I think every retirement announcement for the past 2-3 years has resulted in a return to the game within 3-6 months after the original announcement.

Why that?

It's a pretty bad way to retire right before a big tournament. He basically spits everyone in the face by doing it this way, the DH organizers will have to find a last second replacement and everyone was looking forward to watching him play etc.

As long as he plays more Quake than Shootmanina I will somehow live after this.

I'm playing Quake since '99 as a hobby, and I absolutely love and respect the game's skill-demanding core mechanics. Never was aiming at becoming a pro at Q3, but always topped 1st in duels and ffas among my friends and collegues, who were daring enough to learn to fucking quake)).

That satisfied my demands hobbywise. Was a LAN club head admin in the early 2000's (what a job when you're young and have plenty of time ahead - you're playing, sleeping and receiving money for all this:)), seen only about 2-3 guys in my city able to kick my ass in Q3A.

But there are personal goals in life, at which I wanted to become a pro. Because upon reaching certain level of knowledge and practical experience u know - the joy of your own life and satisfaction comes from very certain things u can describe and measure in a way. Half of those things r my personal progress in the field I've chosen and a few support activities, like physical training and extreme sports.
The other half of joy I receive from life is sex - girls, women, threesomes, seduction, relationships, the overwhelming sense of calm happiness and accomplishment when a sweet babe cuddles in your arms tired and fulfilled... all those things and more. If you see these things in spam and ads only - well...

So I didn't sign up.

Regardless of that I do believe that I could do fairly ok. And I'd probably enjoy playing there as well (especially if I could get in more lan games before the officials).
But to me it would be unfair to take a spot while there are plenty of people who are more motivated.

So if he really does, he shouldn't have applied to DH in the first place. The line up is monstrous even without him, but now there will this disgust of him not going after signing up (of course there would be some voices that DHW misses strenx either way, but this way it's gonna be way worse imo).

it's so sad seeing all this hate on him. kevin is awesome and he accomplished a shitload in quake, why is it such a bad thing for him to retire? a player like him is heavily invested in quake and esports, sponsorships, trips, networking, etc. with the amount of time, money, and effort put into quake i think he deserves to announce he's retiring. its not just a hobby, it's much more than that. you cant bash him for saying you dont retire from a hobby. hes retiring from playing it professionally, which is a lot more than just a hobby.

Last time QuakeLive was almost cancelled forever on Dreamhack because of players changing their decision at the last minute.
It's not about one fucking Dreamhack, it's about simply keeping your promises on which a big part of future of QuakeLive is based. It's not "less work" for admins, it's making more difficult the already almost impossible job of proving to Dreamhack bosses that QL is still a viable game. You want to retire? Then don't fucking sign up and then confirm your participation. Or first play what you have committed for, and then retire.

Yes, when a player makes a conscious decision to participate, the admins rely on that, and a lot of money is spent on organizing the whole venue based on trust for players to make all possible to do what they promised, and then some player just says out of nowhere "hey, I retire", that's definitely pussy. It IS a big deal, because it's a sign for DH that even players stop being interested in QL so much that they don't even feel to be at least polite enough to play their last tournament they promised. So the bosses see it and then guess how likely it makes for QL to be continued at Dreamhack?

The fact that he said " how stupid can you be to feel empathy for the admins" is what made me go WTF. Seriously this guy is the biggest retard of ESR. The fact that the admins are giving us free entertainment on there spare time, and then piss on them and say that they should do more is just disgusting.

Strenx could have done this much better. He could have said something like, "i took being left by my gf much harder then i expected at first. I don't feel motivated to play anymore right now and i skip this tournament because i will not perform and i can't motivate myself into practice. I leave my spot to someone else because they will perform better then me, and i apologize to the admins and my fans. Some day in the future i might return but who knows".

i think so too. He often spoke about Quake as an "art form", something on those lines.

I'm not saying he's right but it's obvious he values his experience through QL as a life journey in its fullest meaning and helped him discover things about himself he'd probably never know or would have find maybe too late.

I really don't see the upside in dodging this lan (but yet i don't know his schedule, just some deductions since he applied and confirmed his presence). It'll be the real test on how this game influenced him, understand what he gained from it or Quake took away form him. Expecially in this frame of mind.

Attending just makes sense under any circumstance i can think of... Additionally because he gave his word and in my view, he owes it to Quake.

i dont understand if he doesnt want to play what would be the point of him going to DH, losing all of his matches showing little to no interest in the whole event... all that would cause ppl hating more bitching about why he didnt gave up his spot to someone who actually deserves is etc... that would be just embarassing for him, the viewers, the casters and for the organisers.

Strenx you cant leave, you havent made your mark on the scene yet and won a quakecon/dreamhack.

Strenx is made of top tier stuff. It would be nice to see him go up against rapha when hes on form.

Peoples that complains about users not licking strenx's ass has no right to deny them the freedom to express their opinion.
Strenx has showed a bad attitude toward the pro scene countless times.

Ping whoring, whines about other player's pings, ragings, free insults toward respectful players he doesn't even know, ragequits, contradicing himself, lying, acting like a complete cunt and a diva in the interviews, excuses over every topic, and the list goes on.
If you feel to still ignore all those actions because you know him in person or he's been nice to you, or for whatever other reason, then fair enough, but don't fell surprised if the majority of those that has followed the scene in the later years doesn't feel like praising him out of nowhere.

That last "retirement" is just the cherry on the cake: subscribing to the most exciting LAN of the last years, playing the first map of the pre-tournament, getting beat by a 1900 elo player, ragequitting and announcing a retirement, additionally in a whiny way and relating that to a drop from the girlfriend... shameful isn't the word.

Peoples had already big expectations towards his partecipation, because he's the kind of player that doesn't need a lot of practicing to obtain results, and that always has a chance to pull upsets and entertaining matches.
Some of those peoples even donated money also due to his partecipation to the tournament. We already risked to definitely lose our little place at the Dreamhack due to past event's drop outs from players.
And the break with the gf shouldn't have even been mentioned. He's already 22, and he should be somehow professional, if he wants to brag about being a professional esport (lol) player. Just a week ago, Marc Marquez set the new record of youthness of a world motorbike champion at 20 years old. Would he have lost due to emotionals drawbacks from gfs, peoples wouldn't have been kind. Neither would have toward the 20 years old Mike Tyson becoming the youngest heavyweight champion of the world.
Those things happens, but you aren't entitled to address your professional faults on them. It doesn't work like that for common peoples, that has to go to work everyday not to win titles, but just to survive till the end of the month.
That sounds more like another excuse.
Last but not least, this announcement doesn't even sounds serious, and doesn't inspire peoples to thrust it and be serious; we all know that quakers has a solid tradition of fake retirements and unannounced comebacks, and given Strenx's reliability, he'll probably be back soon, or sooner.
And the term "hate" is definitely exaggerated in those situations, there is nothing really serious to be hating about.

TL;DR:
Peoples here have all the rights to express their opinions, expecially given Strenx's thrash attitude toward the pro scene in the years of his career.
