What we have discussed so far is that we will practise internally and see who does best. But honestly it might also matter who is the opponent aswell.

About the Qcon exp movie:

It's coming in a matter of days. I've been pressing the matter with the concerned movie maker and it really is coming very soon. It could be out by the middle of next week for all I know.

The fact is the guy assembling our after movie does it for free and he has to do his job tasks first which is understandable I think.

Anyways I've asked an ETA and I've been told that this weekend might see the end of it. Again no promises or fixed date but what I can say is it's not gonna be another month of waiting.

Also I want to add that my trip last year had been paid kindly by Memento_Mori and this time around I was going to QuakeCon no matter what, as I've clearly indicated a few times.

That beeing said, I can't wait to go to QuakeCon with The Averagers <3

Why don't you guys just stream like fazz does leading up to qcon? It's fine to ask for donations but you should atleast give something back to the people that donate for you to go other than promises that may or may not happen for whatever reason (e.g. the exp video). Would imagine that people are going to be way less likely to take these promises seriously after last year.

I would if i could but streaming with 1Mbit upload doesn't work that well, no idea about spartie/dem0n. Fazz will probably stream a lot of our practice games anyway.

I don't really think we are promising something unrealistic with some daily phone recorded videos to share our experience so i think that should be manageable. :)

I actually donated a small amount last year to one of the players looking to go AND to exp as a whole, will donate again this year just for the chance of not playing the same 3-4 Americans in the finals as I have the past 3 years. I've also donated on fazz's stream but I guess it's just that jealousy though.

According to these information you weren't even in the top 3 teams in 2012.

Also, in 2013 and 2014 you played against 7 (not 3-4) different American players in the finals, i.e. your two opposing teams didn't overlap at all.

(It's also worth mentioning that your team placed 4th in 2011, behind 3 European teams. But that's why you excluded 2011 in the first place. ;))

Especially if this is the only euro team that comes (assuming each of the 2 American teams going don't somehow manage to get 1st and 4th seed at qcon via some online tournament leading up to the event and thus have to face each other beforehand at the tournament)

I don't think there is a "final" for either CTF or TDM (only for duel in the "Grand Master Duel Finals Stage")

From my understanding of this tournament's format, seeding will only directly affect first round opponents anyway. It is actually more likely for higher ranked teams to face off in rounds 2 or 3.

Even if the two point leaders face off in the final 4th round due to one of the teams losing earlier on, the loser of that match will likely fall to 3rd or below overall (for that particular game type).

It is also possible for the top 2 teams of a given game type to never face off during the tournament.

It is worth noting that it hasn't been fleshed out yet what kind of Swiss tournament system they will implement. In the official tournament rules, there is only a copy & paste of the first few paragraphs of the wikipedia page on Swiss-system tournaments.

However, cl0ck apparently thinks it will be some elimination-based system, so he obviously didn't read the rules carefully.

He also misunderstood the rules of the Grand Master Duel Finals in this post of his.

So I guess his job is having very strong opinions on how a tournament will work out, even though he doesn't understand any of the tournament's rules.

Let me check. The past 8 Quake team tournaments at Quakecon with European teams were:

2014 CTF, 2013 CA, 2011 TDM, 2010 CTF, 2009 CTF, 2006 TDM 2v2, 2004 CTF

There weren't any European teams participating in 2012 and 2008, and there were no Quake team tournaments in 2005 and 2007.

Out of these 8 tournaments, European teams won 3:
2004 CTF, 2006 TDM 2v2, and 2011 TDM.

So, 3 out of 8, not 1 out of 8.

Just to make it clear. You just mocked the European scene for not winning in 2012 and 2008 even though they didn't even send a team for either of those tournaments. That's a rather lame way to try to prove a point.

You are right in some respect. It is indeed noteworthy that the last time a European team has won a CTF Quakecon tournament has been in 2004. However, they only tried three times since then; in 2009, 2010, and 2014.

Then again, please remind me: When was the last time a NA team has won a big TDM tournament on LAN? That was probably before 2004.

