i think there is something else to it because reference was never more expensive, and it was generaly seen as a downgrade for most review websites (they are all bought by compagnies) nevertheless i always bougth reference cards because they are the most reliable, you never have memory runing too hot with ref cards, which is not the case with custom cooler from brands.

you can always get a non-reference card without overclocking by default and reasonable cooling. also any brand that you trust.

Once you overclock it and increase the power limit it will suck power like there was no tomorrow and efficiency will go through the drain... It was the same with Maxwell... Reviewers praising Maxwell's power efficiency and then using massively overclocked cards to get the bench scores, that shit made me sick.

I have a GTX980 and it's OC-ed to 1460Mhz since 2014 dec. It's a G1 and I modded the bios to remove the power limit, so it can go higher, but then it's too loud, so I prefer not to push it that much.

When it was new (1.5 years ago), it used +32W because of the OC, and now it's still only uses 36W more, so yes Maxwell is indeed quite power efficient.

That's very true, though power efficiency remains good if you do a reasonable OC (for example the 980 ti EVGA SC+ at around 1300mhz has still very good efficiency).
But ye, those overclocking at 1450-1500+ are sucking like 300w+ which is terrible. I'm pretty sure the 1080 running at 2.1k mhz that nvidia was showing was sucking a whole lot more than 180w as well :)

It's just as expected to be honest. 1080 now is a good upgrade for 980 users but not for 980ti users. On the other hand the 1080ti or the Titan version that will show up later this year will be.

it was the same story before: 980 barely faster than 780ti but then Titan X much faster than both for 1k+ € and then an equivalent 980ti for 700€ a few months later.

Nvidia isn't really facing any competition so they have no reason to rush out with the big Pascal.

nVidia and ID is pushing for an upgraded version of nVidia drivers where the Vulkan API will be tweaked for Doom. Available soon after Doom release according to ID/nVidia.

So I'll just update my drivers and should see a performance increase? I'm not expecting miracles (its only a 750ti after all) but I've seen Vulkan mentioned alot recently

Vulcan is a low level API, it can help a lot with optimization, but it also requires a lot of extra work from the engineers. Vulcan support doesn't automatically mean that the game will perform better, but it can. It's a new API vs something old, which is well known by the developers and the driver makers.

Idtech is a bit tricky, because it’s quite demanding to deliver its lowest quality, but Vulcan offers a lot when it comes to memory management, so it might help with mega-texturing and streaming. I think If done well, there is a possibility you will get 5-10fps average speed increase on the 750ti.

Do you know how to get ride of textures poping /loading too slow in RAGE ? i have i5 6600k at 4.6GHz and GTX 680 and wanted to try RAGE again and its still a mess it seems, textures are ugly and poping out when you turn the view fast :S

First of all, looks like Doom is very resolution dependent, so try to lower that first. Pop ups happen when the game is on a hard drive and the assets can't be streamed fast enough, or when the CPU/GPU is struggling (your CPU is more than fine). When you load a level, wait a little until the disk activity settles.
I did not mess with the console cvars in the final version yet (I did it a lot in previous idtech games, and also in the beta too, but that was a “different” engine as Tiago said), so I rather not give advice based on guessing.

I think new drivers and/or game patches will increase the performance of the game on the Kepler and earlier card, because now it's terrible, (the GTX 960 beating the 780, and also the AMD R9-390 can’t be right).

Then try different vt_maxPPF values (+set vt_maxPPF 16). Value must be the power of two and the higher the number the more demanding it will be.
Rage also had a texture cache file, it's a good idea to store it on an SSD if you have one.

Ye i think i solved that i use PPF 8. higher is only if you have more than 4 cores CPU or HT. But for cache texture i was wondering, i have 16GO of RAM on the system and 2 GO of VRAM on the GPU i should not need any texture caching on the HDD/SSD no? It could even be better not to cache textures?

idtech5-6 games have megatextures as large as many Gigabytes, so it doesn't matter if you have 8, 16 or 32 GB or RAM. The cache contains the recently used textures (from the megatexture) in your area, so yes it's a good idea to have the cache file on the SSD if you have one (don't know if DOOM also has one or they dropped it, but Rage had one in the suer folder by default and it was possible to make one in the Wolfenstein games )

It runs really well on the Maxwell cards, you should be fine.

