It was part of a mono studio headset I bought from a local music shop. It's one of those types that don't pick up any background noise.

Yeah if you don't have a really beefy amp you should definitely go for a heaphone amp. I mainly like the extigy because it is a decent amp that works independant from my PC (quite under-rated and overlooked, also cheap to buy on ebay) By letting that do the Digi-to-Analogue conversion and sending it out to my Pioneer SA-8500 1967 vintage amplifier, I also get the decent power and warmth that enhances the sound.