Here is what I would suggest in order to boost your donations:

Rather than simply promise to upload demos and videos of your journey in return for donations (which you would and should do regardless of donations), why not offer to donate part of your earnings to the community (HOQ, etc) if you were to win in return for the support received?

Your own donations could then be used to support and promote the very community which supports you and which would have contributed to sending you to the tournament in the first place ?

Just my 2 cents on the matter.... But that is by definition how a community works.

They're 3rd seeds behind whatever the top 2 US teams will be & will finish 3rd behind them both (losing 1v1 & CTF)

In Quake's state 'doing well' is achieving first place, since even the second and third place prizes are not enough to pay for the traveling costs.

This team will most likely not 'do well' in Quake, because other teams beat them in two out of the three competitions of the marathon. Also none of them will play at the stage.

They will have fun in their free overseas vacations and be able to compete in their hobby at the highest level, but when it comes to Quake results they won't 'do well'.

edit: Come to think about it, with Syncerror's flawed tournament rules they will indeed win money off TDM, no matter that they fail to win the actual tournament. Since they won't pay for trip and don't need to be the best to earn money then this turned out to be a great deal for them, lol.

Considering the other 2 teams that are most likely attending from Europe not even a TDM win is sure for us. But we'll practice for TDM and CTF so we can do well in everything and potentially have a shot at the "overall win" as well.

That's the problem: Even assuming your victory in the TDM part of the marathon, still the 'muricans are going to get first and second place in both CTF and duel, so overall victory is impossible.

That unless there's like four euro teams attending (so the 'muricans receive no points in TDM), you manage to reach top 4 in CTF and spartie goes all drunken master in duel.

I'm curious how many good NA CTF teams will participate. I assume that two teams (one of them based around rapha/id_/clock, and one based around dahang/br1ck/zero4) are very likely.

But besides them, who has an incentive to compete?

Think about a team that's the third best in NA, like Loaded in 2010 (Flysher, kgb, whaz, sparks) or SAKE in 2014 (sparks, Avenged, kgb, Effortless). While these would probably be the favorites against The Averagers because they are actual CTF teams, they still have a practically 0% chance of winning in CTF, and a definite 0% chance of winning in TDM and duel.

So, they are very unlikely to make any money. I wonder if they will even bother to come to Quakecon. If teams like these don't show up, The Averagers are the 3rd best team in CTF.

I still strongly believe we can do well in ctf above any expectation with a good pragmatic understanding of how our various playstyles can work together. And I don't think I've ever played in a team with so much competition mindset. It will be a very interesting adventure and I wonder how well we can do in CTF.

Actually because of the weird tournament structure I also take back my "3rd only".

CTF is still a no-go but, assuming rapha-dahang are on the same team then I think dem0n/spart1e would have a decent chance vs z4 (only other good dueller) so potentially:

TDM: 1st ($4000?)
CTF: 3rd ($1000?)
1v1: 2nd ($2500?)
1v1: 2nd ($2500? - or is this all or nothing?)

So you're saying spart1e is better at TDM than fazz? I have seen some stand-out performances by spart1e, but also lots of average ones (for his skill level). It's a close call.

In either case, all four of them have lots of TDM experience and probably very good team chemistry, so it doesn't really matter.

Maybe noctis can show dem0n those last few TDM tricks that he doesn't know yet, and dem0n teaches both noctis and fazz how to play CTF. Then they only need practice partners to solidify their play... ;)

Those rankings have to be interpreted carefully. Let's look at the fact that you and Spart1e rank way above fazz for DreamHack summer.

You and spart1e played 7 maps, fazz played 14 maps.

Your best opponents were metsu and dignitas.
His best opponents were the Russians, serious, and colwn.

Let's see how your best opponents did against his:

Dignitas lost 0:2 against both serious and colwn.
Metsu lost 1:2 against serious.

I think we can agree that comparing stats like NetDamage is not a meaningful thing to do when one considers these differences. But the beauty about it is: We don't really know how each of you will play on a team together and who will bring the best performances, and I hope we will see it at QCon.