I got 200fps in doom4 using a gtx 750ti 2GB card but I had to turn everything to the lowest possible settings, lowest possible res the game allows ( I think it's 1280 x 720 ) and then set the resolution scale to 60%, turn sharpness to 4 and film grain to 0.

Looks like a bag of shit though and things get pixelated at long distances, hard to use the vortex rifle.

i have a 144hz monitor so if i can't get at least 150fps in a mp FPS there's no way i'll even try it. For single player i don't care that much but if i play a fps it's mainly for mp, except for rare cases.

I'm asking because from what i've seen about the new DOOM, things don't look as bad as i thought, so i might buy and try it.

But i want to get sure the game has a future before buying it. I already bought overwatch because i can get 210+fps almost stable (from 170 to 260fps) at lowest settings 1080p and i'm 95% sure the game will be successful because it's blizzard and it has moba elements in it. And tbh when i tried the open beta it was quite fun actually, at least much more fun than watching streams of "pros" playing it.

I wouldn't get Doom for it's multiplayer. Your PC will be fine for Doom as mine is basically the same setup and I get a solid 90 fps.

Yeah on Ultra, its fine. I don't notice any frame drops and I haven't done any tweaking because I'm not overly concerned about getting 200 fps.

With a gtx 970 you won't need to turn many settings down to sit between 150fps - 200fps I think. If I can hit 200fps on a 750ti that only draws 40 watts of power then a 970 should be able to do it on decent visual settings.

Overwatch isn't going to provide the level of mastery and skill ceiling that you are used to with Quake. You will be limited by how far your skill and mastery can impact the game, like any moba. IMO quake players have their rose coloured glases on when looking at Overwatch because they deperately want a new popular FPS they can sink their time into and master, but there is only so far you can go in modern FPS, and overwatch even more so because it's a hybrid. The most quake players will get out of overwatch is 'fun for a while' but the mechnical side of it will just get dull after a while. The skill ceiling will come down and smash in the top of your head pretty quickly.

Doom4 is in a weird spot when you're talking about modern FPS. After about 12 hours game time in MP I've found that the game is subtly hinting that it can be good competitively, there is the ability for increased run speed and strafe jumping but whether or not the game matures enough for the 'elite' settings to take shape is another question. It probably won't.

Doom4 right now is basically an aim fest, you can sometimes out-dodge someone but the mechnics of dodging are severely limited when compared to quake, your only option is basically long strafe dodging and trying to play mind games with the long strafe directions you're going to take, and you can forget trying to jump in different directions, you're basically a floating free kill as soon as you jump. Doom4 is basically slightly more arena-FPS skill based than COD, but still very noob friendly.

If you were to mimick Doom4 MP in QL right now, a TDM game with these modifications to the server would do it:

- Teamsize 6v6, fairly large map
- Max 2 weapon loadout, any combination of weapons
- No weapon pickups, only health and ammo
- Max 100 health and armour
- One BFG that spawns with limited ammo every 2 minutes. It also has an alt fire that lets you see through walls.
- One upgraded railgun that is instagib, bigger hitbox on enemy model so it's near impossible to miss and limited to 4 shots on use, respawns every 2 minutes. It also has an alt fire that lets you see through walls.
- One Regen/Haste/Quad, 2 min respawn
- One custom powerup item that gives you 300 health, triple-rocket projectile launcher that is instagib, increased movement speed, decreased gravity when jumping. Lasts 30 seconds and respawns every 2 minutes. (similar variants and overpowered mechnics as well to cover the other 'demons')
- Run speed to about 0.7x regular run speed
- Remove strafe jumping and speed build up, add a second double jump ability
- Headshots do more damage for all weapons, railgun can instant kill with headshot
- Direct rockets do 60 damage instead of 100, splash damage similarly reduced
- Knockback of any kind is universally disabled
- Pick one of 4 runes on spawn that give you benefits such as seeing enemies through walls, seeing your last killer through walls, seeing all enemies through walls for 3 seconds after spawning, giving you armour when you spawn, timing items and powerups, etc etc etc
- A universal bind that quickly switches to gauntlet, does a shittonne of damage and can one-hit kill someone in melee range when they are on moderate health, then switch back to main weapon.

