And here I thought I was to continue going all-in on Overwatch and never look back, as I've been doing for the first 4 seasons.

After the announcement of the QC Beta, and now watching this first real skilled pro QC gameplay footage, I can start to once again feel the urge and motivation go back to Quake.

Hopefully a lot of the old legends and former pros will feel the same way and give it a chance.

Why did they make the UI so flishy flashy lol, it's distracting as fuck when you don't need to look at it and useless when you actually need to know exactly how much damage you just took. Only the ammo counter appears to behave normally.

Dunno 'bout you guise but that's quite a gamebreaker for me if it can't be disabled... together with what I'm fearing is the inability to change gun x/y/z and keep it fixed drawgun2 style instead of floating about everywhere.

and high positioned weapon is also better for lg, cause with weapons positionned to close from bottom of the screen, it feels "unatural", "unrealistic", hard to explain and to pick up the right words to express what i mean properly

basically, if you take ql as example, try fov 90 and default drawgun 2/3, low fov + "higher" positionned weapons actually makes aiming more precise/"easier" than with high fov and lower weapons pos.

i wouldn't mind translucent weapons tho, cause atm the weapons are rather big and take a large part of the screen.

I think you are overthinking, it's a matter of personal preference and setup.
Fov 90 which was intended for 4:3 screens in 1999 with 15-17-19'' displays is not even close to today's standards of 24'' or higher displays with fullHD or UHD resolutions.

I remember 2001 15''display with fov 90, weapon was still taking too much of the screen and for that display I had fov 115 or 120 with drawgun 0.
In late 2005 I purchesd 16:9 fullHD 24'' display, my fov went down to 113
And in 2012 I baught new 27' 144hz fullHD display, and since then my fov never went below 107.5
DrawGun 0 for all weapons except lg, gauntlet, and plasma because when you see the weapon you are a bit more precise due to that more "realistic feeling". But even those are tweaked with x/y/z position to take as less space as possible. I can't even imagine having 90fov with such a big display....it's just no frigging way...

As for QuakeChampions I just love the options of weapons skins.
I remember the early days of quake 3 when you could import tens of new models and skins for characters and weapons. Once in the lan we played as all the characters from cartoon netwerk, imagine johnny bravo screaming don't hurt my hair man when being close to death or homer simpsons saying why you little and such..... and having q2 gun models and so-on....that aside.....

It's an easy asset to implement, and like I said depends on the preference, if they are trying to unite q1-2-3-4 players with different style movement x/y/z is also smart move since for example q1-qw had weapon in the center

I meant just because some like center, some are right some left handed, and when you go with bigger fov if not done correctly the gun goes too much forward making it look huge and disformed... that's why x/y/z is a good thing ;)

Yes I actually used to play most of my years @ quake with drawgun 0.

But since 2 or 3 months now I learned to play with guns shown, and I like it so far! :D Especially in Reflex with the custom melee weapon and hopefully soon the golden ion cannon (= LG), will look amazing :D.

also quake champions will have custom weapons skins/models etc, so I guess it's better to show the guns in these kind of games. In QL I use drawgun 3.

It doesn't have to be VQ3 OSP, I prefer QL over Q3 anyway... it just needs to feel like Quake. This is the only video I've seen from PAX with someone who understands the movement so it's hard to tell.

I believe Anarky has special movement (air control) and that other heroes might have more limited movement ability. Possibly even speed caps. Not really sure.

So they included all movement variations. Only thing missing is Q2 character with ramp jumps but it can still be added.

Man there were some pros talking to balance reflex gameplay etc. I am not sure if its actually done, But they want here works with 8 diff movements and abilities? Seems impossible make this work for me om afps. Just impossible it turns to some big ass shit probably. Ye they got thump4 and maybe zero4 but it will never balanced and smooth. Though i wish they make something really crazy good... :D But i am woried this will be kinda more "skilled" version of doom MP.

Will probably move towards a dota 2-like meta rotation, which, after playing dota primarily for the past couple of years, is actually pretty cool. And things do eventually become more balanced over time.