Also note that noctis' teammates in Reason rank 15 (deus), 17 (zyv) and 25 (fazz). If those were meaningful rankings, how the hell did Reason manage to get 2nd place? As a counter example, the rankings of metsu's players are 2, 13, 16, and 20, which is quite a bit better than Reason. But metsu got eliminated in the quarter finals. It doesn't add up and that's because the system is clearly biased in some ways.

I agree, but there are many other factors you didnt take into account. The amount of losses and wins also matter on the average rating. Also the first tdm tournament, you can not exactly say we had a deathbringer squad with kekkie, madix, spartie and I.

And besides all that, much like ctf, you can not really translate those stats into reality, as some players have to hold different tasks. For example, most tdm teams have a defined pu runner who's going to stack up whole game and get the items so they can hold a couple areas and rape the fools who try to rush in with mg's, not to mention the few spawnkills that might happen aswell.

For example, it is much more forgiving rating wise to be holding the shaft room on dm20 than it is trying to rush the RA whole game with machineguns and little health. Those guys hardly ever get to see a quad aswell, they often just die trying to win the pu area to buy enough time for their carries to come into the mix.

So yeah :)

Edit: also higher seeded teams will play vs lower seeded ones at the beginning, boosting up their stats and rating by a much larger margin for a few consecutive games. And I want to note that I've already specified to my averagers fellas that I will not run pus unless circumstances force it, because I'm an aweful pu runner in tdm, I feel much better with no health and little ammunition because then I have nothing to lose, contrary to my enemies :p

I didn't say that you or spart1e are bad TDM players because that would be an absurd thing to say. I just said that I don't think you are far above fazz (if at all), and that you are probably below the noctis/krysa kind of level.

But he used to play the cess role incredibly successful too, didn't he? At least in 2v2 with zyv, I think zyv was mostly holding areas and noctis' job was more cess. So he excels at both kinds of extremes. I always thought that's one of the reasons why many consider noctis to be such a great TDM player, right?

Noctis is easily one of the best tdm players of whole time in my opinion, and I say that for the reason you've given. Tdm is about many things but the core aspect of it is to be able to outdamage your opponents consistently. That means an incredibly high level of fighting abilities. If you can combine this with a very wide understanding of how to play yourself around on any given map, you're going to be a supersize alien spacecraft hovering above minion humans cowing about on the ground waiting for the deathbeam to annihilate all life signs :).

I'm not saying I'm noctis' or krysa's level, I just think people tend to underestimate my tdm abilities by overlooking some of these factors listed above. I'm not an effective pu runner but my acknowledged relatively 'high' ctf skills aren't just there because I know how to strafe or move better than most.

That beeing said, noctis destroys me on any given position he might choose to take, but I'll take comfort in knowing that is the case for most of us human beeings :D.

And I think you are right, I and probably many more do underestimate your TDM skills. That's probably due to a combination of you not taking those flashy PU roles and you never playing in a tournament-winning elite TDM team (as far as I remember).

Think of tox as a counter-example. Although he never made the flashy PU runs either -- that was always fox's and l1nkin's job -- people don't underestimate him because he's exclusively played in top teams.

So, as I said before: I'm glad to see you in Team Averagers because you'll finally have a real TDM spotlight on you and I will be cheering for you to play your best and win at QCon.

I'm perfectly fine with beeing systematically pointed at when it comes to the exp movie eventough we were 4 asking for the donations and I didnt exactly need any myself since I was already beeing supported by Meme.

But this is too short a shortcut in my opinion.

The promised footage is on its way and right now it is not in the hands of any of the guys who benefited from the kind donations last year.

Besides, some of the footage included will hopefuly be worth the wait you guys are right to complain about.

I also find it odd that most of the people who complain about it are mostly the ones who have not contributed to anything in the first place.

Do not forget that I am also often very prone to donate myself to various causes here and there and I don't just take stuff and get away with it like a thief. Ask 2gd, fazz, faceit, qlranks or zlive who all may or may not confirm this.