Theres a bunch of other small additions but that is the bulk of it.

but still when i tried the open beta of ow i liked it, not every aspect of the game but i had quite a lot of fun playing it, so even if it's not quake why not giving it a try ? especially considering the fact that it will be an instant popular game

about the skill ceiling yeah, like i said it's not quake but imho the aim/dodge aspect of the game is still there, because ground accel is high and a lot of heroes got hitscans weapons. And/or projectile weapons like rl or plasma

i bought it anyway so now i'm forced to play it for as long as i can :), and i will see if this game is meant for me but only after probably at least 1 month of trying it hard :)

and tbh, there's 1 hero i really like, as you probably already know, and he's called soldier:76, the way you aim and move with this hero is basically the same than ql with hmg. And hmg/mg/lg are the same kind of weapons, my fav weapons by far. Then only thing i have to master is playing more as a team, learn the strategical aspects of the game (moba), and ofc aim/dodge with only 1 weapon (which is fine, because like i said as long as it has a mg/lg kind of weapon it's good for me :))

it's too early for me to say if ow is worth it or not, like i said i need at least 1 month to understand the game at 100% and see if it's very bad or bad or decent or good or very good (in term of fun, more than in term of true skill)

I get ~110fps on medium and ~130fps on low with render scale 100% gtx 970 + i7 4790k @ 4.4ghz all cores. Overwatch has more of a future imo, I think Doom is really just an SP game, it doesn't support proper modding,only snapmap. I bought it for the SP and to test my pc :L)

yes latest drivers and my ram is 16gb 2133mhz 11-13-13-30 so decent speed. its all because of render scale.

render scale makes the biggest difference to fps, it renders things at lower resolution but stretched that's why he got 200 fps on 60% render scale from 1280*720 (which would actually work out at smthg like 900*400 with 60% downscale?..) so it will look blurry and shit :) - Personally I have to play on 100% render for it to look decent and be playable. I guess I could try from 1920*1080 with 75% downscale though and it will look a little bit worse but probably give me >150fps - I didn't get chance to try stuff yesterday but I'll test what FPS I can get on different settings tonight

edit: yeah so, i can reduce render scale to just 85% and I'm getting like 140-200fps :)

Yup it looks horrid when I play, but it allows me to play smooth on high FPS. The game plays like absolute shit anything below around 80-100fps IMO, maybe it's because I have a 144hz screen I dunno.

I've been so used to QL on solid 250fps and 144hz that anything else just isn't as smooth and it really stands out to me.

Who needs all that detailed shit in MP anyway? You're too busy concentrating on aiming to spend time looking at the pretty textures and lighting, and intense textures are too visually complex in combat and just distract you and interfere with crosshair visibility, even on 144hz.

SP is a whole different story though, I'm not going to touch SP until I get a gtx 1070 or 1080.

Yeah, something that annoys me is that people think 60fps is fine. We should be aiming for 120/150 minimum imo, because we have 144hz monitors available and the higher FPS we have, the lower input lag you have, and monitors are capable of drawing all those frames.

We're playing FPS games, these need low input lag and as smooth an experience as possible while looking around the 3d world, especially at fast pace and with a competitive environment. All these reviews of GPUs saying oh it does 60fps @1080p and think that's good! Who cares!? We need 150+FPS! High FPS > More Pixels :)