If one champion has an advantage, nothing is to stop everyone using that champion. Then from usage stats you nerf/improve champions. Players change their play styles, try new things, keeps things fresh.

Still not sure about the abilities, but I think the different Armour/health and movement will be pretty cool.

A lot of you guys began to complain with QL that Sync and Sponge are not doing anything to improve the game and some even went to extent to say that adding little stuff will make it more alive (that's ridiculous)

There are countless debates why the game has been dead for years but let's be real and more skeptical about our favorite game, the reason why Quake has been dead for so many years is because the game itself is not for new players. Sure, at the very beginning of the franchise it was quite easy to get into it because everyone started at the same level of experience whereas right now, a lot of people that are playing the game have been playing it for years giving almost zero chance for the community to expand because once again, quake is not simple and people don't have the time to master it.

I really hope that this Quake will succeed and gain a lot more following than it currently has because after watching the gameplay, it made me feel really nostalgic and gave me high hopes of the developers finally figuring out what directions they need to go. I am also happy that not only QC will be "noob" friendly but the game core is going to be fairly the same.

I have personally played Q3 since 2005 so I am allowing myself to say that seeing the game not evolve at all in any direction is what made it dead.

To all the people that dislike Quake Champions, give it a go when it comes out and if you don't like it then you can shit talk on it and go back to playing Quake Live, nothing is stopping you from doing that.

I'm not convinced Quake is all that unfriendly or off putting to new players. It's just that there are no new players.

Getting started with Quake is arguably much easier than most games, you just join a FFA and mash away until you improve.

If matchmaking works as it is supposed to, noobs will be protected.

With functional matchmaking, the issue is not protecting noobs, and therefore, there will be no need to make classical AFPS skills obsolete or reduce their effectiveness in QC (it doesn't even look like they are coming close to doing that anyway).

Even with functional matchmaking you have people intentionally starting new accounts or losing a lot in order to destroy noobs. I hope it won't be too bad since QC will have a F2P model.

I'm hoping the skill rating system will quickly raise the skill rating of players who are destroying noobs. It can't be that hard. Just looking at the accuracies for hitscan weapons and average player speed should give it away.

To remove the advantage these players have over new players, the game would have to be dumbed down to such a great degree that it would be unviable as an e-sports title, or turned into an RPG. So why dumb it down at all?

Justification for dumbing down is not about protecting noobs; it is about making the game more attractive for the majority market. I'm hoping that won't be necessary and that all the modern gimmicks they are adding will be enough to keep players interested.

Rating systems typically don't do that sort of thing so I would be surprised if QC's did.

It doesn't have to be the only metric the rating system uses, but it could be used to increase the rating quicker than it otherwise would be. I think once id manages to actually put the newbs into their own server, a much harder question starts to arise. Can the game be fun at that level? Is it fun having to walk everywhere, to not know any of the weapons or the maps or having to switch with mousewheel (I bet default weapon binds will be 123456789)?

Yep. Changes to the game have nothing to do with skill levels if you have matchmaking that works.

I don't actually think the game is hard when you're playing with others on the same level as you. The only question is whether this formula appeals to modern tastes in an environment saturated with gaming options, where if something is the least bit tricky or requires more investment than they are willing to make, they can just go to another game.

In '93 and '94 when doom1 and doom2 came out, deathmatch was the most fun shit imaginable (and we knew nothing about it), so I find it hard to see how anyone couldn't love it if it were their first gaming experience, but alas, people are spoilt now; they've seen too much. So it's a good bet their tastes are quite different now. People have gone from being mindblown by doom to being highly skeptical about everything.

So as for when the fun starts, if you've just come out of a cave you've been living in for the past 30 years, there will be fun from the very beginning; but if you've been playing lots of the popular games over that time, and this is your first attempt at deathmatch, you will likely find it boring until you've figured out how to perform well.