Like I said in my above comment: offer to donate back to the community part of your earnings if you win and you may receive more donations.

Support back the community that supports you in the first place.

As far as I am concerned that is how I would function and what would motivate me to donate.

They owe us nothing, a donation is a donation. I pay to see them play and have a great event.

Having them made a promise to give some of the earnings only raises the pressure to win.

However if they win something and decide to donate a little something to 125 fps i would be pleased and definitely would donate another time.

It is no way an obligation nor a method of pressure.

I am just saying that our community needs donations to survive. You know to what extent quake live is suffering lately due to lack of motivation in the absence of decent leagues and money.

I only find it normal that we all support each other and that includes receiving support from those we ourselves support.

But by all means, don't misinterpret what I am saying. As far as I am concerned I will donate regardless of what they decide to do with the money they win (if they win...).

PS: I heard rapha is teaming up with clock and zero4. Not sure who their 4th Is but it may be sparks (just a feeling... ).

This tournament format really suits this team imho. They stand a chance for the final win as well, so this would be a profitable trip for them anyway, and donations not necessarily needed, but what made them to play and be good in every mode of quake, is their passion and love for the game. Since these players weren't only showed up few weeks before big tournaments, neither only participated when money were included, and kept the game on a competitive level for long, I will donate myself a few bucks, and inspire others to do so in memory of Quake's better days.

okay so a kinda funny story: i donated a somewhat generous amount then noctis says that someone made a particularly big donation, so the first thing that pops into my head is that i accidentally added another 0 to my amount. so i decide to message fazz on esr to clarify, but he doesnt answer within seconds so i take to webirc instead, unfortunately you arent able to check idletimes with that client so i end up getting the stock irc client, which again, does not display idle. okay, so i eventually end up with nbc irc so that i can finally confirm nocits' relatively idle and ask him about my donation (that i have to do with the webirc client... because duh, otherwise it would be weird!! a guy joining #tdmpickup with 3 different clients????????) okay, so he confirms my donation for the intended amount, i tell him some shit, wishes him gl at quakecon and asks him to keep my donation anonymous.

What i dont understand with quake players in general..

Why arent you guys promoting yourself and creaing a brand?
There are so many free alternatives you can use to sell tshirts,merchendise et.c and i see them all go unused.

There's also no issue in not donating to them, if you see cypher or fazz streaming getting 200/300 viewers you could clearly see the problem quake has. A lack of interest, you need numbers to do merchandising and get parties interested in doing such alternatives, numbers quake doesn't have.

Never said donating to them was bad.
The issue is with them going straight to begging for money.

The sole reason why you need numbers for merchendising is the cost of producing the merchendise yourself, you need numbers so you can gauge how much you need aswell as to setup a budget.

That issue is moot now as there are free services which take a commission for every item you sell (zazzle,spreadshirt, etc).


Using the 200-300viewers excuse is so lazy considering you have smaller streams with less concurrent viewers then fazz has making a living off of their stream.
They do this by having several sources of income (donations,merch etc).

The issue why i even braught it up is because players have been sitting on their hands ever since quake was released.
A refusal to stream, refusal to market themselves, refusal to do anything.
While constantly giving excuses to why it wont work.

He is getting a nice mix of donations aswell as ad revenue from streaming.
And when i say make a living off of it i mean pay the bills and buy food.
He does this by being accomodating to his viewers and giving them a reason to comeback.
There are other streamers that are making a small living off of streaming aswell, if you stick your head out and look for yourself you will find them.

Anyway, fazz is doing a fairly good job by being accomodating to his viewers, he just needs to step it up on the other end.

Outside of streaming you have every other pro player just sitting on their arse waiting for things to fall into their lap.

1000 euros isn't necessarily enough for one ticket, they were obviously looking for support and not their tickets completely payed for, heck they have hotel rooms to pay for too, so anything above the initial goal the will definitely need/want to keep to help them with their total expenses.
