. Not even in twitch or youtube transitions, the game gets more than 5k viewers, this being some famous pro-player. Not even in majors, the numbers were no more than that.

Now look at CS 1.6, it has several servers around the world, and before CSGO arises it has been used in competitions around the world. And I do not even have to say anything about CSGO, do I?

I have a friend who has a friend who tried QC. And no, its not slow at all. Its just Sync and Z4 not picking fastest champs and not trying to move with max speed - mainly, they were fighting all the time or trying to get best positions by constant rjumping and then tried to hit a rail in a zoom-mode. The game itself is really fast if you play with Anarki and even faster if you fight the champs that have about the same speed.

That friend of mine didn't play much CPMA back in the days so Anarki was even too fast for him, he needed time to adjust.

Speaking about CPMA, he met Lunokhod ingame and asked him how he liked QC. The answer was "okay".

As somebody said already, this was just a showmatch. The Z4 approach was definetly not to win at all cost. He even lost second duel to Syncerror (not that sync plays awful, though).

-> repeat x N (3<N<6)

I've given it a thought. And watched the full versions of these gloryful battles. Here's me trying to be constructive, i guess.

The abilities sure look great in duel, i must admit. Especially, Ranger's and Nyx's.

What i dislike is that round system, killing all the pace and item-based game. You just couldnt rush at opponent anymore, knowing that you will rush him again just before the MH, kill him and reward yourself with a tasty big bubble (or QC big nazi luftwaffe-cross, whatever).

I would get rid of rounds completely.

And leave 10 champion for each of the players.

And i would smoother the process of choosing next champ, for example, you could scroll down the champs while ur still alive, choosing the one u'll respawn with. It will be really faster and not feel like an entracte at the theatre (which every good theatre got rid of).

That way you will have ur "champions meta" while not making the game SO MUCH slower and defensive. And the speed is something id is build the whole qc brand around.

Im totally down with the game so far. Even 1v1 looks cool and I can imagine myself watching it on stream. The only things that really dont work for me is the rocket launcher and those rocket jumps. And why would one railshot give 100 and another 80 damage. As an anarki player i find the tanks almost invincible as it is. Anyway so hyped!

Thank god im not the only one who actually likes the game so far. I didn't play duel yet but it gave me good impressions.

I'm just happy we have new quake game with the core gameplay of old ones. At first I really disliked that different champions have different movements but after getting used to it i think it's a good feature. Also there aren't that many champions so it's easy to learn all of them and their abilities. It took me only 1 day to be very familiar with what's going on and understand the game (I played previous versions though).

Basically all the things I didn't like at first, I've got used to quite fast and don't see much flaws that can't be fixed. For me main thing is that RL needs fixes. Really bad. It needs to be more flexible, faster, and smoother. Just doesn't feel as it should.

Briefly, duels in QC is round-based as the CA, but you can die 3x in each round now. And duels is always a bo3 roundlimit.

For this to really work, you need a meticulously refined spawn system. If QC use the same type of QL's spawns system(it was like furthest away) then it will not be suitable. The opponent can take advantage of this and hunt down the opponent with spawnrape, and this is bad for a round-based gametype.

So random spawns would be more appropriate, but you still run the risk of being born in front of your opponent and giving a easy spawnfrag(especially if your champion is of low stacks nature). So I think the respawn points should be quite limited and far enough from each other. I see no other solution to this, and in reality, in QC it does not make much sense to have so many respawn points in a duel like this is. Or do it like in the deathmatch of doom2, where players are born next to good weapons, lol.

What about choosing where to spawn?

I do not know if it would be functional. And players may want to always choose the best respawns, such as being born close to items that are about to be born, something like that.
So I do not know if it would be fair. But I thought that anyway this should be tested in beta phases of the game, just to see if it gets better.

How about a standard 10 minute duel from QL but on death you can choose a different champ. That keeps the game the same but also gives the loser a slight edge to choose the correct champ.

Don't Bring Guns to a Knife Fight! Why this game even named with prefix Quake. It could be just "Champions" , but then they couldn't steal maps from all Quake serial.

I like the new champions format for both casual and pro tournament use to bring in new younger people. I think it could still make for some interesting and intense games for the spectators. I'd still like to see some sort of classic duel ruleset though for the elderly, not that I think it's ever likely to happen. tbh I just want to see Scalebearer tox +forward bullrush.

Endless +back with 100dmg rail with champs that can disappear or heal themselves if they +back enough will surely be fun.

Time will tell, I'm willing to give it a chance and there's still time for some changes like weapon dmg and OP champ abilities after feedback from the closed beta. I expected a dramatic change to duel though because the old format doesn't appeal to many people.
