FAQ
What is this?

TwitchPlaysPokemon is a social experiment, it is a stream of the Gameboy version of Pokemon Red (151 romhack) running on an emulator. An IRC bot translates buttons said in chat into keypresses (simulated in software, no fancy typist robots).

Yeah I read that, but there's 30,000 people watching the stream.... pressing keys. Plus the Twitch lag, so what will come out of this? Guess it's just a 'we can do this, so why not'!

I'm sure they know it can't be done (complete the game).
OR they want to find out how far they can go.
Maybe they gather many figures, stats etc, what was the progress when X viewers/messages were sent. Things like that.
It's almost 4 days I don't know when they will pull the plug, I'm interested to see how far it can go. I also wondered if they modified that ROM because I'm so surprised that after 3 days and 12 hours the trolls (the ones who kept saying "Start" haha) didn't manage to quit the game :D.

I don't know much about Pokemon, I don't like the game and anything about it honestly, but a friend told me that yesterday morning they did a decent progress, if it's true then I wanna see their experiment results when it's over.

Pokemon is one of the most sold game ever, and has been played by millions of peoples.
In addition to that, there's that "social esperiment" that draws a lot o peoples, not necessarily to play.
The surreal situations happened on the stream generated memes and developed cults already.

Please try to understand the point of the question, not literally answering the question.
Pokemon Red, besides "Twitch plays Pokemon" has no value to be streamed whatsoever and would never have pulled this many viewers. People are not watching it because it's Pokemon, they're watching it because it's Pokemon they can spam control commands at.

Or in other words

"It's the way it's implemented that's fun for people. "

Intel Extreme Masters, Dreamhack, FaceIT cups. I don't think that Quake Live lacked or lacks high quality events to be honest. That old generation of arena shooters isn't attractive to younger players, and that's it basically.

Competitive pokemon is more mainstream than quake is.

Remember quake is in a bubble. No one at dreamhack knows quake is there (separate venue altogether, no advertising) and quakecon is entirely irrelevant these in days in the big picture. In reality right now quake is not in any major lan.

It's not on any major lan because even with advertisement it wouldn't have 100k+ viewers and therefore is not really interesting for sponsors.

80k+ right now, mother of god!
Anarchy and Democracy

TwitchPlaysPokemon now has two modes, anarchy and democracy.

Anarchy mode is the "old" mode, where everyone's inputs are applied immediately.

Democracy mode is vote-based and has a more sophisticated input system.

In order to switch from one mode to the other, the mode that isn't active needs 75% of votes as indicated by the dotted line, the current percentage of votes is indicated by the black line.

In democracy mode you can compile a sequence of inputs. left2 will move left twice, left2down2 will move left twice and down twice.

It's getting real.

Yes, actually wow.

How fucking dumb are people becoming?
This is a social experiment. If you want to play the game go fucking play it alone. Majority gets the vote, end of story.

Sounds like some butthurt redditard think this stream is actually meaningful?

Started his dumb shitty paragraph with "This was a big deal. If he had taken control while we were in a Pokemon Center instead Bird Jesus would be gone by now, he had that much time controlling the stream singlehandedly."

Releasing a pokemon is a big deal? FUCKING REALLY?

"my argument that he could be very dangerous if he tries again today with more viewers. He nearly wrecked us with his late night viewership, what's going to happen when he tries it Sunday afternoon?"

Are you fucking kidding me?
This is why I fucking hate reddit, redditors, le memers and gentlemen fedoras.

no its not really allowed.. but destiny has been pulling stunts like this since he first got "popular" and etc. he's a very intelligent businessman and knows how to use his online influence and persona to get things to happen that as a "byproduct" indirectly boost his popularity. how many people in this twitchplayspokemon community had heard of him before this? and after? my money is on less and then a lot more. he's switched games, he's pulled stunts, he's done just about everything he can to meet his end goal of pulling in more views and making more money.

I mean, both side are really pathetic, why does he send people doing this? Why does he troll (I didn't even know the guy, so if what I read is right...)? Why would they even mess with others for no reason, is there a valuable reason anyway? The other guys, why did they make reddit threads, and even discussions on social network websites to blow this thing out of proportion? Why did they try to ban this guy out of Twitch network forever?

The social experiment is ruined. If not it showed a sad part of human nature, whoever supports A or B in that sad story needs to open their eyes.

If not it showed a sad part of human nature
The only thing that's sad is people caring so much about it. It's Twitch plays pokemon, it's not Cancer patient donation or something.

The social experiment is ruined
How? The experiment was set there to see what happens if 80.000 people control a single game. Turns out people will join forces and work towards a goal. It's only ruined for people without common goals.

Why would they even mess with others for no reason
It was put there for this very reason. The point is not to finish the game. People not agreeing is what drives this thing, not some nerds playing the game.

whoever supports A or B in that sad story needs to open their eyes.
Exactly. I don't care if some pokemon gets dropped or if it's name is IAAAEEAE or IAEAORRAO, if there's a way to make someone angry simply by typing "down, down, select" in the browser then I think I'm going with it.

Actually, Fire, a twitch admin specifically said that if it had been any other channel that Destiny had sent his watchers to raid, it would have broken the rules. But, because the whole point of the TPP stream is the kind of experiment that it is, they allowed it to continue.

Yes, that's the whole point of the channel. I thought it was really amusing how these guys on reddit turned that into a "us" and "them" (sorry, listening to The Dark Side of the Moon right now.)... how are the reddit users any more legitimate participants than those coming from Destiny's channel? They don't even realize it and this is fun.

By the way, I got the admin's name wrong. I was thinking of Fire since that's the one everyone was flipping shit about. It was George:

"My general feeling for any other chat is that it would be considering raiding and not be allowed."

And, since I'm quoting people, I should probably source it before some TPP fan starts yelling at me. lol::

http://www.reddit.com/r/Twitch/comments/1ypsm...to/cfmq4f4

I don't know why I'm even reading this shit. I suppose it's like a driving past a car crash. You feel bad for staring at the unfortunate people and at the same time, you can't look away.

edit: One thing I will say is that I'm actually interested in playing pokemon, now. I was even looking at 3DS XL's on amazon and seeing what all other kinds of games are popular on them, as well. Could be fun during down time or waiting around at my heart surgeon's/cardiologist's offices. Maybe this whole thing is a huge PR stunt by Nintendo! haha