I think I have seen binds 1, 2, 3, etc for weapons on the settings screen in some of the PAX videos posted. I'm guessing those are the defaults. Scrollwheel probably does the trick as well. I'm not sure what other defaults would be better.

His point is not about the game driving people away because of being too hard. It's about if the game offers something to players that have played the game for a couple of days and after that just don't know about the existence of strafe jumping and of other hidden intricacies that make Quake be fun on the long run.

Gameplay-wise that's likely the biggest issue Quake has always had. Games should be fun at all skill levels: Not only at the very beginning and only at the very end (Quake), and also not only at the beginning and only in the middle because of total lack of complexity at the end (Doom 4).

If you think about it people these days tend to drop games quickly because they want new experiences as fast as possible, since that's fun. In a given game if there's no good progression of new things to do/learn, usually due to lack of content, then that by itself will make people move on to other games/experiences. Therefore, games being harder or easier doesn't have anything to do with that lack of steady progression of things to do.

For example:
- In MOBAs that continuity of always being fun and of having new things to do is preserved by the amount of characters. The sheer amount of content (new characters to try out) makes it fun for noobs, and ensures intuitive progression in learning how to play as well. Same happens in Rainbow Six Siege.
On that note, nowadays games justify their price based on content alone, rather than the actual gameplay. SF5 was heavily criticized for its price tag given the relatively low amount of characters, despite the gameplay being so complex it easily can be the only and last game you could play. Inherent to that is the assumption of content = gameplay time (where it is still fun).
- In contrast, in Quake there's only the very most basic gameplay out there (keeping in mind noobs don't know about strafe jumping, timing and so on), there's only one character, no abilities, similar mods and map structure. There's very few things to do other than moving forwards and clicking to shoot, making it way too simple and quite a bad deal. Of course people move on to the trendy new experience.

The even harder question to answer is why did we keep on playing then. I think it's because:
1.- When we started we perceived Quake's content to be much larger than what it is considered to be today. The experience of playing with somebody else over the internet was novel content itself, and simple things like new maps (with the simplest of layouts) seemed like a huge deal.
2.- We got to see way better players -since there was no matchmaking back then preventing them from joining our servers- and thought it was fun to improve to get to that level. Then we learned about tournaments and so on, which themselves are fun. That process is pretty much forced in current games, by introducing in-game rankings.

I don't claim that the difficulty of quake drives new players away. I have said the opposite.

Once upon a time, quake was fun at the beginning, middle, and end (at least for a lot of people).

The reason that has changed is that people now have had a different experience with gaming than what the player of 1999 had.
Also, the beginning has been unbearable for most new players in all the quakes due to the lack of matchmaking.
Put matchmaking in, and we have to deal with the problems that remain.

As for MOBAs, I tried LoL for a while. I had incentive to like it (friends playing it). But I did not enjoy the beginning and so never made it to the middle, let alone the end.
Actually, the thing I liked about it most was the menu art. :D
MOBAs are not some universally liked thing despite their popularity. If they were, 100% of PC gamers would be playing them, which is far from the case.

MOBAs appeal to people who prefer to dabble in a thousand things rather than master a few things. (Not necessarily bad)
There is the appeal of the various addictive non-gameplay elements (which seem to be a requirement for a game to be popular nowadays).
Creating a game without these things is like creating music without an image, scene, cult of personality, etc.
Imagine how many people would listen to beyonce if the only possible exposure to her was an mp3 on the internet to download.
Music alone is not enough for huge popularity, and the same goes for gameplay.
A large part of MOBAs is also knowledge accumulation, and the good thing about that for the devs is there is no real limit to how much of that they can continually add to the game.
The perpetual lack of real balance means never-ending balance patches, which for a lot of people keep the game interesting.

I think awareness of the existence of the small number of commonly used skills in quake is not hard to provide to new players. You'd think a decent tutorial system would be more than enough.
If people can spend hours reading the laborious hero guides for MOBAs on the internet and memorizing things like build orders, I doubt they lack the attention span needed to watch a video about strafe jumping.
